SDCC 2010 Panel: 38 Studios Reveals Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning

GrE writes, "Curt Schilling opened up the talk talking about his love of gaming, especially MMORPGs such as EverQuest, and wanting to make a game of his own. And in creating this game, he wanted to get a Murderer’s Row of talent – he got RA Salvatore to do the story, Ken Rolston who was the lead designer on Oblivion to be in charge of game design, and Todd MacFarlane was brought in to do the characters – not just design and concept art but all character art and design..."

MMORPGs seem to draaaaaag on. Not very excited about this

bgrundman3191d ago

Come on now... MMORPGS are what is keeping Blizzard alive. There has to be some good in them.

Neco5123191d ago

True, they're pretty much the only ones that do it right

roblef3191d ago

There is nothing wrong with MMOs. PC gamers need love too!

fortehhordes3191d ago (Edited 3191d ago )

I believe Reckoning is not a MMO. The press release listed it as a single player RPG. The other project they have in the works due later is an MMO based on the same world.

This is also all based off a USA Today interview. Not sure if that should be credited.

I, for one, am interested in seeing if a former baseball player can design a good game. If these screenshots are any indication, then maybe...

Neco5123191d ago

Seriously, me too I'm kinda worried about this

bgrundman3191d ago

I didn't say I was worried. I am actually kinda hopeful. It is an underdog story at its best.

Baseball players making videogames?? Well, he did play for the Sox. So it should be alright

darx3191d ago

He brought us Sox fans 2 WS titles and now I can give back to Schill by purchasing this game.

Davedough3191d ago

There's a lot of power on the dev team. I hope they can pull it off. I'll have my eyes on this one.

here are some of the people at the studio.

Author R.A. Salvatore (Forgotten Realms books, notably the Drizzt series and Icewind Dale series)who is creating the world and story, and artist Todd McFarlane ("Spider-Man" comics, creator of Spawn) who is handling visuals and style, are the other founders of the studio, along with Schilling.

Digging through some old articles it looks like he has some decent people working on the project and running sections of the studio.

*company CEO is Brett Close, formerly of Midway and EA
*UI designer is Irena Pereira (WoW, WoW:BC, WoW:WotLK)
*music by Aubrey Hodges (King's + Space Quest, Doom, Quake)
*art design by Thom Ang (Medal of Honor, also from X Files)
*system designs by Travis McGeathly (former lead designer of Everquest)

Man, this make me wish I had gone to SDCC. It sounds like so much good stuff is trickling out from there.
