Q&A: Ninety Nine Nights Producer Tak Fujii On The Extreme Differences Between East And West

As Western design philosophies have taken on increasing market dominance, how do Japanese designers view their differences -- and what do they see as their mandate as they aim to keep pace? Ninety Nine Nights II producer Tak Fujii sees an important marriage of scenario and distinctive technology evolution as a primary goal.

The newly-launched Ninety Nine Nights II is an extreme hack and slash game in the vein of Dynasty Warriors or Sengoku Basara, but versus its competitors boasts some one million troops to dispatch of simultaneously. The game releases this week, and was developed by Feelplus under Q Entertainment, and is being published in North America by Konami.

Gamasutra got a chance to speak with Konami-side producer Fujii about the game's unique qualities. Fujii previously spent several years working on the Pro Evolution Soccer franchise, familiarizing himself with Western game taste there.

Jack Klugman5046d ago

The guys first language is not english.. grow up.

Blaze9295046d ago

calm down. no one is making fun of his dialect - it's the way he was acting during that conference. Not being able to speak English and acting like a total drugged up douche are two different things.

Iamback5046d ago

boring pointless interview. japanese developers in their little world still think they are best, well you are not. We are not living in 90s back when you would have western games put in corner and above that write "western dog shit". His game is stupid and just another generic japanese games, no one cares about and here he is talking how they have to change, ok. maybe HHG can help him, he seems to know stuff

dizzleK5046d ago

the main difference? big american penis.

Lich1205045d ago

Also... Europe....

Oh and Australia.

Especially in Africa.

Yup, definitely in Africa.

blodulv5046d ago (Edited 5046d ago )

"wun myrun truuuuuuuuz.... wooowwwww".

Man, that conference was just full of win.

carlos4245046d ago

For starters, try making games without little elf-looking children as the main protagonists. It's like, gaming for pedophiles. Ok, so I exaggerate a little, but the majority of Japanese-made games seem geared to a very young audience. Back when I was fourteen that was ok but now that I'm a little older (alright, a lot older) they don't have the same appeal. Especially rpg's. I can't stand jrpg's. Gotta go western every time.

Top 10 Sequels Nobody Asked For

COGconnected: Some sequels come as a result of the artists behind it truly believing an IP deserves a second chance, could be improved with just a few small tweaks, or is indeed good enough to warrant a sequel. These ones do not.

Loads of people asked for a sequel to Knack, including myself.

The first game was good fun, clearly rushed for launch, but a good launch title for PS4.

rainslacker2012d ago

Yeah, I know a lot of people who liked the game, and said they wouldn't mind a sequel which improved on the original.

SuperSonic912012d ago

Knack 2 is so much fun for couch co-op.

sprinterboy2012d ago

Great for co/op keeping the kids entertained

Platformgamer2012d ago

you stole the words from my mouth.
knack is so underrated

NotanotherReboot2012d ago

So how come "loads of people" didn't buy the game?

Teflon022012d ago

Half a milli is pretty fine for that game actually

rainslacker2012d ago

Loads of people did. Loads of people also played it on PS+.

Although, I don't really know what the actual numerical value is of a load, unless it's the kind of load that we usually see used to criticize Sony or its games.

Akarogg 2012d ago

It sold about as well as Doom on Switch

The great dunk spoke, and knack 2 was goty before it even dropped. Spaghetti. Meatballs. Puerto Rico.

Amplitude2012d ago

Knack 2 and Kane and Lynch 2 were so good
Cool article though aha mostly all true.

Still waiting for Kanye and Lynch 3 to solve that insane cliffhanger ending

PhantomS422012d ago

I will always want more Naughty Bear. Those games are like bad SyFy movies, just so awful but so fun.

Retroman2012d ago (Edited 2012d ago )

Knack 1-2 was Fantastic...,.... hope Knack 3 being developed.
Can't wait for Ratchet and clank 2
Ps4

King_Noctis2012d ago

I wonder what would happen if Knack was multiplatform. Would people defend it that much.

rainslacker2012d ago (Edited 2012d ago )

I think people probably wouldn't even pay attention to it at all. There is no denying that exclusives do get a bit of a bump in notoriety. Same could be said for any number of mid-tier game which is multi-plat. It doesn't really get that much attention outside of an announcement, maybe an occasional screen shot or marketing blurb, and then some reviews on release. Quite a few mid-tier titles that are exclusive...especially those from 1st party, get a lot more attention.

That being said, the first one was pretty fun for a launch title. The second one was really good, although still had some room to do things better.
