Fanboyism good for the video game industry

Xbox 360 or PS3? PC or Mac? Pepsi or Coke? Feuds like these are usually fueled by one main factor: fanboyism. It's the start of many arguments but it's also one of the more important driving forces that various organizations across the globe depend on to fuel a lot of their sales; whether that be of cans of soda pop, a personal computer or video games.

I buy just about every AAA PS3 exclusive. (Killzone2, Uncharted2, God of War3, Modnation Racers, Little Big Planet) Already Pre ordered LBP2, GT5 and KZ3.

And I bought every single one of those with the exception of MNR and have already pre-ordered LBP2 GT5 and KZ3 as well.

I also have Fable 3, Halo Reach, Gears of War 3 all on pre-order as well.

less fanboys and more consoles usually means more games purchased, which means better for gaming.

I don't think that is the definition of fanboy, I just think its the definition of a mean fanboy. I think a fanboy is someone who refuses to acknowledge anything good that comes from another console because it is not on the console they own. Whether they belittle someone over it or not, they are still a fanboy.

Fish has a point. Between the two, those who have a single platform to support vs those who have multiple. I'd say it is the latter that buys lots of games/hardware.

Gaming is one hell of an expensive hobby.

OT: there is a difference between being a fan of gaming and being a fanboy. Usually the fan of gaming can respect others and talk rationally about upcoming titles for the various systems and share their interest in what is going on in the industry.

The fanboy is the one that will belittle others because of their choices and defend their platform of choice to the bitter end. There is something to be said for loyalty but when it comes to the ridiculing of others to remain loyal...that's what ruins the fun for everyone else.

Honestly, I think hardcore fanboyism over the Internet (like here on n4g) can cause some bad blood between some dev teams. Saying things like turn10 eats polyphany digitals dust over the forums can cause some type of negative competition between them.

Thats not really helping the industry is it?
You basically buy games that are close to Sonys internal developments.
What about third parties?

Not saying those games are bad, but its just a poor selective way of buying games. There is more out there you know.

If you don't like people who defend their consoles, in a uneducated way then simply don't pay attention but without fanboyism in industry of video games would be so boring, no excitement.

Fanboyism causes people to miss out on great games. You are dumb to think it makes anything more exciting. How can I be excited to tell you how much fun Killzone 2 is when you won't play it cause you are a 360 fanboy, who won't try something new? Who would want to game with you when you call them stupid for liking something you have never played? You are a fanboy and the equivalent of that jealous fat kid who says means things about other people cause they won't play with him. And it's not that people don't give you a chance. It's every time you post anything it's pointless and irrelevant. If you pulled you head out of your 360, you'd see there is another world of great games that are totally different beyond anything you've played before. That is why both systems are do well, they both offer different experiences. Grow up or get lost.

Cause Wii fan's simply don't troll. The only time you'll see a Wii fan is when the Wii is being attacked, we never go on the offensive. It's funny, because the supposedly "console that's just for kids" has the most mature fanboys. PS3 fanboys can act like children, though they're still very smart and humorous 360 fanboys.....they're just dumb.

And another thing, Kinect and Move basically praises motion controls, so Wii fanboys know they have an awesome console to have the competition copying it lol.

Just look at sports: Yankees/Red Sox, Giants/Dodgers, Raiders/Charges...etc. Sellouts because of rivalry and the teams just laugh their way all the way to the bank!

Not knowing the diff in faulty/actual benifical gaming hurts the industry.
Thats when we acept incomplete games to pay to play online to overpriced products.
Illogical debates while the overall concept to y its taboo allow the companies to do it in the first place.
No progression brings gaming to a decline because of the confusion.
The fboy term has never more stronger and yet more disgusting till now.
And people wonder y they say gaming is not a art, or y gameplayers are the worest type of fboys or like patcher said to charge extra fo online mp.
We might bicker here but certain people, investors and so forth come see the stupity in what we argue for and laugh.
Haven't gamers ever wonder y most game to movie adaptions ever worked?
Because they don't care about the art of it, just the profit from the name of it.

Just depends where you go if you want a good community discussion. Imo the official PS3 forums (UK) and GTPlanet are great places to discuss things and very open about it.

That's because they are for PS3 users. The same would be the case if you went to a 360 forum. However in neutral forums (like this one is supposed to be) you can't ever really say what you think for risk of loosing bubbles or getting cursed out by a child. I see the same thing on Gametrailers, Game FAQ's, Gamespot, etc. It's everywhere.

Bottom line is that fanboys can't comprehend that anything they don't support can be any good. It is possible to own only 1 system and not be a fanboy. I'm talking about those hardcore fanboys.

BeaArthur, you are exactly right. It isn't just here on N4G, like some people claim, it is everywhere.

The fact that we can't have reasonable discussions without being attacked or fearing the loss of our bubbles is a sad commentary on the state of things in gaming. Sure, fanboyism might have a few positives, but overall it is a net negative.

Being a fan or having a preference is one thing, but actual fanboyism crosses the line into being something harmful.

I've been on the PS3 forums (being a PS3 owner) and lots of people have a 360 too or praise the games. My 360 owning friends are pretty unbaised as well, and even though he owns a 360 Uncharted 2 is my friend chris's favourite game

I honestly don't care.

I knew what was going to happen back in 2006 when the PS3 first came out. I knew what the future held which is why I made my decision.

At one point I did have vague interest in buying a 360 for games like Lost Odyssee and Tales of Vesperia but that interest has completely diminished. There is nothing currently being released for the 360 aside from Ninety Nine Nights 2, Fable 3, and maybe Gears 3 that interests me. 3 games is not enough to warrant a purchase.

I think M$oft fans are worse than Sony fans too, my personal opinion from experience on many gaming forums and image boards.

There`s nothing wrong with playing and enjoying every platform, and there is nothing wrong with being loyal to one platform either. Fanboys enjoy defending a brand they like, what`s wrong with that? Fanboys debate about consoles just as sports fanatics debate about teams. Newsflash: most fanboys are joking around, it`s a piece of plastic, and it`s the internet. You know what`s annoying? The overly sensitive people who get all butthurt and bent out of shape because you have a simple preference and enjoy expressing just how pleased you are with it. What a bundle of joy they are huh? They remind me of the dull, boring, uninteresting people in real life that are like talking to a wall. Stuck up, and holier than thou. Fanboyism is just good fun, don`t let it get you all angry over it. Sheesh.

And yes, I would agree that fanboyism is good for the industry. What`s better than having a loyal fanbase?

Looking at the eyes in the picture, it's pretty clear that the MS and Nintendo fanboys actually required some sort of illuminated brain/eye implants for their fanboy initiation, whereas the Sony fanboy is possibly just wearing a contact lens.

Yes and no, yes because without them we would'nt get some of laughs you get from N4G and they do buy alot of the software and hardware, but they can sometimes go a little to far with spoiling plots and sometimes be generally ignorant which can make gaming just look bad or by confusing opinion with fact.

Xbox360=Better Software

PS3= Better Hardware

Wii=Casual fun

I personally like hardware so i love my ps3. but xbox is great for media and stuff like that the wii is just casual fun gaming it all depends what you like more
