well looks like they fixed most of the issues from the older models except the cd scratching problem..but we can finally say Microsoft did good this time

blitz06235467d ago

Well what else were they supposed to say, that they didn't learn?

Anon19745467d ago

I mean, you have to wonder what the ongoing cost of RROD is. By taking that billion dollar hit they cleverly kept the cost of RROD out of the public eye. It's like saying "Hey, I lost $1000 today," and then the next day saying "Hey! I made $10! Good for me!" This type of accounting trick is good for keeping the real costs of things under wraps. And it obviously works. Plenty of people claim that Microsoft's EDD division is profitable, and has been for some time, but what they did is no different than me losing 1 million today and then claiming I'm doing well because I make 70,000 the next year.

So you have to wonder, is the 1 billion spent? Are they still chipping away at that 1 billion with RROD, or have they burned through that billion and the cost of RROD is being reflected on their financial statements?

At this point, we really have no idea if the 360's even profitable as Microsoft won't tell us what the 360 brings in, what software brings in, how much it costs to make and ship 360's or what the ongoing costs of the 3 year warranty come to. All we know is 360 sales have been in decline for 5 consecutive quarters, 360 software sales are also in decline and 3rd party development is in decline. Microsoft claims EDD profits are up because of "non-gaming" reasons - but they'll never give the public a look at what's really going on with the 360. My guess is that Microsoft's shareholders wouldn't like what they see.

HolyOrangeCows5467d ago

I think they learned that they can get away with anything. Broken consoles, online fees, etc...

1-1.5 Billion is just the figure they gave when they first announced the 3 year warranty. Peter Moore was still working for M$ back then.

I dare say they thought RRoD would be cleared up much sooner than it was. No one could have guessed it would still be an issue 4 or 5 years into the consoles lifecycle.

Who really know what they've spent, but just to put into perspective 10M consoles at $200 each is $2B. It wouldnt surprise me if they went way over that billion, but we'll never know.

trancefreak5467d ago

I wouldn't call scratching the media we put into our console is a they did good here. The little slot dvd is where we put are hard earned money into. I don't want it scratched.

iceman29295466d ago

If im not mistaken, when they said that the xbox was profitable, they meant that all costs incurred due to R&D, Manufacturing and RROD/E74 have been recuperated and sales are now generating profit.

Im no expert accountant (hell i only took my first accounting class last year...) but any RROD that happen in the present year should be counted as current operating expenses. So they put aside the one time liability to cover most costs for the first three years and any subsequent costs would only take a bite out of current year revenues.

Anon19745466d ago

After working in the brokerage industry for over a decade before my return to school to be a game programmer, I've poured through hundreds, if not thousands of financial updates. Microsoft keeps their 360 info pretty close, and to my knowledge have never claimed that the 360 is profitable unlike Sony who last year confirmed that the PS3 has been profitable as a platform for some time.

When a company claims they're profitable it in no way indicates that R&D expenses have been recouped or that past losses have been made up in any way. Indeed, just looking at Microsoft's EDD division they haven't yet come close to recouping their reported losses since the 360 launched with the profits they're currently reporting. On top of that, current profits made by the entire division seem to be unrelated to the 360 at all. Microsoft, while not reporting actual numbers, goes out of their way in the updates filed with the SEC that the profit in the EDD division is due to increases in "non-gaming revenue". As I pointed out in my earlier post, Microsoft has shown multiple back to back quarters of year on year declines in 360 sales, they're reporting decreased 360 hardware revenue and falling 360 sales revenue.

We really don't know what's going on behind the scenes because Microsoft doesn't release the specifics, however by setting up the 1 billion fund for warranty repairs, this would effectively keep RROD off the EDD books until the money runs out. If that billion is gone, then you're absolutely right, the cost of warranty replacements should be reflected in the EDD financial releases we see quarterly even if we can't see the amounts.

That was my point. We simply don't know what's going on. Investors often have short memories. I'm guessing not many look at the EDD's financial updates and say "Sure they're making 100 million now, but didn't they just have to write off 1 billion a couple of years ago for something? What happened with that?"

I guess my history in the brokerage industry just compels me to naturally ask those kind of questions when I'm considering investments for my portfolios. I may be training as a game programmer now, but I just can't turn it off after decade of scrutinizing financial reports. These are the type of questions I ask.

Thats not true, the red ring problem is still as pravalent as ever. It just stops it from happening AS frequently. They didn't stop anything.

basicsameh5145467d ago

@ViciousBoston
oh relly bring me real proof not just 3 videos

T9X695467d ago

When was the last time you seen reports of hundreds of Xbox owners bitching about RROD? It happens now as much as the YLOD on PS3, which isn't very often. I use to get messages on Xbox all the time about RROD, now I havn't seen one in months.

thehitman5467d ago

You dont get much reports because its a common thing now and people dont really care anymore because its a known issue and not as big of a deal to many. My friend who bought his 360 early last year had his RROD late last year around xmas time which sucked and he ended up getting a ps3 for the holiday until he got his 360 repaired so its still a big issue. If MS fixed the problem with the new models which I bet every1 hopes they did is sort of irrelevant at this point considering there are 40mil 360s out there all RROD prone.

blitz06235467d ago

Because getting RROD isn't news to anyone anymore

ReBurn5467d ago (Edited 5467d ago )

Prevalence is the number of total occurrences in a population at any given time. Incidence is the number of new occurrences in a population over a given time period.

In the case of the 360 S I would imagine that the prevalence is really low considering there aren't many confirmed incidences and it has only been available for a couple of weeks. So ViciousBoston's assertion that the the RROD problem is a prevalent is ever is likely patently false in the context of the 360 S.

In the case of the original 360 the prevalence of RROD is relative, but over time the incidence rate will most likely rapidly taper off since that model isn't being produced any more. But in this context ViciousBoston's assertion is more credible, but not necessarily true since the timeframe wasn't well defined.

Statistical analysis is fun. Everyone should try it!

trancefreak5467d ago

funny 1 xbox lover wants link and proof while the either says ylod is a known fact without question.

I have never had a yellow light issue. Ever!

Now the 360 I totally gave up on it until i bought my jasper unit which is the best version Ive ever owned.

I do have a problem now with my launch ps3 60gb. It will freeze up in about 10min even idling. fan works no ylod yet so i might trade it into gamestop for that promotion for a slim. well see.

Hopefully this works out, but here on N4G, the bashing is about to begin!

Dim the lights please!

Mr Marbles5467d ago

love the thing, its so dam sexy, and it is solid as a rock. I now own three 360s, and each one I've purchased I love more than the last.

My PS3 slim feels like a cheap paper plate next to my new "360 250"

karl5466d ago

can say that they learned from their mistakes by looking at kinect...

they have even go worst with all this fake videos...

Foliage5466d ago

Too bad xbox fans haven't learned from their mistakes.

Well of course they have when a problem (RROD) cost you over 1 billion to fix for free of course you are going to learn from it and not repeat the same mistake again. So I doubt the next Xbox will have such high failure rate as the Xbox 360.

But at least they are trying to fix the newer models and decrease the failure rate.

cpt_kaos5467d ago

I'll be sitting on the fence for 6 months and see what happens before I purchase this one.

1Victor5467d ago

I recommend a year since that is their warranty expiration date.Nothing personal but I don't trust MS as much as I did before.

cpt_kaos5467d ago

Yeah mate I don't trust Microsoft much either more so not because of the 4 dud's I had but the crap service from there so called service center when trying to explain the situation to someone who barely understood english.

swice5467d ago (Edited 5467d ago )

Smart move. Victor said one year, which is smarter, but it's always smart to wait. Same thing with brand new car models: wait for a year so they can fix the bugs!

ForeAllEternity5467d ago

Not gonna take their word for it since PR doesn't handle QA

Godmars2905467d ago (Edited 5467d ago )

MS's PR people can always tryout as stand-up comedians...

Really hard to accept that when there were reports of units dieing within a few days of launch. Couldn't even be bothered to redesign it to keep it from eating discs, even if it was some idiot's fault for moving it.

The score for the first Plants Vs Zombies is such great, iconic music that it has a timeless quality. Not quite the level of Minecraft, but wonderful in its own right.

I hope it's a remake of the 1st game. But it's probably just the PS5 version of Red Dead Redemption 2

OtterX1d 19h ago

I hope a PS5 upgrade launches on the same day as announcement & it costs no more than $10. I already bought the Ultimate Edition once, they got good money from me.

I stopped playing completely 2 years ago until they did 60fps. I really didn't expect it would take this long & I didn't want to start completely over on PC.

GamerRN9h ago(Edited 9h ago)

I've been waiting for 60 to finish the game myself

hopefully we'll know by the end of tomorrow! *crosses fingers*

My wish is that its optimized for current gen machines, with some sort of story expansion. Undead nightmare 2! My 2nd wish is that it just shadow drops on the day of the announcement!.

Give me my RDR2 Undead Nightmare already.
