Resident Evil 5 Criticized for Racism

Capcom's Resident Evil 5 hasn't even got a release date, but it' s already drawn the ire of a blog devoted to African women.

I read some of the people's comments on there and i agree: where was the resistance all these years when resident evil was about gunning down white infected civilians? the series has been through spaniards, white people, and now to balance it out capcom decided to set it in africa so what?

You see it as glorifying the american. i think to most people its glorifying the Hero of the game. he has big muscles, nearly all heros have big muscles, in fact black heros tend to have bigger muscles then their white counter parts.

i can tell you now, if i was playing that in africa and my friends saw it, it would be a simple case of he is the hero, he is the focus of the game. there tend to be two people glorified in this sort of game, the hero and the villain.

Zombies, and killing lots of them.

THe main quality is that these guys and gals are zombies, and as with all zombies, they need to die. The accidental quality (for story purposes) is that they are dark skinned.

I'm black also and didn't find this trailer offensive. but amn that lil boyz eyes in the trailer was mad scary, but back on topic while this is not offensive we do need more black lead characters in games. I mean GTA san andreas was a good start. But im tired of just playing with black people in games like saints row and NBA streets, and DEf jam icon where the theme is hip hop not all black people relate to the hip hop culture and that is not all that we are. I mean why couldn't the hero in haze be black, or the guy in mass effect? I mean the guy in mass effects looks black u might as well make him black. I thought in Mass Effect you can custom your character? Also their have been black characters how about Torque from the Suffering. And the guy from Crackdown. And Barret from Final Fantasy 7 played a important role.
And their are many games like Morrowind where you can create a black characters.

Actually, it really gets deep as far as these problems and the real ringleaders. I watched the movie "Crash" and some less fortunate friends of mine in the intellect department didnt get it, so they said it sucked. But watch every bit of it closely and real truth reveals itself. This movie really did deserve its oscar. But I have friends of many races and we all have an above average intellect, which from these comments, alot of you guys do too, and can see past the b.s. that is being consumed by the average person. Now seeing as entertainment and the media sculpts minds young and old alike, you do have higher authority in Hollywood that will only offer these dumb roles to hungry black actors and actresses hoping to get a foot in the door to Hollywood, and these guys actually may have talent but are forced to play these stereotypical roles, well I shouldnt say forced, but when that is all that is available for you, well that and going back to burger king, the actor sacrifice his morals over and over again for the almighty dollar, even if it means humiliating himself. There will not be too many major stars like Denzel Washington at the same time, those high caliber actors are rationed to the public. I haven't really thought yet about how I feel about this game. 4 was the first I'd ever played n' is one of my favorite games on the PS2. RE5, I'm sure, will be nothing short of spectacular.

the RE series has been the same for a long time. in 4, they went to a sort of Spanish/European country because it was something new, and different for the series.

i think here, in 5, the developers were deciding where they wanted to take the series next. i mean, have you seen any *OTHER games set in a primarily African (presuming it *IS Africa) setting? i don't think so.

i'm sure they ran down a whole list of new locales to potray, and from a gaming perspective, most of them are taken. how many games are set in a Jungle this generation? 6 billion? the Jungle is the new Hoth/WWII this generation. so the jungles out.

most of the REs have been set in American towns, so America isn't a new, fresh setting. Japan has like, elventy billion games set there, and the Japanese audience may not be interested in *ANOTHER game set in their home town. even here in the states, we were getting tired of how repetitive RE was getting.

so they decide to go out of the norm, and take us to a place that most of us have never been before.

video games are fantasy. they whisk us off to worlds that are sometimes like our own, sometimes not, and put us in an interesting situation. most games have a violent edge, so it begs to reason that no matter *WHERE RE was set, you'd be killing *SOMETHING.

we fear what we don't know. Chris has been dropped into a situation he does not understand. us, as gamers, are not only told this through Chris' eyes, but it mimics our own feelings as well. Silent Hill wouldn't be nearly as scary if we knew everything about the town, or where the creatures were coming from.

not many of us have been to the country Capcom is depicting here. that will scare us. not knowing what's going on, or what to expect from the people there will scare us. the fact that they are black is inconsequential from a gaming perspective. a bunch of white people would feel, subliminally, out of place if the game was set in Africa. hell, if they did become Politically "Correct", and make all the blacks in the game white to appease those that are offended, i'm sure my people would find offense that there weren't any *BLACK zombies in the game, what with it being in Africa.

as for Chris, a white male, being the lead? hey, Chris has only been in *ONE Resident Evil, and it was the first one. Hell, Nancy-boy *LEON was in two games before Chris was. Jill, Claire, and Leon all got to be in more than one Resident Evil game. i think Chris deserves a second game too.

I saw the game Gun, I really enjoyed that game as well, it was really fun! sure i killed fellow native americans, but if it was just a normal western white cowboy getting along with native americans at that period of time, it wouldnt really be historically accurate now would it? To some people it's just a game but Resident Evil 5 does depict black people pretty seriously. They do a good job of making them look creepy and they look sorta monkeyish in this game. I don't think Capcom is racists of course but they might of made a mistake by choosing this horror setting and trying to bring hell to life in the form of Africa and black people as monsters.

I'm white, and when I seen the trailer to this game it never even occured to me that the hero was a white guy killing blacks. Guess I must be color blind or something, since at no point did I even make that connection. All I saw was a guy killing zombies in what appeared to be an impoverished area of some unspecified African country.

I was raised in a mixed race society and learned as a toddler that race is only skin deep, beyond that we're all the same.

Why do people need to start polarizing the way we look at games. To me it's just the same game in a different setting, and this game desperately needed a change.

I regularly speak to an afro-caribbean guy on my Xbox Live friends list, and he's even less impressed with this situation than I.

Before africans even came to america, my ancestors(being native americans) greeted the white people, some were nice, and some tried to kill us... Im a cherokee but what i mean by my ancestors meaning all native americans, my ancestors went on the trail of tears... we were destroyed of our entire, ENTIRE! culture, we were forced to have our hair cut, our religion was just considered foolish infront of them, and we were forced to go to school and get educated, if we practiced any part of our own culture we would be killed, whipped, crippled, the works. Depicting a race in a game is not wrong. If his motives were to wipe out a race only for hate then that is wrong. I myself am black, so I understand why they would be saying that. I personally won't be playing RE5 because I'm just not comfortable shooting another black person in the face as a white guy. It sounds racist because I played RE4 and I had no problem with it. But there's a lot of history behind white/black relations and that's what makes this particular RE game so controversial. The other games were ok because white people and Spaniards are basically the same in that they did the oppressing.

If they made a game where you were a German shooting Jew zombies, i guarantee you that something will come up. It's not just the game, it's the history that the game brings up. If white people had not enslaved black people, no one would care about this right now. But unfortunately they did.

About World War 2 games and its inaccuracies, namely Wolfenstein, Return to castle Wolfenstein, Resistance Fall of Man and its possible sequels, Call of Duty and its countless sequels, the same with Medal of Honor. No mention about holocausts whatsoever, or jewish discrimination. Why not? Somehow I don't see jews raising the "anti-semitism" card the way the "racism" card was raised against this game.

In fact, I didn't see jews, or namely the state of israel, complain against the latest palestinian or iranian videogames, the first of which depicted a palestinian boy that killed allowed him to kill israelis (and only israelis) in the game, and the later of which allowed iranians to save iranian nuclear bomb scientists (I wonder what for? Oh wait).

In fact, I do know there have been games made by jews (in israel), and even when they have the resources, and that they could have made games SLAUGHTERING arabs in war, they simply made a game that seeked peace with their palestinian neighbors.

Furthermore, there is no reason why you could make a game about germans killing jews in a contemporary setting the way you can make a game about an american go to africa and kill african zombies. 1. Germans don't have a usable army, unlike USA. 2. Even if they did, it would have to be in Israel, as it is the country where you would find the most density of jews. Even then, not everyone could be jews, as 20% of its inhabitants are arabs, and even more if you include the entire palestinian and israeli region. Furthermore, if a virus actually just infected jews, that would be racist. The virus in this game doesn't just affect blacks; it just happens that the African outback is populated mainly by... gee, I don't know... mostly blacks? Isn't that Odd? The game isn't even out so we can't say all the zombies in it will be black, but even then, the region is mostly black. There would be no possible way to make a game with ONLY JEWS being affected by a virus, as it would imply that jews are a race (not a religion), and that would be racism. Furthermore, there was no region populated mostly (99%) by jews in 2000 years until the state of Israel was born; then again, not even the state of Israel, because, as I just told you, it is populated by arabs too.

So, that's why Capcom CAN make a game like that and NOT be racist, because they're not implying only blacks can be affected. It just happens that the setting they put is a mostly black environment. There are no "mostly jewish" environments in the world. You could only do that by setting the game in WW2 concentration camps, and the context WOULD be racist. This context isn't racist. They're not putting a KKK guy that "happens to be there to kill blacks". It's just an american soldier seeking what the hell is going on, and it JUST HAPPENS that in africa there are a lot of native africans.

Yes, RE4 has only spaniards as Zombies, but they never say the virus can ONLY inflict spaniards. THAT would be racist, and it's not the case. Also, you can only (or mostly) find spaniards on spanish villages, I tell you because I've been to spain and it is a very homogeneous country on the countryside (not so on the cities).

RE5 would be racist if only blacks were affected by the virus. It's probably not the case.

Why would it be racist to ONLY feature jews? Because there's no place on earth where you can ONLY find jews. That would seem suspicious, unlike Africa where you can find areas where there are ONLY blacks, or spain where there are ONLY spaniards. In Israel, you can't find a city or town which has only jews, as every city and town has both jews and arabs. So, assuming only jews were affected by a disease, that would seem suspicious. So, if a german was sent there, the coincidence would be too much.

On the other hand, whites versus blacks... well, not every white nation slaved blacks, so you can't generalize the way you can with germans and jews. You can't really suspect unless you're too paranoid. The only ones that can associate whites and blacks with slavery are people sensitive to it; I don't think everyone is still as conscious about slavery as they are about WW2 (even though both were just as tragic). The ones that can associate germans and jews with mass murder is... pretty much everyone except skinheads. And making up a situation like that on a game would be harder than a RE5 situation.

to me, that game was the equivilant of the old 50's Warner Bros cartoons, with the big lipped Black people, and huge nosed Native Americans.

how can a game, set in Mexico, with a move called "Burrito Rampage!" (or something like that) *NOT irritate the hell out of you? especially when Eidos, the guys making the game, are in *EUROPE, and there didn't seem to be a Latino game designer in the bunch.

i'm not saying that games with Latin and Black people *NEED to be made *ONLY by Latin people and Blacks, but that, if you're going to make a game with a *STEREOTYPICAL portrayal of a race, at least, maybe, have a few of them on your team.

If it turns out that it's all black people serving as cannon fodder, with the white man saving the day and then having sex at the end, then we know what to think.

If it turns out that it actually has a deep complex storyline where characters are not just stereotypes (Alyx Vance wasn't a lead but she wasn't just girl with huge boobs)and actually have personalities, then we'll know what to think.

If a movie script calls for a certain location/dialog, they're generally not considered "racist". Videogames are a form of entertainment just like movies. You'll have a hard time convincing people who don't understand the gaming culture otherwise.

I'm a black man, and i've experienced racists acts all of my life. (i remember singing, "jump down turn around pick a bail of cotton", and other slave songs in my elementary school with me being the only black student in my class.) Bottom line: This isn't a racist game.

It's "ok" when white people get killed in a game because:

1. They are usually killed by another white person
2. There is really no reason for it to be a problem. It's not like white people were oppressed.

Black people on the other hand:

1. Most lead videogame characters are white, and black people are usually some gangster stereotype or cannon fodder
2. Even though it might not be racist, seeing a black character killed by a white protagonist to "save the day" will always always remind black audiences of the slavery days. THAT's why its such a big deal when a black person gets killed by a white person.

Want proof? Make a game where one of the missions is to drive a plane loaded with explosives into one of the most important buildings in a generic country. I guarantee you that people will talk about it. Because of the history of 9/11. If 9/11 didn't happen, no one would care. It'd be just another videogame scenario.

You make some good points. But about white people never being oppressed or being slaves is not 100 percent true. Just look at the Roman Empire. Most of the slaves in the Roman Empire were white. But I guess no one thinks of that cause it was such a long time ago.

And many white people have had hard times too. Just look at the early immigration of Italian people in America. They were treated like dirt. My Great Grand father who came from Italy had to change his name just so he could get a job.

throughout the course of history there has always been slaves and oppressions, the romans enslaved pretty much all of Europe and the English opressed the Scots for hundreds of year too. Being a Scotsman myself, I harbour no hatred towards my English bretheren. It was a sad period in history, much in the same way slavery was in the US. I will give you that slavery was a relatively recent period in american history and there still are many racists in the US today (hell, even the world). But to say that certainthings remind you of slavery, is just ridiculous. First off, you were not a slave, you were born witht the same rights as every american. You personally did not have to suffer through slavery - your great grandparents, perhapsm but not you.

But capcom is a japanese company, they have absolutley no idea that certain members of the american public will take this view. IMO, any character that is killed is used for the purposes of carrying the story forward. If there are audiences that find the killing of a black person by a white character, then they are seriously over sensitive. When I see an English character in a film kill a Scots character, I do not think back to the days of old where the Scots were opressed, I see a plot advancement in a film.

not a race. And I'm Hispanic, which is a race and not a color, but not descriptive of my ethnicity. Puerto Rican is my heritage, but I wasn't born there. Spanish is my language at home, but there are more variations of Spanish than what I use. I live in Barstow CA, yet I was raised in Orlando FLA. My diet was mostly puerto rican and southern/country influenced, yet living in the Southwest has made me eat more burritos and tacos than I have noticed. And you know what? I like chinese food better!

Did I forget to mention that I'm a American citizen? It's too hard to chose from all these facets. So RE5 being racist isn't true, since I myself wasn't offended by RE4, which was set in a Spanish theme.

Personally, I think this has far much more to do with website hits and political sensationalism than actual the content of the game.

If you read the comments section, while some are ignorant insults towards the blogger, some have made great points and when she is called on it, she backtracks and tries to make out that she was writing tounge in cheek.

It is also alarming to see that while yes I agree that some of the comments were ignorant and insulting, there were far more comments cohesive comments against her political/ sensationalist minds set. butwhat concerns me the most is that the front page of the website concentrated only on the negative/insulting posts inferring that the ONLY reason she was insulted was that she was black.
