Zune HD hacked, as well as previous Zune models

Until recently, writing applications for the Zune meant one thing: XNA. While the XNA game development platform aims to provide a framework that makes game development accessible to the masses, on the Zune this translates to no 3D, no Internet access, and a performance penalty of around an order of magnitude - all when the hardware is right there.

That's about to change. Through the work of myself as well as Netrix, Nurta, and the rest of the ZuneBoards Development Front, all Zune models, including the Zune HD, have been hacked. The first true hack available for the Zune, this makes it possible to, for the first time, run applications directly on top of the Zune firmware, with full access to everything XNA withheld before. The limitations of XNA are now no limitations at all.

recently upgraded from an original 30Gb zune and I love it. Not a bad device at all.

I've been meaning to get the HD, but haven't got around to it yet. I got an Ipod touch cause I wanted one bad, but we really don't use it much. I plan on getting the KIN phone as well! I wanted the iphone bad, but the ipod kinda turned me off from it.

To those who had the 30 Gb and upgraded to the HD, is it worth it? I'm being serious because i'm still thinking of upgrading. Also, tell me if you ran into any issues... Thanks in advance!

For me the Zune HD was a good purchase. It seems to have a better battery life than my old 30Gb. Plus it's smaller and lighter. It has a few apps for it, but the good thing is that all my accessories like car charger/sync cable from the old one works with the HD.

I would suggest that you go to a store where there's one on display and look at it.

The ZuneHD is awesome, your best bet is to read ZuneHD reviews, most if not all say its an very impressive device. I love mines, the image Quality is really good, and as for issues i haven't had any, and i think you can connect you zuneHD account with your 360.

Is this an actual hack or is it just a wrapper?

Are these games going to be allowed on the Zune MarketPlace (only way for this to be really viable for developers)?

Might Microsoft just consider adding access to this anyway as it seems like it's not negative and that would help prevent legitimate hacking that could ruin user's devices?

I thought XNA let you use direct3d. Is that only on PC/360 games? I know the Zune HD has an OpenGl and Direct3d enabled chip on it.

So many questions D:

The Zune HD will not let 3rd party dev's use all the features of XNA, so no 3D access, this will also let us make games that can be online, also people are working on a app store so that dev's will support this and make money.

The Lazy One3103d ago

I highly doubt M$ won't open their marketplace soon. They won't be able to compete with Apple's app store or the android marketplace if they don't.

I'm pretty sure they even announced this was going to happen with Windows Phone 7. Seems like a futile effort making a marketplace for the Zune right now.

Who said Hackers were bad, this is awesome.

JasonXE3104d ago

Hopefully they can make a web browser and similar apps for us old 30gb owners.

wwm0nkey3104d ago

Someone is working on that right now, and also working on some emulators for ZHD like NES and SNES.

@ jamesgtaiv

I own the original 30gb, and the 32gb HD, as well as more people who do not want to be like everyone else and own an ipod

jamesgtaiv3104d ago

Ipods are the gayest thing since the village people but Ive never known anyone with a zune.

I have 2 Zunes and I use them for music and videos. I have a cell phone for apps, but congratulations to those hackers. Now go and make some apps for free. Love people that like to give their hard earn time and effort away for free. So go boys make some free stuff for Zune owners.
