What are PlayStation 3 owners buying?

So what are PlayStation 3 owners buying? The gap in console sales has closed. There should be no reason that games like God of War 3 and Uncharted 2 shouldn't be able to rival the sales numbers of Halo 3. Especially when many regard those two games as two of the best this generation has to offer, and it is widely acknowledged that the PlayStation 3 is the most powerful console on the market capable of technical greatness that others are not. But, it can't be all people that bought a Slim are just using it play Blu-ray. I think Jim Sterling of Destructoid was really on to something when he stated in an interview with Hip Hop Gamer that 'while Sony is certainly capable of great things in the graphics department, it has some catching up to do in the gameplay department' Maybe it's just that simple, maybe people aren't just looking for over the top graphics that look better than everything they have ever seen or come to expect from a gaming console. Maybe they want more.

Our first console was the 360 but then we started to dislike Microsoft.

So we bought a spanking new 250 GB PS3 Slim baby!

We have:
Uncharted 2 Among Thieves
Metal Gear Solid 4
Little Big Planet
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2
Lego Star Wars the Complete Saga
Lego Batman
Lego Indiana Jones

Xbox 360
Resident Evil 5
Halo Wars
Halo 3 ODST
Golden Axe
Mass Effect 2
Street Fighter IV - we stopped buying at this game! No more

And as soon as we finish these awesome games will be buying some of the most compelling games on any console:

Ratchet and Clank Future
Toy Story 3 Exclusive Emperor Zurg Version
PlayStation Move
Sing and Draw
Little Big Planet 2
Gran Turismo 5
Killzone 3
The Last Guardian
ICO and Shadow of Colossus
Final Fantasy XIII Versus
Majin: The Forsaken Kingdom
Marvel vs Capcom 3

That is what you call balanced gaming for the whole family. So exclusive many choices. Just one FPS there.

I'm watching you PEE!

Personally, I would rather wait and save up my money over time for some quality varieties (i.e. Sony exclusives) than put down $200 + $60/yr for one single franchise that hasn't evolved much since Combat Evolved, namely Halo 3 + Halo 3: ODST + Halo: Reach (and maybe Halo Wars too).

Also, the author failed to mention that Halo 3 has been on sale for a console that HAS BEEN and IS STILL leading its competitor in user base (especially in North America where the margin is much wider). Yeah, the gap is closing, but it's been there for a long, long time and it is still there even today. So would it surprise anyone that Halo 3, which enjoyed a Hollywood-blockbuster-budget marketing outsells Sony exclusives? (though vgchartz's stats say otherwise)

Just because PS3 owners don't all rush out and buy the same game, this is seen as a problem? Years ago I read an excellent article about how the 360 would have a long term issue because the sales data showed that the 360 only appealed to certain types of games. Attach rates were high because every 360 owner rushed out and bought Halo 3, and Gears, and Gears 2, Modern Warfare, MW:2...etc while other games were ignored. The analysts showed this as evidence that the 360 lacked broad appeal.

And we've seen this demonstrated time and time again. Alan Wake, and excellent game, is struggling to break half a million where games like Heavy Rain easily leap 1 million. Banjo Kazooie doesn't sell while LittleBigPlanet hits 3.5 million. It's pretty much guaranteed that if it's not a shooter, it's going to sell better on the PS3.

And here we get confused articles saying this is a bad thing? If you're a developer and you're looking to sink a couple of years and millions of dollars into a game that isn't a shooter, what console are you going to focus on releasing it on. The Wii's a crap shoot. The 360 is no better. It's no wonder that Microsoft said in their last financial statement that 3rd party development on the 360 is in decline.

This article needs a reality check.

Does a lot of users buying the same game mean they are sheep, or does it mean a single game has found mass appeal.

We're buying more games than 360 owners :D

RageAgainstTheMShine3055d ago

Pirated games attach more on the 360 though -_^

Parapraxis3055d ago (Edited 3055d ago )

Mostly quality exclusives.
I currently own 30 retail games and about 10 PSN titles.

19 of the retail games I own are ONLY on PS3.

That's what I'm buying.

jakethemuss3055d ago (Edited 3055d ago )

of games in each topic. A list =/= a good counter to an argument. You need to utilise the games in context explaining why they suppliment your argument. Also alot of those a cross genre therefore I highly doubt you will enjoy all those games and you seem to be just listing games for the sake of it.

AAACE53055d ago

What he was trying to say is, You have games like Halo 3 selling 5-8 million or whatever (I don't care, don't like Halo anymore). Now that the gap between Ps3 and 360 unit sales are so close, he is wondering why the Ps3 exclusives can't generate the same type of numbers.

If Ps3 owners aren't buying the exclusives like crazy... what else are they buying is the question I think he's asking!

Either way, he made this comment to stir the pot, I don't care either way. I just wanted to explain what it seemed like he was saying.

oli3055d ago

they sale more because their 360's scratched the hell out of their games, so they baught another copy
off topic: WORLD CUP 2MORO!!!!!!!

sorceror1713055d ago

There are games on the 360 that sell huge, certainly. But I'd bet that there's a big peak around the games that sell the most, and then there's a lot of games that don't sell so well.

It seems the PS3 has a broader appeal - no one game or set of games dominates the PS3 market. No single game gets Halo 3 numbers, but on average games do better on the PS3; there's room for more good-sellers, though fewer great-sellers.

Of course, I don't care enough to actually go track down numbers to test this hypothesis. :->

MorganX3055d ago

Some of it is marketing. If Uncharted 2 were on the Xbox, I think you'd be seeing even more sales and much more marketing. There would probably be a Saturday morning Cartoon and a movie by now.

cyclindk3055d ago

I pointed a heat gun at mine when it did that and it's been working ever since, must have gotten cold?

FACTUAL evidence3055d ago

I guess no one payed attention to alan wake, splintecell, or ME2 sells. "Holla" at me when they sell over 3m...
