PSP 2 coming at Tokyo Games Show? Andrew House comments on Rumors

During the E3 Show 2010 Andrew House of SCEE was interviewed about the PSP 2. When the question was asked where all the PSP-successor rumors are coming from, he replied: "[We've got] no plans to discuss anything around next generation right now,".

So will they discuss it later? Maybe at Tokyo Games Show or Games Com 2010?

Well, they just announced a huge push to sell the PSP. Is it all to get rid of stock? Why would they hype the original if the PSP2 is coming in a year?

Because they have no option. If they don't hype it now and come up with a new system announcement at the end of the year. Nobody would buy PSP anymore and the sales are dying anyway. Just think of PSP essential (10 Bucks a game) and more. They are trying hard to get rid of stock.

I think they are in different markets for the most part. I don't think I know a kid under 12 that doesn't have a DS, I know no adults that have one. On the other hand I know plenty of adults that have one or more PSPs.

Now that's just in my experience, surely there are kids with PSPs and adults with DSs. But I think the DS demographic is definitely skewed younger than the PSP demographic. Personally I can't stand the DS, my kids have one but I hate the ergonomics of it. I don't own a PSP either.

Definite agreement in my experience. I have a DS and it's really worthless to me as an adult core gamer. Nintendo == "kid's toy", this is true for both the handheld and set top console markets.

That's why Nintendo'd stuff sells like crazy, though. Adults needs are complex and their tastes and requirements are fluid and changing. Kids and their parents just want cute cheap games, and MOST IMPORTANTLY there are simply way more kids who play games than adults.

Expecting Sony to go after that niche is sort of stupid given the market dynamics currently in play but idiots on the internet just want to declare a "winnner" and a "loser", so never mind how well the PSP does or is designed it "sucks" because a cheap kids toy outsells it. Well guess what? Toyotas outsell Ferraris.

Anyway, I think for PSP to be a viable kids' system they'd have to lower the price by quite a bit (kids are HARD on hardware), make games cheaper, get more younger kids IP licenses (DS == Pokemon for my son, for example), and make the system easier to use (transferring media, etc)... And really it's just not viable, they really have no mind share among kids right now.

I think it makes more sense to go after the adult core gamer market. This is where the iPhone has the potential to mess them up. I think they need APPs. Like productivity APPs, a better internet browser, 3G/4G capability, an eBook reader, etc. They also need to open up the platform to developers like Android and Apple have.

Also, to the haters: for the umpteenth time, the PSP has pushed nearly 60 million units. It's hardly a failure in terms of sales, there are simply fewer grown ups and smart Japanese kids in the world than American consumers/kids.

psp has sold 50+ mil, not bad but sales are lagging, the above comments about wanting to get rid of stock makes sense in a way, announcing a successor now would mean everyone would just wait for it to come and ignore the original

The PSP has sold more than the 360. The PSP is such a failure, with Sony's big push they may be able to increase sales by a lot.

By comparison to other handhelds that have challenged Nintendo for that particular market, the PSP has been a runaway success.

Not that it's DS levels of success, but for a first attempt, it's still pretty good.

PSP is a great system, but it's main competitor, the DS just has the support of too many franchises- Mario, Donkey Kong, etc. When Sony puts out the PSP2, they need to really pump in the games if they want it to sell.

Everyone loves handheld gaming there- it's also where I scored my first PSP back in 2006... ahh memories....

I'm hoping for a PSP2 but after the effort of the Go I can see it being at a jacked price and wouldn't be surprised if it was more expensive than a PS3... Sony have a history of making fantastic products but keeping out the the reach of the majority of the market with pricing mistakes...

psp2 will be awesome if you could play all psn/ps1/ps2/psp/minis games on it as well as many of those small pc games. Its gonna need to have a touch screen, long battery life and be small and safe to use. It cant use umd's.
Its gonna need a huge hardrive as well

I dont understand why they just dont take a ipod 4G add buttons and throw a big battery on it and it will still be small and have battery life.

The PSP2 desperately has to have it. And i think its possible to have PSP/PS1/PS2/Minis support. But not only that, remote play for all PS3 games?

Why are people afraid of a better version of UMD? This will definitely quarantee BC but a UMD with more storage capacity and faster loading times sounds okay to me. I mean u still have the option to DL games.

I think a PSP2 at TGS would be a smart move. With Sony now going to push the PSP more gives the new PSP games support. So Then at TGS Sony will show the PSP2. This way people buy the PSP games instead of waiting for PSP2 games instead.
