PS3 Firmware (3.41) is Available For Download

Sony really need to improve on FW updates, we go months with nothing then get a little update.
Then get 2 updates in a month that also...ad almost nothing of use to me.

They need to learn how to patch the system or something, it takes me about 10 min usually, which isn't that long, but it is annoying with all of the installing etc, and it only goes to like 50% then finishes..

I have a very fast internet connection and it still takes longer than it should to download and install. Its just PSN speeds, they aint the greatest. Unless you download stuff from the store, then it goes pretty quick.

I always hated PS3 updates in the early days. It was like a new update every week. Sometimes it added features (mostly things i didnt want) but half the time it was "security" updates that took forever. I absolutely hate it when you boot up the PS3 in the morning hoping to get a quick game in before work or school, but instead you gotta update. Yep i see the comments already "just pay 50 bucks for PS Plus so you can set a time for the ps3 to update" yeah uhhh no.

Im just happy that ever since the major update to revampe the XMB and what not, it hasnt been as common. That update was awesome, it was interesting, and added alot of things I like. If we got stuff like that more often id be happy.

Unless you need to be online, just play your game offline, then instead of shutting the system down, go to the Update Firmware from XMB. Before it starts downloading it will ask if you want to automatically shut down when the download is complete. Turn your TV off and leave it, the PS3 will download and install the update, then shut off on its own.

The reason Sony is having problems with cross game chat is because there system is open. Its easy for MS since they own all the servers or most of them and if they fo allow a dedicated server then it has to allow ms support for cgc. That's the way it is guys.

So, your chatting with a buddy. It can be you and the buddy in a P2P connection, or it can be you, your buddy, and an interloper server which does nothing except cost 50$ a year. Either way your limited by your own connection speeds.

I'm pretty sure both consoles are more than capable of being their own voice chat server, especially considering I use to voice chat on my 500mhz computer back in the day, and it didn't have any trouble doing the calculations.

yes when you update it scans to see what your firmware is then then gives you all the updates you nedd to get to the most recent update, just be prepared for it to take a while if your new one has a really old fw

edit put your 60gb on ebay i just sold my brothers dead one for £48

Loyal Sony follower here, but I've just about given up on the ps3, now that the hardware looks sorted, just went and purchased a 360S. 4 years after launch, we still don't have a feature set to keep up, never mind better xbox live. Worst, I think its too late for some of the stuff ot get added as it would just break all older games (with no chance of them being patched)...

Including, but not limited too...

- Cross game voice chat
- Cross game OS level party support (so the developer doesn't have to do all the work)
- Syncing trophies
- Player feedback and ratings
- Cross game invite system thats not per title and hacked into the message system

Took Sony almost a year to even allow you to read a message when in game (lets not forget that we had to quit to the XMB when we first got the ps3).

The store is still a complete mess next to the 360, finding anything is hit and miss at best. 360, game in, goto the info about it, show all downloads - job done. PS3, launch the store (which is no where near integrated into the OS as xbox) search, doesn't work, sort, rummage about, give up.

I hate MS as a company, but they are flying and completely justified in being in the driving seat for next gen. Sony can consider themselves fortunate, if it wasn't for the hardware issues on 360, I don't think they would even have a gaming division in their company anymore.

iv never really been interested in getting an anoying voice message from some random, or chatting to one of my mates while playing a game...seems like its not necessary.

ps store has been awful for ages tho, far too slow and too difficult to find what you want.

when i play online tho, all i want to do is pop a game in, have a wee 1 or 2 hour game, then done.

dont see why having a slightly better online service means microsoft would be "in the driving seat" next gen. next gen is years away...psn could catch up cos its not that much to catch up on, and with a free service it could be argued that sony would be in the driving seat.

definately too much emphasis on the online rather than the singleplay and splitscreen for my liking.

If so have a look at my post history, I've generally been critical to all consoles where deserved, and having been given a second hand 360 (which was on the verge of death) and now purchasing my own, I can say without question I've been missing out.

To that end, just want to put that view forward, Sony really are behind the curve - outside of audio (which 7.1 LPCM is far far better than the best I can get out of 360 which is either 5.1 DD or 2.0 LPCM over hdmi) and the fact they have some very nice exclusives (currently playing heavy rain and loving it) - PS3 is vastly inferior to 360.

I used to outright refuse to get a 360 based on the hardware issue, but that looks sorted now. Whats Sonys excuse for the pathetic lack of features that even their premium service can't deliver?

The firmware updates are mainly implemented to keep the PS3 from being hacked not to add new features every time. New features are just a bonus.

I'll take a multi player game without hackers any day over a new bullshit feature i don't even use. I'm also an xbox live user and i dont even bother trying to play MW2 anymore, its actually worse than Counter Strike on the PC with the hackers. I have 2 people on my friends list who use a JTAG 360 and wallhack MW2. Dont believe me i"ll put up his gamertag and he also Broadcasts on Justin.TV.

Sony keep bringing the firmware with or without features. It keeps the PS3 hacker free and as an adult consumer i really appreciate you guys for protecting the integrity of online play unlike the 360 and Live.

Every other game i play thers players get 40, 50 60, kills and only a few deaths on the 360 and its not because ther so leet lol either, that my friend is called wall hacking. I have learned from being a PC gamer and playing counter strike for years in what to look for. Plus not to mention again i have people on my friends list who use JTAG 360's to use wall hacks and to hold pay for modded lobbies. The 360 is shit when it comes to competitive shooters online, even Halo 3 is hacked. I haven't to notice any hacked or modded game play on the PS3, yea there will always glitches and players who exploit but hacking not yet and thats due to the firmware updates.

The main benefit of the automatic updates, imo, is it keeps all your games on the current version without having to update when you play them.

I'm used to 360 where I put my disc in and if there is a patch its no more then 2 seconds guys. Has anyone else had any issues with external hard drive detection after firmware update 3.40?

Mine worked fine until I removed it and added some content from the PC, but when I hooked it back to the PS3 it no longer detected it. The format is correct (I've used it for months with the PS3) and the PC still reads it fine. Flash drives work, just not the external HD.

I just updated the firmware a few days ago, but do not want to jump the gun and blame this event, but it seems as if there has been some issues with 3.40 and the correlation seems apparent.

Anyone know any fixes? Are possible problems part of the impetus to introduce 3.41 so quickly perhaps?

After unplugging the power cord and coming back a while later my external HD is now being detected. While I cannot explain what happened to correct the problem I am nevertheless overjoyed.
