Joystick Division ranks their picks for the best gaming machines ever. Handheld consoles are not included
Wow that is one crap of a list.
So because the PS3 didn't make it, that makes it a crap list?
it should be on the list for improving online gaming but not number 3 considering it uses same dvd technology as the ps2 and it wasnt the first console to bring online gaming to the masses, it improved upon it,it has one of the worst failure rates in the history of any electronic device, certain games cant be played in full (ie forza for arcade owners),theres just to many little niggles about the 360 to be number 3 dreamcast should be number 3 ps3 should also be on the list just for the new franchises it has brought this gen,and for it making bluray mainstream which is actually a massive feat but again not at number 3 purely for the ridiculous launch price and not having a great online at launch
Wii should be at no. 2 because its the most revolutionary console since NES. And frankly, N64 is the superior console of the 5th generation, so it should be ranked higher than PSOne. Just selling more copies doesn't make a console the best and it doesn't do justice to PS2 at no. 2 and ya, PS3 is better than PS2, Xbox 360 and Dreamcast, so it should definitely be on the list. *sighs*
why the hell is the 360 #4? Wii should be rated higher since at least it brought innovative and took casual gaming by storm. 360 only brought RROD and paid online fees.
What a stupid list! This guy's opinion doesn't count. How can you have #10, 9, 8, and 4 on that list. Those systems didn't even win that generation. And #4 will be third this generation haha. The Dreamcast was 4th haha.
this person has never heard of a PlayStation followed by Three in his life?
Tin foil hatted 360 fanboys. They put the Wii above the N64, man. I only had to get to #7 to spit on this dumb list. So, 360 > Wii > N64?! GTFO mah internets!!
"How can you have #10, 9, 8, and 4 on that list. Those systems didn't even win that generation. And #4 will be third this generation haha" Ah yes, the classic "sales equal quality" argument. By your reasoning, a top ten list would not even be possible since we are on the sixth generation now, and you seem to believe that only the "winners" should be listed.
@ soxfan - We're now on the 7th generation of consoles actually. Anyway, this is a terrible list but it doesn't even come close to the level of fail achieved by Gamedaily with their list. Google it if your interested. I won't even bother linking to that unholy debacle.
ps3 , im sorry but the 360 does not deserve to be on the list, its a terrible console.
Who is listed on the 3rd page? I cannot see it for some reason.
4. Xbox 360 3. Atari 2600 2. PS2 1. Nintendo Entertainment System-3rd Generation
*Cheers the Xbox 360* #4 all time, not bad at all.
They should put all of the *Top Ten Consoles* articles together and create a "top ten of the top ten" of sorts. hehe
I dont know how a console that shouldve been ordered a mass recall ends up in a top 10.
esp one that doesn't have as many as great exclusives as its competitor.
360 ahead of the SNES, PS1, & Genesis is a huge fail.
So true. I'd say objectively:PS2 and SNES fight for 1-2, Genesis+CD, PS1 3-4. My personal list would be 90's PC gaming, PS2, Genesis+CD, SNES, PS1 360 and PS3 have less genres than before and there are way too many shooters (FPS especially) to be considered in the top 4.
Current gen consoles shouldn't even be included seeing as the current gen hasn't ended yet.
Intelligent one ! ON THE ARTICLE : next time, try to recognize what you're aiming for..stupid =\
i'd probably put the 2600, genesis and snes as 1,2 and 3 but other than that the list is ok. people really need to wise up to the fact that the ps3 simply isn't as beloved as they think it should be. i love my ps3 but i don't look at it as a game machine, the 360 FEELS like a game console. sorry, that's just my opinion. i'm not such a sony fanboy that i'm unable to see reality.
well when you see a console like the n64(its overall line up was nothing compared to the ps1) being on that list for its few amazing exclusives, then you think of what the ps3 has accomplished with its also amazing exclusives, and its complete 180 of its reputation, oh and blu ray of course... well it makes you wonder if the author is just a wee little bit biased.
the N64 is on there because it was the first console to really give us big wide open 3D worlds. Mario 64 was absolutely astounding at the time, it was the first of its kind. sony tried to emulate that with Croc, and did so with pretty good success, but the PS just couldnt do what the N64 did. the N64 also brought Rumble to consoles, along with analogue control. 2 things that sony then added to the PS after the fact. the N64 also brought 4 player multiplayer without having to buy expensive add-ons. do you remember the multi-tap for the PS and PS2? probably not. that was the ONLY way to get more than 2 players on the PS and PS2, and they were not cheap. the N64 thoroughly deserves a spot in EVERY top 10 video game consoles list.
lol slow down there i believe you have just pegged me for someone who just started gaming with the 360 and ps3.. when in fact ive had a controller in my hand since 93 although i didnt start serious gaming until i got my n64 in 96, and more so when i got my ps1 in 98. good points there, its been quite awhile since ive touched an n64 one or even thought of one, im surprised i let such things slip by me. i will also note that i was in no way saying that the n64 didnt belong on that list, i was trying to point out by comparison why the ps3 also should have had a spot on that list. and yes i had a multitap for my ps1 and then for my ps2.
explain to me why the PS3 should be on the list though. its list of good first party exclusives is NOT enough, because frankly other consoles have had far better lists. out of the list, these are the revolutionary things each console brought to the table: 1. NES: - basically made video games how we know them today 2. PS2: - movie playback as a standard feature in a game console - graphics that werent just 'kiddy' - games that were for 'adults' 3. 2600: - basically started video games 4. 360: - integrated online into EVERYTHING in the console - let you play your own music at all times no matter what youre doing - let you use your game console as a media centre extender - wireless controllers as standard - HD graphics - user upgradable HDD - multiple SKUs 5. SNES: - 4 button controllers + shoulder buttons - incredible amount of new IPs that would go on for decades 6. Playstation: - CDs used for games allowing unthought of space for games - game console works as a CD player - 3D graphics - incredible new IPs that would last for decades - memory cards 7. wii: - motion control - brought the casual crowd in to gaming in a HUGE way 8. Mega Drive/Genesis: - more than 2 buttons on a controller - more mature games - classic franchises that will forever be associated with gaming 9. Nintendo 64: - analogue control - rumble - open world 3D games - 4 player without add-ons 10. Dreamcast: - online play - VMUs - triggers on controllers now having looked at that, what does the PS3 offer that none of those did: PS3: - ??? blu-rays are DVDs but in a higher resolution, so their playback is just like DVD playback on the PS2. online? 360 already integrated that. motion control? wii already did that. upgradeable HDD? 360 already did that. great new IPs? every console has brought them, but the PS3s havent stood the test of time like the Megadrive/SNES/PS have. wireless controllers? 360 already did that (and bluetooth is the same as wireless in every way for controllers). the only thing i can think of for the PS3 as being revolutionary is PlayTV, but thats hardly worthy of putting it in the top 10 on that alone. now nothing i said here is opinion, its just fact. the PS3 didnt really bring anything new to the table like the other consoles did. the 360 launched 12 months before the PS3, so it gets the credit for bringing all the things that both the 360 and PS3 bring to the table since it was out first. i look forward to your response, although i wont be able to comment.
really? you cant think of anything.... so by exactly what standards are we judging these consoles? doing something new? something first? something the best? for example:the n64 was the first with rumble and analog, but then the ps1 had the dualshock which obviously took both concepts one step ahead with both dual rumble motors and analog sticks eventually proving to be the more prefered controller. one more thing before i state my reasons; the xbox 360 actually didnt have upgradable hard drives first- the only size available at the ps3's launch were the 20gb ones which were for people who were unfortunate enough to purchase the core. so... obviously any ps3 hdd can be upgraded the moment you pull it from the box. PS3: -Blu Ray. you can dismiss this all you want but in fact the blu ray has had a profound impact on games, with some games clocking in at around 30gbs on the system and some multiplats coming on several disks and/or cutting content to fit on the limited space microsofts dvd9 with the atrocious 2gbs of security crap its clear that the blu ray was more than a new movie format that sony was pushing out. -open standards(NON PROPRIETARY) the ps3 is the most open console to date allowing you to use all kinds of general accesories with the system like bluetooth headsets, keyboards/mice, standard 2.5 sata hard drives and was the first system to allow the use of standard flash drives and the older models had memory stick, secure digital, and compact flash ports. -the ps3 is the most future proof console released, no other console released was as ready to adapt and continue to improve(graphically) as the ps3 is. -(and... how could you not see this one?) this also ties into how the ps3 is future proof. the ps3 is the only existing console that can do 3d. -the ps3 has done a complete 180... oh how it was fun to hate on the ps3, but now with sony having trouble keeping it in stock it seems everyone likes it now. its all due to a combination of some of the best games out and the recent price drop. -well then theres the games. perhaps this is a bit too subjective, but then so are most of the reasons for the other consoles as well well there you have it.
"PS3: - ??? blu-rays are DVDs but in a higher resolution, so their playback is just like DVD playback on the PS2. online? 360 already integrated that. motion control? wii already did that. upgradeable HDD? 360 already did that. great new IPs? every console has brought them, but the PS3s havent stood the test of time like the Megadrive/SNES/PS have. wireless controllers? 360 already did that (and bluetooth is the same as wireless in every way for controllers). the only thing i can think of for the PS3 as being revolutionary is PlayTV, but thats hardly worthy of putting it in the top 10 on that alone. now nothing i said here is opinion, its just fact. the PS3 didnt really bring anything new to the table like the other consoles did. the 360 launched 12 months before the PS3, so it gets the credit for bringing all the things that both the 360 and PS3 bring to the table since it was out first. i look forward to your response, although i wont be able to comment." 360 barely has it's own studios let alone it's own original games. You gotta be [email protected] sh#tting me thinking 360 has great new IPs. PS3 has come out with Uncharted, Modnation Racers, MAG (ONLY 256 PLAYER FPS ON A CONSOLE), Heavy Rain, Little Big Planet (CREATE, PLAY, and SHARE), etc. What you said is YOUR IGNORANT OPINION ON THE PS3. BLUETOOTH IS NOT THE SAME AS 360's wireless connectivity. 360's controller use fricking AAs for crying out loud. PS3's are built in and last technically FOREVER. (I have yet to see my controllers die on me, had my PS3 since 2007.) It's a more consistant wireless that has less synchronization issues. PS3 was USED by the US MILITARY TO POWER THEIR SUPERCOMPUTERS, it is also used by fricken' hospitals to DO RESEARCH ON diseases. (Folding Home) This console IS one of a kind, do you know ANY console that is capable of doing this? 3D as well, with the 1.3 HDMI that makes it capable. XBOX 360 isn't even true HD, since it has HDMI 1.2...IT HAS LIMITATIONS. 360's online is JOKE, pay just to play online? PC games don't even charge to play, and it has dedicated servers. Majority of the games that the Xbox 360 ARE AVAILABLE on the PS3. 360 is not even worth owning anymore. This is my list though: 1. SNES 2. PS2 3. N64 4. PS1 5. Sega Genesis 6. PS3 7. NES 8. Dreamcast Only had a taste for Sony/Nintendo/some Sega. Shennnnmmmmuuuueeee.
It was a pretty good list except I think ps3 should have been fourth not X-Box 360, I mean X-Box 360 had the red ring of death problem when it came out, thats not innovating!
AGREED. ps3 is better than the xbox360 everyone knows that.
sorry but xbox360 on the list??? who wrote this a 12 year old?
Beat a dead horse much?
that the author made that list just to put the 360 up there and he didnt put it at Number 1 obviously not to be so obvious but put it in top area and filled in the rest excluding PS3, everyone knows PS3=PERFECTION
That they put the 360 above the PS1, SNES, and Genesis is a downright joke and travesty. It has done nothing to be placed above those three consoles. Hell, it hasn't done anything to be placed above the Wii or PS3.
This list is so fail it makes my head hurt lmao.
1. PS3 60GB 2. Super Nintendo 3. PS2 4. NES 5. PlayStation
I wonder on what bases the author use for the list, because it certainly wasn't sells. I say the snes has the greatest classics, ps2 has the best library, and ps3 has the greatest value, and the 360 can kiss my ass
1. SNES 2. PS2 3. PS1 4. N64 5. PS3 i have snes first cause it was the first console i didnt see as a gimmick and when i felt gaming taking off. The author states NES did that, but it didnt for me. PS2 second, because it was a fantastic home system when it launched and dominated by diversity. 3rd ps1, because it introduced CDs as opposed to the bulk cartridges and it showed success. Fourth N64, because it brought fantastic games like Mario 64, Star Fox 64, DK, etc, i think this the last time we have seen all of NINTENDO's greatest franchises on the same console... the wii just needs a star fox sequel. the ps3 is my 5th, because never has there been so much first party support. Sony sells a console based on differentiation, and they do it by offering games across all genres. The PS3 is also a relatively average home entertainment system, you can use it for movies, pictures, videos, music, has dolby, etc.
But, I agree with the NES being first. Blaster Master was my favourite game for that system! If I had to make a top 5 list, it would look something like this: 1. NES 2. PS3 3. SNES 4. PS2 5. Gamecube EDIT: How could I forget the PS1?! Scratch out Gamecube.. 4. PS1 5. PS2 *fixed*
i have gamecube in my top 10, but not as high. The disk format hurt them. my memorable titles for it are ssbm, lugie's mansion, and zelda.
fuck yeah, Blaster Master!!! my list 1.PS1 2.SNES 3.PS2 4.Genesis 5.NES @spektical-dont forget Eternal Darkness
No console from this generation should be on this list. I say you wait to include them when the next-gen is out.
What rank did the Atari 600, Family Computer, & PS3 get?
only on N4G. We're only deliver the best of fanboy entertainment :D
snes @ 5 lol ahh yeh ok. I dont think so.
This list is retarded as far as order goes and you fools who dont list Xbox 360 in your personal list are just as retarded to those who dont put Playstation on their list PSX 4L over all the rest, nothing beats the PS1 and to those PS1 fans like me we all know this line URNOTE
You can play psone games on all ps3. This list is bullshit if there is no ps3 on the list it's bullshit free online bluray movies new ips that are some of the best games I have ever played and free online to the masses I'm saying that again cause it was really awesome of Sony not to force customers to pay for online gaming. I like being a tough judge calling people out for there shit but Sony did everything right with the ps3 it really does everything.
I've owned everyone of those consoles and Wii is easily the worst. How can something so funny sounding be so boring? And 360? Really? They took everything that was good about XB1 and hamstrung it. XB 1 was a much better console and should have 360's spot. Even the name 360 is just a reaction to Sony as M$ was too scared to call it XB2. Thats grade school level pathetic. And all 3 Playstations should be in the top 5. Each one signaled a new generation and changed the playing field before them and upped the ante each time. PS2 was such a technical leap over PSOne it really made M$ and Nintendo step up with their consoles when the finally came out. If not for Sony M$ wouldnt even be in the business and gaming would be stagnant by now if left to Nintendo and Sega with endless Mario vs Sonic head to heads.
My list 5.Xbox360 4.PS1 3.PSP 2.PS2 1.PS3
Great list, but I personally would've swapped the 360 for the PS3. I'm surprised the Gamecube didn't make the cut. A very underrated console, indeed, but it had a great lineup of games.
If we are going by sales or even the best game library; PS2 is #1 with the DS overtaking it this year or next.
that list is garbage, the wii above the genesis? SNES at #5? The two best systems of all time are the SNES and PSX. I'm basing that off of their software library. my personal top ten 10.DreamCast 09.Genesis 08.TurboGrafx-16 07.NES 06.PS2 05.Gamecube 04.PS3 03.N64 02.PSX 01.SNES
Thats a good honest list you got there. I would put psone at two as well with snes at the top. I wouldve put the mega drive up higher but that's my list. But a good spread you got there.
My top 10 home consoles: 1 - PlayStation 2 - Sega Mega Drive (aka Genesis) 3 - Nintendo 64 4 - PlayStation 2 5 - Super Nintendo Entertainment System 6 - Sega Dreamcast 7 - Sega Saturn 8 - Nintendo Game Cube 9 - Nintendo Entertainment System 10 - Vectrex and Xbox goes to 11 PS3, X360 and Wii are current generation home consoles so it doesnt count.
Super Nintendo all the way baby.
To "T104G.com - Top 10 Lists for Gamers" What shit content.
360 should be at 10. List = FAIL
360 at number 4 makes this list reek of fanboyism - and PS3 has a far more diverse library of games and infinitely more value in terms of price (and reliability). Don't get me wrong I love my Gears, Halo and mostly superior multiplats but PS3 has a lot more quality exclusive games in almost all genres. Kudos to MS for bringing online and achievements mainstream but free online and trophies are better not to mention PS3 way more open and customizable.
