"Nintendo's online offerings are free (and somewhat limited) as of now, but that might not always be the case. According to statements from Shigeru Miyamoto to Edge, Nintendo is still considering the nature of its online business.
"Probably the other thing that we are desperate to realise is the core [online] business structure," Miyamoto said. "Do we need to demand customers pay monthly fees to enjoy online activities? Or give an online subscription that is free of charge, but then offer something extra for people that pay, so that they get some extra value? With these core business strategies I think we are less active than we should be."

The Wii was an interesting experiment that some struggled to make good games for, but many developers found ways to create Wii titles that are just as much fun to play now.
Now put this into context...
The main boss wants to go at apple which main success is the app store which only works online.
Then you have this statement... I think they should have used a serious focus for the translation rather than desperate but what ever.
The app store is drawing developers. It has almost became a 3rd development market if you see consoles as the second and PCs as the first.
Yet I can make a game on PC and on the apple platform with out paying royalty. More content makers will go here. Nintendo needs to find away to bbe more like this online universe that is apple and even steam on PC. The wii ware thing was nice but seriously you don't need a key pad lock on your house to make a PC game or a apple iphone game.
I think nintendo needs to focus on developers that have been pushed out of the gaming market. All the talk about making the online free or not is really misguided.
You have to make it valuable.... Friend codes are not the problem also yet nintendo doesn't offer very many sdk solution for free other than that one. Blast works to monster hunter does this very well.
I like how on the PC you can choose not to be part of it or not and still be connected in other games.
Nintendo needs a network that links into the wii channel, dsi ware and the future 3ds and nintendo next system.
Another thing is nintendo supports the redownloading of their games unlike the iphone set up. If you loose your song or app your screwed.
Another thing is most gamers like to be connected and like making network friends. I don't really like that as much as do many others. I don't like joining clans and all that crap. I don't want commitments LOL. I just want arcade game play and some challenge.
If nintendo does make a live type of account you wont find me using it unless it keeps stats. I done the whole gaming internet friends and it's sort of lame. It's a lot like AIM and it's spawns... I don't like to be interrupted to ask if I want to play a game.
Also talking while playing sucks it's so easy to turn that against a team.
Maybe they should do it for some gamers like MS and then leave all the other options for every one else. Every game should not be connected, developers are getting lazy and publishers like activison are milking people way too much.
if online play get pay-to-play i will get on it...
never liked MMORPG that make you pay for the game, and then pay more to play, this is ridiculous...
it would be really cool to see nintendo start a completely revamped online service. I'm not a huge online gamer but I know alot of people on the wii want a better setup. It really is necessary too in this day and age. More and more games are being focused on online MP rather than story driven single player, which is a shame imo.
