“MY CONSOLE IS THE BEST!” How Fanboys Are Hurting Gamers

We’ve all been there. You are having an honest conversation with someone about the strengths of the various consoles. Maybe a friend has come to you for advice on which would be best for them, or you and your coworkers are talking about what you like and do not like about that. Suddenly someone steps up and says something that just makes you cringe.

“Yeah, but you don’t want to own a 360. Every single one of them is designed to break. You’ve heard of the Red Rings, right?”

Or maybe it’s “Yeah, but the PS3 is so hard to program for that all cross platform games play better on the 360!”

Hate to say it but it is opinion not fact. To you the 360 is the best so that I can understand you believing it to be fact. In all honesty when it comes to a personal preference it will ALWAYS be considered opinion.

As for myself, I too feel the 360 is more satisfying currently (notice i said "currently). I have a ps3 with gow 3 and mgs4 and a few others . I also have a wii with some of its big hitters. I "choose" to play the 360 mainly because I enjoys the games and the community it has.

I am not dissing the ps3 as I like its games too. It is MY CHOICE not anyone elses and therefore it is also MY OPINION not fact that the 360 is the better console to play. I didnt say better in the sense of power as the "FACT" is the ps3 has more power and is really showing it thanks to recent games like UC2.

Sometimes the best system to an individual isnt always the most powerful. When I had both the NES and master system, I played the nes more because I liked the games more. When I had the genesis and the snes I played the genesis more because I liked the games more.

PS3 is a great system. 360 is a great system. And I could even say the wii is a "fun" system (not so much great but simply fun). Those are opinionated statements but there is a fact to be seen. Playing games (any games) is fun and that should be what its all about.

A fact has nothing to do with being widely accepted. A fact is something that is true, whether the masses know that it is true or not makes no difference.

The problem I have with the system-wars is that the fans seem to think that they can turn a fact into an opinion by disagreeing with it; they can't. A fact is a fact even if no one believes it.

1. Facts
2. A false statement of fact. This is something that is not an opinion but simply misrepresents reality. For example, "The Xbox 360 has more systems sold than the Nintendo Wii has." That is not an opinion. No one is free to agree or disagree with it. The statement is just wrong.
3. Opinions - This is an idea someone has about something that can not be verified as factual or not.

I have a 360 and my brother has a PS3. I'm leaving in September because of my studies and none of the consoles are coming with me.
So I've been thinking seriously about buying another 360 when I move out or switching to the PS3 especially since the online is free.

For the moment I think I'll stick with the 360 simply because the games are better FOR ME. The exclusives on the 360 simply cater more TO ME than those on the PS3.

So far in 2010 for instance I prefer playing Mass Effect 2, Conviction and Alan Wake rather than Heavy Rain, GOW3 and MAG.

It comes down to PERSONAL taste and preference NOT what a group on the internet DECLARE as the irrefutable truth like the post 1.2

Well, this is possible, but still subjective. I can say though that as far as ONLINE is concerned, the 360 still offers the best experience...just not by much.

@Cold- Absoulutely nothing, and u know what..ur probably right. I know personally that I would rather play Left 4 Dead 2 over ANY exclusive shooter on the PS3...BUT, I would rather play Uncharted 2 over Gears 2.

In the end, Modern Warfare 2 was the best selling 360 game of 2009 and the best selling PS3 game of 2009. The majority of hardcore gamers out there obviously don't care about exclusivity, all they care about is playing fun games...so why can't we do the same and stop bitching about this?

Yes, in 2009 the PS3 DID have the most diverse games, however, what happened in the end. MW2(a multiplat thats more popular on the 360) STILL became the best selling game on the PS3. The PS3 does have the most diverse games, yet multiplats are selling more. What does this tell you.

oh i can say psn downloads fast than xbl but it all comes down to connection

the ps3 while its a stretch around actually wants you to go onto playstation home to make a party with people you dont know and just met rather than just youre friends

might not have cross game chat but when im playing a game im focusing on story and dialog as well as music and such when i was on xbl and used the function i found my self switching back and forth between in game chat and cross chat since those in game got annoyed at me when they couldnt talk to me

you can say more people on live but it doesnt really matter because even if there were only 2000 people per game on a network you would still not play with all those people even if you played all day

AC2 and GOW3 are both action-adventure games. There BOTH hack n' slashes and their BOTH platformers. WHAT???

Little Big Planet- The Play.Create.Share. genre isn't on the 360 YET. Therefore, its the best in its genre.

Demon Souls- Best exclusive game in its genre

Motorstorm- Best exclusive arcade racer. Forza 3 is definetly a better exclusive racer as far as the package is concerned, but I can't compare a sim to an arcade racer.

GOW3- As far as exclusives yeah, its the best hack n' slash

Heavy Rain- Best exclusive in cinematic storytelling.

M.A.G and Resistance- Halo trumps both on the FPS front.

FlaimbaitGod- The problem here is that(judging from sales and what people have bought) more people would rather play multiplats than exclusives. So, in a sense, u could make the case that the PS3 has the best exclusives, but these exclusives are in genres that the MAJORITY of people aren't interested in.

In the broad scheme of things now:

Bad Company 2/Halo 3 are the 2 best FPSs of this generation.

Split/Second is WAAAAYYYY better than Motorstorm as an arcade racer

As far as exclusive3D action adventures are concerned...the PS3 takes it! Hands down! However, like I said, AC2, as a multiplat, is better than GOW3 IMO.

Now THAT is a fact. Fanboys never hurt anything but feelings. The people that use the internet to become journalists, no matter how horrible, are the ones ruining things. Their reviews have been inaccurate and bias. Their articles have been nothing short of utter stupidity. Their need for unwarranted attention has been smothering. Of course, it isn't just the gaming media. The fact that I know more from a short glance at the MSN front page about Heidi Montag's boobs than President Obama asking for more money for Israel says a lot. The internet appointed media is plain horrible. Fanboys are just good entertainment. They're the only reason I pay attention to the comments. Fanboys provide income and reason for bias journalism. Who do you think the authors are trying to get hits from when they write those articles? The fanboys. If fanboyism wasn't so rampant, there wouldn't be a market for bias journalism. However because it is, bias journalism can actually generate sizable incomes for some. I live in Brooklyn and I converted my entire neighborhood into ps3 fanboys. we go around to parks and intimidate folks into pledging allegiance to sony. I believe we help the industry. Only people that are hurting are the 360 only fans who weve beaten into submission and those 360 only fans that we embarrass on n4g. It just so happens many of them are bloggers and fake writers who must now pretend to be gamers because all thier arguments have been found null and void.

If you have a PC that is capable of even running a 360/PC game on lowest graphics settings you still are not blocked out of all games on 360. I know many who do this just to avoid getting a 360.

360 is only made for gaming
wii is only made for people just getting into games

When someone says to me 'the 360 is better than the PS3' I feel like they just said 'There's no way man could have evolved from primates'.

I'm not saying the PS3 is definitely the best console in the world ever made blah blah blah... But look, these are the facts:

1. PS3 has 8 3.2GHz processors Xbox only has 3.

2. The US Air Force use PS3s these days (not Xbox 360s) because 2 PS3s amount to the same processing power as an $8,000 IBM processor. So I'm guessing the PS3's processors are superior.

3. (and this is the most important one) the games are SUBJECTIVE!!!

I would rather play Uncharted 2 than Gears of War 2, but a lot of people disagree. That's fine.

If you say the Xbox or the Wii is your FAVORITE console, that's fine.

But if you tell me the 360 or the Wii are BETTER than the PS3, you're talking about OBJECTIVITY, and so you might as well say an Elephant is bigger than a Blue Whale.

You are saying that the PS3 is a better console and saying anything else is an objective argument. By saying this you are defining the word better, as it refers to gaming consoles, as being more powerful hardware wise. That is completely false. Hardware specs don't make a console better than another console, especially when talking solely about the processor.

What about multiplayer service? I think it is safe to say that game popularity trends have shifted more towards multiplayer than single player. Assuming that the processing power of each system is pretty independent of their respective multiplayer network, saying that a console is better based on just their hardware specs doesn't make sense.

It would make more sense for you to say:

"But if you tell me the 360 or the Wii are MORE POWERFUL than the PS3, you're talking about OBJECTIVITY, and so you might as well say an Elephant is bigger than a Blue Whale."

1. The structure of a cell processor are different than a normal processor. The cell is not as powerful as a normal processor with 8 cores, however better than one with 3.

2. True, the PS3 have incredibly performance for the price, mainly because Sony looses money for ever console, and two PS3's is not near an 8000$ IBM cpu, more close to a 1500$ one.

Honestly, I'm a Sony fan(boy, caused they're attached to the hip), so I apologize if my examples attack the 360. Its only because I've been on the receiving end that I can come up 360 fanboy fodder. Ps3 fanboys can be just as terrible if not worse (attacking hardware failures, saying the 360 is only for shooters only [when its not], and even going as far as to say the 360 is inferior because it doesn't have blue-ray... which is retarded).

-Free online : what if you think XBL is better? Than it all boils down to if you would rather have a free service or a service YOU think is better.

-Home : I cannot take this point seriously. You are a fanboy if you are using Home as a reason that PS3 is better. What if I think that 360 is better because it has gameroom. Its my opinion.

-Any bluetooth headset: Its a fact that you can use any blue toothe headset, but what about the free headset you get with an xbox. So its your opinion that it would be better to be able to use any headset rather than get one included.

-Most innovative games: my opinion is that you are right, but that is it, its only an opinion. Im sure one person may think that Alan Wake is more innovative than any other game on the PS3. Who are you to say he is wrong?

The rest of yoru comments may be facts, but that doesn't make the PS3 a better system. IT may make it a more capable system, but by your thinking, I could say that the original xbox is better than the PS2, because it was definitely more capable.

I WOULD rather play my PS3, but I'm definitely not going to call someone a fanboy because he would rather play a system that doesn't have certain things on a partly fanboy biased list that I make up, when at the same time it has things that my system doesn't have.

yes I can there not,we evolve with small changes each change does not happen to the entire species.The most common factor would be the environment which they live,life tends to evolve to survive that environment (environment being not only the location but the climate,the other species both plant and animal).However you asked why there still here,truth is they took a different path they have evolved improving what was needed to survive.Which would mainly be there brain but also there muscular system.Again evolution is small changes that our then passed on to there children our not passed on because of death.We our still evolveing our self.Proff of this,more and more people are being born without there wisdom teeth because there no longer needed.Does not seem like much but as those children have kids and those kids have kids that have kids they slowly spread there genes around increasing the population of people without wisdom teeth.Jump 1000 years and the majority of the population will have never grown them.

Just reading a lot of the comments here in this very thread shows you how fanboys hurt gamers and gaming in general. Nobody's actually commenting on the article in question - they're (once again) justifying their consoles of choice. Just about EVERYTHING on this site (and others) eventually deteriorates into a discussion (read: p*ssing contest) of which console is best, or pixel counting, or Anti-Aliasing, or sales in different regions other than the one you live or basically anything else that really shouldn't matter but does to certain people who feel the need to argue about it on the Interwebs.

Personally I blame this generation's journalism. Specifically when these so-called journalists let their personal feelings dictate their objectivity of their work. In other words, it's the fanboy journalists at every level (from the mainstream to the obscure) that is ruining gaming.

Ill keep playing GOW3, Halo, MAG, Mass Effect, LBP, GEoW, MGSolid, Fable and a boat load of other games, because I bought both the systems and love them both I do buy multi plat games on the xbox first because I love Live but if a multi-plat game was cheaper on the ps3 or it offered more I would not hesitate to buy it.

Everybody who argues about what console is better or has more exclusive games "fanboys" we call them are just depriving themselves from good games from across the fence.

If you are a ps3 fanboy and have never enjoyed playing Halo than you have seriously missed out and if you are a 360 fanboy and have never played MGSolid than you have missed out on one of the best stories in a game to date.

I feel like this generation would have been alot more smooth if the PS3 folks weren't so damn vocal. Listen to everything gsme journalists go through these days if they don't give sony games all perfect 10s! It's borderline ridiculous.
