Why Giving Names to Gran Turismo 5's AI Drivers Is Genius

It seems like every other day there's a new Gran Turismo 5 video somewhere on the net. But the most recent one reveals something very interesting. All the AI drivers now have names. Now, that might not seem very important or revolutionary, but it opens up another avenue of gameplay previously missing from the series - rivalry.

It's no coincidence that some of the greatest racing games ever made have featured some kind of rivalry system. So here's how this feature could finally lift Gran Turismo 5 above its predecessors and make it the game it always threatened to be.

think about it like this....if GT5 does give the AI names, one possibility i could see occurring is each driver having distinct driving characteristics....just like in real two drivers are the same...what could happen is that there might be AI drivers in the game that are more risky, they take dangerous turns and chances to overtake their opponents being very aggressive, while there might be others who play it safe, take the corners slow and keep boxing out opponents who are behind them....if this were to happen i would be very excited, as if i already wasn't, it would only add another level of immersion to racing

We 4 Bubble people are awesome, the rest are lowlifes. Muhaha....

Yeh not a big deal IMO. AI drivers have had names in racing games for ages.

Off topic: That would be the first time I've come across someone with more than 3 bubbles and there I was thinking they'd capped it at 3.
I was also thinking capping to a low number was good since it means people will have to start thinking before commenting which would hopefully reduce the amount of crappy comments.

edit: Would you look at that. I got 4 too.

The Great Melon3056d ago (Edited 3056d ago )

Wow, I have barely commented since the site update, but my bubble count went up too. That was a pleasant surprise. Does anyone know how the new bubble system actually works?

PirateThom3056d ago

I believe it works in much the same way as the old one, it's just a lot more strict about increasing bubble count. Also, everyone seems to have updated at the same time... maybe they just changed the base starting number.

Ult iMate3056d ago (Edited 3056d ago )

I only recall the Road Rash games that had names of rivals.
Oh! And also NFS4 High Stakes, but I'm not sure...
And ofcourse F1 games.

Raf1k13056d ago

Pretty much all the recent Need for Speed games have names rivals as far as I can recall. The dirt games have named AI too as does Grid. I actually can't think of a modern racing game that doesn't have named AI drivers.

Ult iMate3056d ago (Edited 3056d ago )

Raf1k1, wow. Thanks for info. It seems I'm not into racing games much this gen.
(only have Wipeout Fury, Burnout Paradise, Ridge Racer 7, Midnight Club LA and MNR).

which AI your getting your ass handed by. thats my guess

AAACE53056d ago

Technically, it is a big deal!

Giving drivers names should immerse you in the experience even more! Think for a second. You are coming up behind a car, you are going to try to slingshot past him, but you recognize the name of that driver and remember he plays dirty. So you know to back off because he will spin you out. You can then go to another strategy.

I don't know if some of you remember the game 1080 Snowboarding or Excitebike 64 for N64? But they gave their characters names. Once you played it a bit, you kinda got to know how they raced. Like if you tried to pass Rob, he might try to bump into you or something. The AI for 64 games wasn't great, but it did keep you trying to beat that person and provided an experience that other games couldn't replicate.

Trust me, if they pull it off right, it will be a great addition to the GT universe!

DarkSpawnClone3056d ago (Edited 3056d ago )

JOLLY13056d ago

It was in Forza 2 and 3 and it felt like you were actually racing against particular drivers. When you'd see certain names on the grid you'd be more nervous.

mikepmcc3056d ago

Yeah, it was also present in Grid, where you could have a "nemesis" and hire and fire new drivers, which was quite nice.

UnSelf3056d ago

yea it was also in OutRun, but i believe the name of the other driver name was 'Timer' and if you lost to him, ull have to enter 50 cents to continue

fooltheman3056d ago

hmmm ps3 must be hard to programm for....6 months for names....0_0

ps. just joking, I only have a Ps3

Mcardle3056d ago

Whenever i play moto gp Pedrosa is always a thorn in my side, i don't know why him but he just winds me up..... adds to it.

Domer253056d ago

The whole series is genius IMO. At E3 this baby is going to shine.
