Firmware 1.90 Spotted on PS3: Background music option ?

The current buzz around the net is that a PS3 was spotted at E3 2007 running the next update Version 1.90. Rumor has it along with unconfirmed screen shot that there was an in game option to select music. At this moment its just around the forums and unconfirmed but it could very well be a possibilty. No official word from Sony. Fans will just have to wait and see.

hmmmm question to Xbox360 users out there. Can you play custom tracks if they are being streamed from you PC. Cause I currently stream all my music from my PC and I save my PS3 HDD for Games,Demos and trailers.

I don't own one...but my roommate has one...and you can stream stuff with that media center extension thing...sort of...from what I remember he could find the stuff on his PC HDD, then had to simply copy it to his 360...then play...but that could not be done while playing a game...the custom soundtracks was only for stuff on the local HDD...

could be wrong though...he hasn't had it hooked up in a while...not trying to start flaming...but it kind of isn't working...lucky for him though with that warranty stuff...

EDIT @below: cool...I guess he just didn't mess around with it long enough to figure it out...he was able to copy stuff without a problem...but couldn't just play it while streaming...I know he had XP, but have no idea what he was using to stream it...

I'm running Windows XP and have had no problems streaming my music to the 360 while playing games. The current version of Windows Media Player is one program that will stream your music. Another was Windows Media connect which I am not sure if it is used any longer, but you may be able to use that instead of WMP.

Yeah, you can. I stream all of my music from my pc WHILE I am playing games. I love my ps3, but this is seriously needed. Sports game soundtracks are HORRIBLE.

My cousin has a 360.
He had no idea the his 360 could stream music/video/pictures from his PC.
I schooled him, talked him into upgrading his PC (his old PC was too old for XP) and I set it up for him through WMP 11.

Neither did the 360 have this when it launched. Off the top of my head it took about 4 months for the 360 to get it. I hope the update comes tommorow along with Goddess of Heavenly Blade demo.

listening to music in games that's not with the game sounds dumb to me, but everybody loves it so it must be pretty good. hey man how are you streaming off your PC to your PS3? linux or can you do that in PS3 OS

There was a PS3 updated that added the "Media Server" option. All you need to have is your PS3 on the same network (meaning router or shared internet connection) as your home pc/laptop. Then you need either Itunes or Windows Media Player 11 or better. There is an option withing media player and Itunes to allow your music/photos/videos to be shared on the network. Select that and a few other simple steps and presto. Now you can stream all your media on your PC to your PS3 and watch/play it on your T.V.

Really cool feature. PM me if you need more detailed instructions.

I'm just going to assume you only own a PS3 so you havn't experienced music in the background yet. When/if the feature comes to you, you will see why Xbox fans love it so much and why it should be standard for "ALL" consoles. I will bet $100 that if this happens you will love it as much as anyone with ears.

This is a definite step in the right direction. Now if they can get it setup that you can access your friends list and msgs(Read and send) while playing games then I would be a lot happier. Nothing worse then getting a message and then having to wait until you finish to even read it.

i wont play with it on single player story games though.... they have ost for a reason... multiplayer i will use it though... hopefully noone gets annoyed by me playing someh anime music in their mics =)

my reasoning is, do you not listen to what's going on in the game when your playing it?? I could never play the Darkness with music playing, you couldn't hear when someone is talking to you. Now I could see it with some sports games or racing but still.

Not sure how this will work on the PS3, but for the 360 you hear all the voices, sound fx, etc it just replaces the ingame soundtrack. Very awesome feature! On the 360 the dev's are required to have it in every game, not sure if for the PS3 they will leave it up to the dev's if so you might end up with some games supporting it while others don't.

I'm still iffy about it. Sports games, fighting games, and puzzle games I can see it being cool for. But the bulk of what I play are action/adventure stuff, where the music's kind of important to the gameplay/atmosphere. And to be honest, I kind of like the music in the games anyways. But then again, I've never used this feature, and maybe it will change things for me. I've played 2k5 plenty of times with the music muted and the PC playing, so this is the same concept, I guess.

If Sony is indeed doing this, they HAVE tto get a playlist function added. It's bad enough trying to scroll through thousands of songs; doing so mid-game would be ridiculous.

This is then only update I ever really wanted. I don't care about friends list access and cross game invites or any of that. I just want to be able to play my own large collection of music over the game's music. All I can do know is cross my fingers and wait to see if it is true.
