How I Used To Play RPGs

"Recently I have been thinking about what type of characters I make in videogames whenever the character creation option is available. It all started on some video game forum where I posted the topic “do you ever play as the opposite sex?”" - JPS

I love RPGS but the good ones seem few and far between.

MightyMark4275025d ago

Yea, RPGs recently have been declining...

Chris3995025d ago

Western: Oblivion, Dragon Age 1/2, Two Worlds 2 (ignore the first one :P), Mass Effect, Sacred 2, Diablo 3, Dungeon Siege 3, Hunted.

Eastern: Trinty: SOZO, Trinity Universe, Demon's Souls, Vesperia, Neptune, FFXIII, Star Ocean, WKC 1/2, FF VS, Resonance of Fate.

MMOs: DC Online, Tera, Guild Wars 2, WOW: Cata, FF XIV.

I hate making "lists", but there's more RPGs on every platform under the sun (notice I didn't even touch the handhelds, which are PACKED with RPGs) than you could possibly play in a lifetime.

Seriously, between work/ life/ wife/ exercise/ gaming, it's very hard to find a balance. I'm only just now getting around to FF XIII. And the release schedule this fall is unrelenting.

That aside, what this article is talking about is the "state" of the RPG at present. I think it's just like the state of all the other genres. We've seen it before. It doesn't have the 'magic' it once had. But then again, that could just be us, as older gamers, looking back on things with nostalgia tinted glasses.

Personally, I'm excited about all the games of my preferred genre (RPGs) coming out over the next few years. Sure there will be some niche and not so hot titles, but at least there's choice. And there will certainly be some gems along the way, so long as we're not too jaded to enjoy them.

raztad5025d ago

Also RPG is more than a prosperous genre on portables. From remastered classics, to truly new gems. There is a lot to look forward.

Darkfiber5025d ago

There are tons of good RPGs coming up soon, and a bunch out lately as well. I think the only reason people think there aren't that many is because they are getting shorter. In the good old days, you could play a single RPG for months on end. Now you're lucky if an RPG lasts you a few days to a week. That results in a lot of downtime in the middle, and the fact that everyone is always looking for the next best thing doesn't help companies much in designing big long games as they know that everyone will be playing the next big release the week after their game comes out.

Darkstorn5025d ago

The author talks about morality in addition to gender selection. I think if games did not make decisions so black and white (KOTOR, inFamous, Fable) and instead went the route of individualism (greed) vs. altruism (selflessness) and included the corresponding risks and rewards, we would end up having a much deeper experience than your 'aura' becoming blue or red.

JoySticksFTW5024d ago (Edited 5024d ago )

Sure there are numerous RPG's that you can list now, but Quantity does not equal Quality

And we haven't seen anything near the quality of a FFVI or FFX, Chrono Trigger, Suikoden, or Xenogears. Very few games this gen can compete with these gems either character or story-wise

And it seems that the top RPG's this gen are hybrids with heavy Shooter, Action, Adventure, and/or Strategy elements

Games like...

Mass Effect
Oblivion / Fallout
Demon's Souls
Valkyria Chronicles

But for traditional JRPG fans, pick up Lost Oddessy. It's a good game that you should be able to find dirt cheap now.

i always end up playing as a female character. partly because i'm a guy, i already know what thats like. the other part is purely aesthetic, i'd rather stare at a well-rendered female ass for 20 hours.

biowares games have spoiled me for all other rpgs. i love "choice" in games, i like being able to inject my own mentality into the game. no offense to jrpgs but if i had to play another one i'd puke. i've had my fill of trite characters emo-ing at each other during a tightly linear, generic narrative. it's not like the plots are so good that playing as a defined character is a treat. it's narrow, limiting and stifling.

Darkfiber5025d ago (Edited 5025d ago )

People like you creep me out, talking about wanting to know what it feels like to be a woman. Closet tranny much? Gross, dude.

Also, that "i'd rather stare at a well-rendered female ass for 20 hours" excuse is really getting old. Are you really that hard up for a girl that you need to look at some fake polygonal computer generated chick? That's sad. At least with porn, you can actually look at real people...naked ones, in fact, not some pixelated female figure under 100 pounds of armor. What's the point.

GrilledCheeseBook5025d ago

I usually play as a guy since I'm a guy but in Mass Effect I play as a women only because I just don't like the voice acting for the male character.

NYC_Gamer5025d ago (Edited 5025d ago )

i love wrpgs but always play as the male character since i am one in real life...

DA_SHREDDER5025d ago

Only two rpg's I played this gen that were worth playing are Oblivion and Demon's souls. Everything else out so far has been nothing but disappointment after disappointment.

Kos-Mos5025d ago

Too bad western developers can`t make human-like characters with human-like emotions and charisma.
If anyone tries to bring mass effect forward I pity them.

Why Monopolies In Gaming Must Not Be Allowed

As of right now, there are no monopolies in the games industry, and for the sake of the medium as a whole, they never should either.

thorstein2h ago

Shouldn't be allowed in any field.

Mugen Souls Retro Review – Sexy Demon Space Adventure

Gary Green said: We have a juxtaposition of 2D and 3D visuals, flashy turn-based combat, quirky anime characters with cheeky dialogue with plenty of partial nudity; Yes, this is a Compile Heart JRPG. Whilst the engine is borrowed from Hyperdimension Neptunia mk2, Mugen Souls is more of a Disgaea spin-off. It’s not a strategy RPG as such, it merely sits within Disgaea’s ever-expanding universe (Multiverse? Netherverse? Your guess is as good as mine). You won’t find cameos though, since Mugen Souls is a franchise which aims to stand on its own two feet.

Looking Back At 2008, An Unbelievably Incredible Year Of Video Game Releases

Huzaifa from eXputer: "2008 was home to the likes of Call of Duty: World at War, Dead Space, GTA 4, Far Cry 2, Left 4 Dead, and many other hits, which is outright remarkable."

ChasterMies4h ago

Some of these low paid video game “news” writers weren’t born before 2007.

CrimsonWing6915h ago

I don’t think anything can compare to 2023

lucasnooker15h ago

1998 - the best year in gaming! Metal gear solid, crash bandicoot 3, medievil, half life, ocarina of time, thief, tenchu, resident evil 2, Spyro, tomb raider 3, oddworld abes exodus, banjo kazooie.

It was a different breed of a gaming era. You’ll never understand what it was like back then. The aura of gaming, it was different!

KyRo15h ago(Edited 15h ago)

I second this. Gaming was a lot more varied and fun than it is today. I'm 35 so getting on compared to some here but I got to see all the changes from NES up to now but I've never felt so disappointed in any generation than I have this current gen. I was expecting more from this generation rather than prettier versions of games that came before it. Game mechanics have become so refined that alot of games feel the same and has done for a while now.

Maybe it's time to have a break for a while. I love gaming but I don't feel I get much fun in the traditional sense out of it anymore.

CrimsonWing6914h ago(Edited 14h ago)

Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2, Abe’s Exodus, and Ocarina of Time are the only things from that list that I liked.

Here’s the 2023 game releases that I personally liked… and big releases that I didn’t care for:

- Dead Space Remake
- Wo Long Dynatsy
- Resident Evil 4 Remake
- Diablo 4
- Fire Emblem Engage
- Hogwarts Legcay
- Street Fighter 6
- Hi-Fi Rush
- Like a Dragon: Ishin
- Octopath Traveler 2
- Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters
- Final Fanatsy XVI (actually ended up not liking this, but it was still a big deal release)
- Baldur’s Gate 3
- Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon
- Lies of P
- Mortal Kombat 1
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
- Starfield (Ended up hating this one, but big release)
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder
- Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (I’m an old-school Zelda fan, but didn’t really enjoy this game)
- Alan Wake 2

I mean, honestly I’ve never seen a year of major IP releases like that, ever.

Profchaos11h ago(Edited 11h ago)

Isn't it just a generational thing realistically.

I've been gaming since way back and I some of my favourite games go as far back as the late 80s for me each generation has a year or two of game changing releases one after another before an inevitable dry spell.

I kind of agree gaming had a different feel games hit different because we didn't have the internet nothing got spoiled and you really had to put in the effort to beat a puzzle which could set entire groups of people looking for a solution. But most importantly games were experimental and not as cookie cutter as today even basics like controls were not universal today r2 is shoot l2 is ads garunteed you can't deviate from that in a shooter back then it could of been square, R1 or R1 and circle nothing was standard.

But as time moves on a new generation picks up their controller they are going to be interested in different things that PS1 demo disc with the t Rex blew our primitive 16 bit brains back on launch but to kids today it's laughable.
The new gen of kids coming into to hobby seem to value different things to us there seems to be a huge focus on online play, streamers, gaming personalities, and social experiences, convience of digital downloads. To me I value none of that but that's ok like my parents not liking the band's I would listen to its just the natural cycle.

Gameseeker_Frampt2h ago

Just about every year in the 7th generation was great and something we most likely won't experience again.

2009 for example had Assassin's Creed 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Dragon Age: Origins, Uncharted 2, Halo 3: ODST, Killzone 2, Borderlands, Bayonetta, and Demon's Souls to name a few.
