An ominous void, barely a meter wide when it was first noticed, appeared over Antarctica. It grew with voracious tenacity to encompass hundreds of square kilometers as weeks passed, demolishing, or perhaps absorbing everything in its path. The United Nations dubbed the doomsday phenomenon, "Schwarzwelt," and mobilized a strike team of soldiers, scientists, and four, highly-advanced vehicles to break through the Schwarzweltz's perimeter and find a way to reverse the process. It was a haphazard plan at best, and a monumental disaster when all four ships were attacked and violently absorbed by the anomaly.

The mainline Shin Megami Tensei still has a ways to go before it becomes more accepted in the international market like its spinoff Persona series.

Fun Fact: This entire franchise is based off of a science fiction book. It's one of the most successful licensed properties in gaming

Yeah, finding out about MT's origins was interesting.

And agreed that SMT is lagging behind in terms of western popularity. It's a lot harder a sell than Persona, that's for sure.

Persona is just a more accessible franchise to get into than the mainline SMT in terms of difficulty, premise, and tonality.

Persona was meant to have a more wider appeal and was designed to feel more familiar and relateable to the audience as opposed to the more fantastical and philosophical aspects of the mainline series.

BT writes: This week brings us the release of Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers on the 3DS, the re-release of one of the only two games from the prolific franchise to grace the Sega Saturn. The game is notable not only for coming out on the Saturn, but for its role in the franchise. You see, the game was initially released on the Saturn on the tenth anniversary of the entire Megami Tensei franchise (1997) and the game took full advantage of this, putting in plenty of old monsters from past games including everyone’s favorite female chariot-riding phallic symbol, Mara. The game also was easier than other titles, allowing new players to have some breathing room before the game crushed their souls.
