Kotick Irritated by Xbox Live

This is starting to become a bit of a habit. Activision boss Bobby Kotick has decided to flex his corporate biceps once again by claiming that if the games industry wants to move forward it needs to break free of the shackles imposed upon it by console platform holders.

Or in other words, why should punters pay Microsoft for the privilege of playing Activision’s games online?

The story is too old to be commented.

"Or in other words, why should punters pay Microsoft for the privilege of playing Activision’s games online?"

“We’ve heard that 60 per cent of Microsoft’s subscribers are principally on Live because of Call of Duty"
“We don’t really participate financially in that income stream."

I see where this is going! I imagine that Activision will try to find some way to make these people pay them instead. He is just mad they arent getting a part of the cake...

Activision is the worst money centered company in gaming this generation...

Yeah that's pretty much true.

Acticonsole coming after 2012? I expect that the publishers will start questioning why they're paying the platform holders when they could do it themselves, give large exclusivity bonuses and rake in a huge amount of the 'core' audience.

If not that then you may see massive deals with the big publishers to give huge bonuses to one platform or the other for slices of the premium subsciptions.

For instance - imagine next gen any gamer on the 360 can play cod without live gold - but pay acti instead. MS might not mind so much as they'll still get the licencing fee, the box sale. A gold sub may get extra features like clanning etc.

I expect there to be a far more important role next gen for what publishers want, rather than what gamers want.

Welcome to capitalism..

Where would the ps3/360 be without the multiplats? No EA madden, no fifa, no cod, no battlefield, no NFS, no burnout, no crysis 2, no l4d.

If i were kottick or the head of EA i'd be well on the way to ramping up my own exclusive console system. Either from scratch, or with licensed stuff from the manufacturers they could make much more money.

Actually for once I agree with him.. microsoft are earning money from games his milk label makes. Not to mention xbl doesn't even deserve to cost anything.. next to pc gaming (which is free) it's got nothing.

Maybe its not fair to pay for the online part..

But lets just say for once if you should pay for the online part who should get the money MS or Activision?

I think its MS... You could say the same about consoles:

"Microsoft/Sony are earning money from games his milk label makes"

People buy a console to play games.. The money goes the console maker and if you buy a game it goes to the game maker... If Activision want all the money "they deserve" they should make their own console...

Online is a part of the Xbox 360 hence MS should get the cash... Now if Activision really is that greedy they can make some kind of monthly fee for MW2 (like WOW), but I predict it would scare away all their customers...

We already seen Monster Hunter Frontier working out a monthly fee beside Xbox Live Gold... But atleast they give u 12 months Xbox Live Gold when you buy MH F, so you only have to pay the monthly fee for MH F...

Kodick just needs to STFU already. You Killed your golden goose, pissed off your hardcore fan base, and shovel out the same shit year after year. BTW it's Microsoft servers "I" am playin on and paying for. Not yours mister Kodick. Go ahead and charge me to play for CoD. I'll just go play one of the other free generic shooters.
