Rumour Crushing: Unreal III Not Cross Platform

At 4:13 on the afternoon of August 3rd, Epic's Mark Rein, posting to his own forum, stated the following:

"I checked with Steve Polge and he said that YES we are supporting keyboard and mouse in Unreal Tournament 3 on PS3. He is confident we are doing it in a way that will be balanced without feeling "gimped" for either side. We'll also allow people to choose whether or not they want to allow mixed controller vs. keyboard/mouse games or not."

Some 'sources' have now managed to morph this into the 'fact' that Unreal Tournament III will be cross-platform PS3 and PC.

Strange, because at 4.29pm on the same day, Rein actually pointed out that:

"Cross platform play isn't decided yet. Please keep this thread about keyboard and mouse for PS3. There are other threads on cross platform."

I was wondering where the confirmation in that other article was coming from...all that was "re-confirmed" was the M/K support on the PS3...

Epic has stood by the "we could do it" statue on this subject for a very long time...only thing they confirmed is the game is not set to support Games for Windows Live, which gives Epic the freedom to handle the servers in anyway they feel fit...

it will remain a possibility even if the game ships without the support...if people whine enough, they will probably try something with it...

No...I was saying if the PC version will only use Windows Live, then that would not allow PS3 cross platform support, at least as far as Rein made it sound...

and yes, it was confirmed at E3 in an interview with the same guy (Mark Rein) that the game was not using Windows Live because they didn't want the same loss of control as they had with XBL...he didn't say that exactly, but he said something along lines of "we have had great success in the past without having a PC based unified service...in that environment we would lose control of our modding community, which is something we do not see as desirable"...that is paraphrased, search UT3 on this site and you can find all the interviews from E3 and some GD shortly after...its in one of them...

UT3, like any other game in development can change so features like cross platform, single player, multiplayer, control support even the name of the game can change. Don't get you hopes high while a games is still in development

Anyway, I really hope they do make this cross platform. Im sure they are figuring out how to do it now. Theres no reason why its not possible.

Remember FFXI, they made that work accross 3 platforms, Windows,PS2,360. I know its UT3 is a different playing experiance but I bet they could do it. If not at release, it will probebly follow in an update.

Anyway, the only games I'd want from that sh!tty ps3 list is heavenly sword and MGS4, those are the only games worth getting on ps3 this holiday season except for MGS4 which should be arriving in 2238.

The Live service looks really good but the fact that you have to pay to access the goodies is plain wrong. Once you're in Live you still have to purchase certain contents. Why must you pay twice? I'm sure that movie and TV studios pay Microsoft a really good fee to distribute their contents.
