Alan Wake or Red Dead Redemption: A Guide to Choosing Which One Is Right for You

Two big titles are battling for your gamer dollars right now: Alan Wake and Red Dead Redemption. Which one is right for you depends on whether you prefer emergent or directed gameplay. But what do those terms mean, and how do you know where you stand?

I would choose scary over a sand box western

XxMajeSteRxX3065d ago

but i like rdr more soo hey wait a sec i have both!!

White-Sharingan3065d ago (Edited 3065d ago )

and I would choose a 30+ hour epic game over a 9 hour linear game

more bang for your buck

Karooo3065d ago

in hard difficulty, you should buy it man.

Greywulf3065d ago (Edited 3065d ago )

If you do every single thing there is to do, just for the sake of completing it, it is...

but thats not factored in the playtime.

15 hours..

In that case, rdr is 50+hours. so 50 still trumps 15 for you.

White-Sharingan3065d ago (Edited 3065d ago )

@kartik21- Oh, don't worry, I will buy Alan Wake, I only had money for one game at the moment and so I picked Red Dead Redemption [30+ hours, multiplayer (or how Greywulf puts it, 50+ hours), free co-op coming in June, expansions coming in the future] over Alan Wake. I'm almost able to buy Alan Wake, but not yet.

Arnon3065d ago (Edited 3065d ago )

Well, you would be right, if you actually played the game. With that being said, I have, and I can tell you that you have to beat it at least twice to complete everything, so that throws your entire comment out the window. Then there's:

100 Coffee Thermoses
106 Manuscript Pages (some only found in Nightmare mode)
16 T.V. Shows
30 Hidden Stashes
12 Pyramid Cans
14 Radio Stations
26 Signs

304 collectables

All of which (except for the thermoses and pyramid cans) contribute to the story. So no, there's over a good 30 hours of gameplay in this game. How do I know this? Well, I've already received 1000G from the game. Anyways, I bought both.

Do you want a flashlight or a lasso?

Nuff said.

SOAD3065d ago

Haha, neither of those is appealing.

koh3065d ago (Edited 3065d ago )

No way, the lasso has so much more potential. I managed to hogtie 5 people to the tracks at once. I guess I could've blinded them with the flashlight?

XxMajeSteRxX3064d ago

haha good one,but Alan Wake is awesome dude,it's not 15+ more like 10 i finished it,anyway if i have to invest in one ? RDR it is

JsonHenry3065d ago

I wish I had never bought RDR.

Eddie201013065d ago

I have both and Allen Wake does not even rank with Red Dead Redemption. Allen wake is too short, and if it weren't for the great lighting effects the graphics would be much less than spectacular. Allen Wake is a good game but is not a triple tittle like Red Dead Redemption is.

AAACE53065d ago

I wanted to get Alan Wake, but i've been interested in Red Dead way longer! Rockstar has a habit of making games I like to play. I never really liked Max Payne games, so I wasn't too sure about AW.

BulletBtweenUrEyes3065d ago

I've had my eye on getting Alan Wake since I first heard about it but over the past 2-3 months I have come to sorta fall in love wit RDR. Then I heard amazon was giving away a $20 gift card if you pre order RDR so that became the cherry on top as to which one I would be getting on may 18th, not to say I can't afford both but I've learned my lesson on spending all my money games when I have bills to pay. I'll get AW once it hits the bargain bin the game isn't going anywhere so....

wxer3065d ago

why would i waste my time with something midcore like AW ??

RDR all the way, its a better game after all

poopface13065d ago (Edited 3065d ago )

And they are both great.

NeoBasch3065d ago

If you like Heavy Rain or Lost, you should pick up Alan Wake. Trust me. You'll thank me later. It's so good! Easily one of the best games of the year and highly underrated.

Elimin83065d ago

It's RDR.. That game really surprised me. As for the ending and the way it led up to it...... Man oh man....

outrageous3065d ago

why does it have to be either or. Buy both if you like them. One is single player, the other is open world/multi-player.

bearsfaan3065d ago

Great article. I choose...both!

Moonboots3065d ago (Edited 3065d ago )

Me as well. I've beaten Alan Wake on Normal and going to try it next on Nightmare, plus there is the free DLC chapters coming. I am just overwhelmed by how much there is to do in RDR so much so I probably won't even finish it before I'm on to Crackdown 2.

Convas3065d ago

Alan Wake. Going to get it soon!

NeoBasch3065d ago

You will not be disappointed. Think Silent Hill. Now, imagine Lost. That's Alan Wake for 'ya. And let me tell you, it is hellaciously awesome. It has a really good story. So, if you're into that, you'll like this. Really good writing. Really good acting. Not much to be disappointed about. I'm incredibly excited for a sequel and future DLC. I wish more games took after Alan Wake. Nothing like a good serial. :D

Halochampian3065d ago

totally agree baschPS3... Im only halfway through it and im loving It. I love the story. I love the atmosphere. I'm loving about everything. I dont know how someone couldnt like it.

Its a great experience!

But I must say.. that I'm also about half way through RDR.. and im loving that also. It would be hard for me to chose one.. but if it came down to a great experience that i would probably remember.. Alan wake.

astar1234567893065d ago

sorry no flashlight for me!! love rdr

ZBlacktt3065d ago

Red Dead Redemption, on the other hand, offers 40-plus hours of gameplay with almost endless things to do.

also add free DLC in there as well here next month. Also look for RDR at the GOTY awards. You can bet on it.
