I played a bit on Dreamcast at a friends house years ago, great game.

omicron0095110d ago

you really needed a keyboard though since headphones were that popular back then.

Myze5110d ago

Yeah, I bought the keyboard, and it helped a lot at certain times when playing online.

I don't really remember what the name of the class was, but my main was the caster guy. Remember maxing him out, which I think was level 200...but it's been a really long time, may have been 100. Incredibly easy after a certain level range, even solo, but the game remained fun, especially since console online games were almost non-existent when the game was out, at least to the extent of PSO.

Actually bought Phantasy Star Portable not too long ago for my PSP. The controls for it are nowhere near as good as the Dreamcast controller, but overall it's a very similar game. I don't get the same feeling I got when I played PSO for the Dreamcast, but that's to be expected.

knifefight5110d ago

God bless you, Phantasy Star Online. My first experience with online gaming.

(Hoping for a stateside release of Phantasy Star Portable 2 for PSP!)

baraka0075110d ago

PSO is a great game. About 500 ppl still play the game on a few private servers. If you guys want more info check out www.schtserv.com
They have Dreamcast Gamecube and PC support.

HOSe5110d ago

The Sega Dreamcast was a system that had some really cool and innovative games. However, the console never had as much widespread appeal as the PS2 or Xbox.

I would play a seaman remake today. No doubt.

Longie_long783d ago

We encourage all gamers to enjoy playing with their seaman.

phoenixwing783d ago

I think outtrigger is really underrated as a game for the dreamcast. It was quite good for the time.

Shuckylad783d ago

If I could take two consoles with me into the after life it would be the Snes and dreamcast.

Jiub783d ago

I can get behind SNES, but Dreamcast? I'm not saying you're wrong, but I need an explanation

ApocalypseShadow783d ago (Edited 783d ago )

Dreamcast was like an arcade console in the home. As Sega produced many games and brought them over. Third parties released their arcade fighters on the console and they were arcade perfect or better like Soul Calibur. Back when games were about instant fun because they had to be to draw you in.

Every console we play today is more about length of a game and added side missions or fluff to lengthen the game than arcade as many of the games aren't arcade like. There are arcade like games there. Especially fighters. But these consoles don't have the same feel as an arcade company that made an arcade like machine. Dreamcast was the end of an era as most gamers play at home, most console games don't release in the arcade and multiplayer is through an online connection that kills that in person social gathering.

Gamers like myself that grew up on arcades, can tell the difference from popping tokens and nickels and quarters at arcades and just pressing start with a controller. Dreamcast had that feeling. It had a short life but it sure left an impression. Which is why I have two units to make sure. Because it's soul never dies(Soul Calibur)

ApocalypseShadow783d ago (Edited 783d ago )

I'm not sure if my explanation below fits why you like Dreamcast. But that's how I felt about it. Even today, there are no light gun games anymore. And today's TVs don't even support them. I have to keep a CRT TV just to keep light gun gaming alive.

And online is okay. But it's like playing poker in person compared to over the internet with a no name and no face opponent. The game is the same but you don't get the poker face looks, the body movement, the physical cards or chips. Dreamcast had that arcade feel and local, multiplayer fun.

Dreamcast is far and away my favorite console of all time.

If you like survival horror, i highly recommend D2. It’s really cool. Reminiscent of deadly premonition. Great atmosphere and music. Super campy and cheesy but unique. Just emulate it.

Resident Evil’s tossed its hat in a few different rings as well.

Fixed camera tank controls (Classic).
First person on rails (Chronicles).
Light gun (Survivor/Dead Aim).
Turn based strategy (Confidential Report)
Multiplayer PvP/PvE (Outbreak/Corps).
Third person shooter (RE6)
First person VR (RE7).

Wow this was a fantastic list I especially loved that you included Duke Nukem and the Oddworld series. Not many people these days Duke Nukem started off as a 2D Platformer before Duke Nukem 3D and I absolutely adore Strangers Wrath.

What do you need to know about Phantasy Star?

Man, Phantasy Star can be confusing. There are so many different kinds of games in this series, but they all get tossed under the same umbrella. The oldest games are turn-based RPGs. The newer ones vary between MMOs and action-RPGs. Wouldn’t it be nice if things were simplified...

Phantasy Star online episode 1 and 2 is one my all time favorites. Just make that better...

ApocalypseShadow2340d ago

What I need to know is when is Sega going to make and release Phantasy Star 5. All I need to know.

SegaGamer2340d ago

Even if they did, then i doubt it would be released outside of Asia. We haven't had a Phantasy Star game since Phantasy Star Portable 2, and that was 7 years ago !

I don't know why, but Sega seem's to have abandoned the west when it comes to Phantasy Star.

ApocalypseShadow2340d ago (Edited 2340d ago )

Pretty much. You would think that sequels to some of their franchises or remasters of games like Skies of Arcadia, Shenmue, Headhunter, Virtual On online, Jet Set Radio, etc would make them some easy cash as digital titles. Even VR titles of Virtual Cop, HofTD or even something crazy like Crazy Taxi VR. Nope. The Sega I knew just isn't there.

Maybe Sammy has them on a tight leash and just uses their assets for Pachinko games like Konami does. It's a shame being a Sega game fan but no Sega games to look forward to.

fenome2339d ago

Seriously though! When I first saw this I thought I missed an announcement or something. I thought it was to prep people up for the next game. Damn

Azurite2339d ago

"Phantasy Star Online 2 (GameCube, 2012)"
May want to change that to (PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Nintendo Switch, Android, PC and iOS, 2012)

I need to know when the fuck SEGA is gonna wake up and make a full on PSO 3 with the unreal 4 engine or some shit so I can get lost in the best god damn futuristic world with my pet mag as their god-tier PSO themed music blasts my ear drums forever and ever.

Wake the hell up SEGA, the time is NOW!
