Gran Turismo and Halo Got a Long Way to Go to Catch Super Mario

Craig H: "And just for the record, the next time someone wants to rattle off random numbers from some company’s sales to you, simply point out that the original Super Mario Bros on the NES sold 40.23 million copies alone; and in total the Super Mario Bros franchise has topped well over 152 million. By comparison, Sony and Xbox are still in diapers when it comes to a successful franchise. And maybe that seems appropriate based on the behavior of their fanbase."

Now there's no arguing with real numbers. People can say what they want, but Mario is still the king!

Meodia_Art3056d ago

How many Mario games have been released? Exactly.

"By comparison, Sony and Xbox are still in diapers when it comes to a successful franchise. And maybe that seems appropriate based on the behavior of their fanbase."

I lol'd so hard. The author clearly forgot how many successful franchises are on the Wii compared to PS3 or 360. There's a reason why Nintendo always loses E3 and that's because they don't have many games people care for.

corneliuscrust3056d ago

Mario isnt hardcore enough for these kids!! Don't mess with them and their hardcore games!

Nintendo has no games people care for?
Yeah let's not forget which console is in the lead this gen by a country mile.

Biggest3056d ago

Yeah! You tell 'em, corneliuscrust! The Wii is selling because of all the awesome games! Wait. . . Getting a news flash.

THIS JUST IN! Fat mothers all across the world LOVE the Wii, but can't name any games other than Sports Resort and Wii Fit. Up later, why so many grandparents buy the Wii. And why games have nothing to do with it won't surprise you.

corneliuscrust3056d ago (Edited 3056d ago )

I never once said fat mothers don't like the wii, nor that they aren't running in droves to buy the wii.

My point is that THE WII HAS GAMES PEOPLE LOVE. People LOVE mario. They LOVE mario galaxy. They LOVE new super mario wii.

Both games have seen retail succes ****AND CRITICAL ACCLAIM**** Plain and simple.

New Super Mario Wii - 87
Mario Galaxy - 97

The Wii is selling well because it has games people love. Whether theyre 4, 94, black, white, mothers, fathers, whatever... they're not buying a Wii to play DVDs. They're buying it to play games because the wii has what they want to play. Whether that's Wii sports, mario, or the MASSIVE virtual console collection, doesn't matter.

If you cant wrap your teenage brain around that, then get back to school.
But go ahead and keep crying about grandmothers buying a wii or whatever...it won't matter.

Biggest3056d ago

Why can't your "teenage brain" comprehend what you typed?

"Yeah let's not forget which console is in the lead this gen by a country mile" does not translate to "My point is that THE WII HAS GAMES PEOPLE LOVE." I learned comprehension as a young child. I see you still have a while to go. I'm still trying to figure out why you brought DVDs into the mix. The truth is that Nintendo has been providing Mario/Zelda/Metroid/etc for years now. The Gamecube had all of those games. But for some reason the purple/blue beast didn't catch on the same as the Wii. There has to be something more to it than the games. Can you at least understand that?

Over half those super mario bros 3 sales were from bundles with the NES. Imagine how many GT 'sales' would be racked up if sony had dished it out with every playstation for several years as nintendo did with SMB3.

Obviously the writer sees that mario has been around for over two decades, thus racking up heavy total sales compared to those around less than half that time. Like Halo.

However well done nintendo for maintaining a strong franchise, its not the easiest thing in the world. Time hasnt been as kind to sonic.

pixelsword3056d ago

C'mon, no one even talked about Mario or Nintendo; This was a point of contention between Microsoft's Executive and a counter-argument by another website. Now this website is merely bringing up a point for no reason. This is just getting out of hand.

thief3056d ago

Real numbers are rubbish
My fave games - which have been the most fun - Ratchet CIT, Uncharted 1/2, Mass Effect, KZ2, MAG
Combined sales? 15 odd millions, barely more than a Halo, GT, Mario, GTA. Should I have played instead some games with more sales numbers?

charlescox43056d ago

It's funny when people compare sales numbers, they magically leave out Mario because he beats them all.

nycredude3056d ago

It's funny how you refer to Mario like "he" is someone. Fucking guy is a sprite. The last Mario game I played is SMB2, and that will stay that way. Already grew out of that phase.

Redempteur3056d ago

playing games with great gameplay for all ages ??

corneliuscrust3056d ago (Edited 3056d ago )

The stage right before head-up-your-ass ignorance.

shadow27973056d ago

Mario 64 was awesome. I'm a big fan of 3D Mario, much more than 2D Mario. (Though, I admit, Mario 64 is the only one I've played, the Galaxy games look just as awesome though).

most milked franchise ever

http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...

sales =/= quality

TheBand1t3056d ago

With the exception of Sunshine, I've liked every mario release.

ceedubya93056d ago

But most of the Mario games have been good-great at least. Its a milked franchise, yeah, but people just can't get enough of Mario.

branchedout3056d ago

Milked franchises just means they over use it.

That says nothing about the quality of the game.

I for one, though Sunshine was stunning.

As... Pretty much every core (as in, mario, saving the princess jazz) mario game they've released.

Milked Franchises =/= Quality Franchises... Just most of the time.

DarkFinalGod3056d ago

true at some points but at least they make a good game once in while like MG2.i havent got it myself but the things ive seen, will at least make u entertain if u buy it.

silvacrest3056d ago

even if it was 1 mario game a year from 1980 till now that would be alot but jesus....thats alot of mario game

seinfan3056d ago

And the sad part about it is most of the Wiinis lickers are all in denial about it's milked status.

turok3056d ago

But at least most if not all the games are awesome. I have yet to have played a mario game that sucked.

If they pumped out 10 Halo and GT games a year, then they wuld do it to.

Calling out the Sony and MS fanbase for getting in a frenzy over sales...... and he's doing the same thing. SMH SMH.

His point would be more valid if this wasnt the 2nd Nintendo fanboy outlash. It would be more valid if the initial argument had anything to do with Nintendo. That would at least give the author SOME reason to feel the need to retaliate. It would be more valid if those 152 million mario sales werent spread across 152 different mario titles.

Can we please kill debate now?

topgeareasy3056d ago

sold 40.23 million copies alone lol

Altogether, the game has sold 40.24 million copies including Alternate versions Vs. Super Mario Bros, All Night Nippon Super Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros. Special, Super Mario All-Stars and Super Mario Bros. Deluxe

http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...

Sharingan_no_Kakashi3056d ago

I think the author meant ALL the Mario games.

topgeareasy3056d ago

you said Super Mario Bros on the NES sold 40.23 million copies alone

jonlynch3056d ago

Guinness World Records states the original alone sold 40 million plus.
