WTF is wrong, look at the muddy textures, look at the mountain's base on the right ewwww. Look at the character model so blurry (look at the waxed hair).

The only thing great looking is the lighting. No wonder they are using night scenes to mask the textures.

Whether ur right or wrong, I question why ur so desperate to point out its flaws? To me the game looks great. As Alpha Male said, what notable source ever said Alan Wake was set to be the best looking console game?? Its a shame really, while we're all anticipating what will likely be an awesome game....ur stuck pixel counting.

I don't ever remember it being called that, nor should it be.

The car textures on that second link do look really bland. These shots do look less than what I expected, but I think the game looks fine overall. I'm also not 100% sure if I should trust those screens, but I've never properly looked at AW anyway. Graphics I find are always the shallowest way to judge a game. It's not as if AW looks horrible, nor does it look like God of War 3, and quite honestly it doesn't have to. I ultimately care about gameplay. Though this is being hyped to look great, so if it fails then it fails, but I think AW looks just fine.

Oh come off it. It does not look that bad. I'll agree it's not the best looking game ever, probably not even the best looking game on the 360, but it looks pretty damn good and you know it. I think we've all seen much better shots from Alan Wake in the past though, so I don't know that I'd jump to any conclusions based on these.

I wouldn't say they were "Amazing" at all.

But I do like the art style to the graphics, the game still looks good.

Plus, I'm guessing most of the game/action takes place at night, so the textures etc will be mostly hidden.

The only thing is, every video/screenshot seems to be all the same, there isn't much variety in environments at all!

Its still a bunch of shots we have seen from areas many times now. It should be a fine looking title, if a little brown again in places. This generation developers have really excelled themselves redefining the meaning of high definition brown so hopefully alan wake has many areas of non brown-ness which would suit me just fine

i know people that think Halo3 has no match in the graphics department for their own tastes, and that is all right. there are many games that are great looking and top of the line experiences without showing the best technical graphics around. I think AW is one of those games where the sum of its parts delivers the goods and that may well be one of the best 2010 games, just like ME2 does with its ok visuals.
Not every game can push the technical boundaries, and for many reasons. For the graphics whores, go to Uncharted 1 and 2, GoW3, Heavy Rain, Crysis on PC. i wont mention any 360 title because i honestly dont think there is any 360 game that deserves to be touted as graphics king (gears 2? nah)
I see that Remedy is doing a very good job with AW, and for me as a gamer i can only hope for AW to be awesome and keep the awesome games coming.

God of War 3s water looks nice in screenshots, but when you play the game youll notice that the water is not dynamic and has no interaction with the player AT ALL. that was one thing that shocked me in God of War 3, as God of War 2 and even God of War 1 both featured dynamic water. how they could not do it for God of War 3 is quite puzzling.

Im not sure if Alan wakes water is dynamic or not, but that question only comes up if you can even get in the water. static water is fine for un-playable areas, like they appear to be in Alan Wake. not so good when you actually swim around in them like in GOW3.

Alan Wake looks AMAZING in action, and thats all that matters. i dont care if it doesnt look that great in screenshots. uncharted 1 looked great in screenshots, but then you play it and every 3rd frame is torn and the framerate is all over the place......id rather it be good looking in motion than in stills.

And Anti-aliasing doesn't seem to affect all surfaces.

My favorite Survival Horror game this gen was SH: Shattered Memories, a Wii game. It goes to prove that graphics are not necessary to create an engaging experience. Also the graphics look pretty nice, the AA is a good touch. Even if at lower resolutions AA can give a blurry look.

You guys need to stop arguing about freaking pixel counts. If you want the best graphics get a gaming PC. If you want the most diverse games library get the consoles. I happen to have all of those and can say graphics don't matter that much for me on consoles because no matter what they will never live up to the technical feats of a PC. That doesn't mean I enjoy them less, just like Im sure AW won't be bad just because it can't push as many pixels as say GoW3.

I think I was overly excited that this game would look exceptional but I think that may have been a premature perception based on the fact that there are few and far 360 exclusives (IE NOT ON PS3) that have come out.

I don't think this game is going to wow anyone on graphics but that also kinda concerns me about the gameplay making up for the shortfalls of the visual presentation.

I'll wait and see what the reviews are like but it might just end up being one of those games I will pickup when I have extra cash to burn on a rainy day (Maybe if it ends up 25% off somewhere too)

Here's a fact people: Halo3 engine sacrificed resolution to enable much deeper lighting. If this game has dropped resolution it's so they can make the graphics *better* by having more depth to the images rather than more pixels on the screen which is catered for by scaling anyway.

I'm guessing it's because of the screen capture tool used or something else, but those screenshots don't make the game look very good. Lots of jaggies, lots of blurring around the edges, very muddy textures, etc.

Sorry fellas, but Nathan is right...funny he has one bubble despite having a 2-1 agree-disagree ratio on his post.

It is clear now how they approached this game to pull it off on the 360: they muddied up the textures on certain objects, especially items in the distance. Everything looks like they put vaseline on a camera lens...call it the "Barbara Walters" effect.

I mean, sure, it looks very good. But it isn't even remotely close to the bullshots they've been feeding us for the last couple of years. To those saying "so what?", well, the article calls them "amazing", so that's why people are jumping on it. Pretty, yes. Amazing, no.

I'll still give it a fair chance though. Any big-hype game that isn't another FPS deserves special attention.

The people who are talking down this games graphics aren't talking to the people who care about gameplay, they're talking to the Xbox fans who said that this game was going to have the best graphics on a console. Many of the people who said this are now denying they ever said it, but they said it time and again, and they said that it would specifically be better than uncharted 2. Even when the only shots of the game we saw were the doctored shots, that wasn't true, but clearly these people had never seen UC2 so they didn't know what they were saying.

Unfortunately, it's come time for a reckoning, and considering that even some of the most vehement supporters of this game's graphics have changed their tunes, I'd say the Xbox fans were wrong, and PS3 fans were right. All the PS3 guys want is an admission, and a little more humbleness in the future. Sure, AW may have the best gameplay ever, but it's doesn't have the best graphics. Xbox fans wouldn't have to eat their words if they wouldn't say this every single time an Xbox exclusive is announced.

I think Alan Wake looks great regardless of the resolution it runs on. If you guys are feeling too jaded about this, then take comfort in the notion that the sequel might be developed for the next Xbox console, and thus there will be a major graphical leap, hopefully.

Personally, my major gripe with the game is Alan Wake's internal monologue being the narration of the game. I find it very annoying. And the game is really linear.

Its a trick they are using because the game is only 547p. Even though with my eyes I see a good looking game, in my mind I have to keep reminding myself that its some kind of trickery on my screen. But when it comes to the character detail its like they are hiding sooo much w/ the insane amount of blurr and you can see the jaggies everywhere. I think in action games character detail is 1 of the most important things since thats what you are looking at throughout the entire game. After playing Uncharted than GoW3 character detail really sticks out for me in action game. I playing FF13 now and man it hurts my eyes on the ps3 version at the jaggies and lack of detail when running.

Killzone 2 has horrible texture work, low-polygon character models, and poor anti-aliasing - but it hides most of that with very impressive, but not realistic, lighting. can anyone tell me the last time you looked up towards the sky and saw lens flares? cause every time you do it in Killzone 2 you get lens flares all over the place.

KZ2 has above average texture work all you have to do is look at the character models and certain parts of levels. To even mention KZ2 as average is really really seeing the fanboy in YOU. There is NO other game that does 32 players online with all the explosions, particles, etc. And the skies in KZ2 are freakin beautiful, better than Uncharted 2 expecially in places like Blood Gracht. Sure some things are definitely low poly but you have to remember we are going to be seeing KZ3 soon. All these lies about wake have nothing to do with it. And why are you comparing a game where basically all you have is scenery vs a frantic and confined FPS?

This game looks amazing in motion. One of the better looking games I've seen in a while. With that being said:

These screenshots suck. In fact, 99% of the Alan Wake shots I've seen were half bloom, half blur. It's really hard to tell how good the game looks by judging from these screenshots.

I'm patiently waiting for this game, it's going to really good by the looks of it.

I can't wait for this title, I've been waiting five years for it (I'm still disappointed that is not coming to the PC) but lets be honest, those screenshots were not that impressive. It really didn't show anything, now that being said, I'm still getting Alan Wake regardless, but you 360 kids need to grow up and stop putting this game on some graphical pedestal.

So what if it's tricks under the hood , as long as it indeed looks good ? if you want raw power just go over the pc , they'll have plenty , yet without that many games as well designed and as artistic as a very few exclusive consoles games or multiplatform such as Mass effect 2 .

Mass effect 2 ran unto what i still believe to be the curse and plague of next gen gaming , UE3 engine , and yet bioware made it absolutely stunning looking

See , i dont care if , say crysis or upcoming FPS XX , got better explosion , better faces , and more realistic vegetation ... it doesnt show me even one part moving as dynamically as having a whole stone giant climbing an even bigger mountain , while under fire , and while you fight sea monsters , in something pretty much akin to painted canvas (gow3 for those not guessing yet) ...
The most creativity i see with such raw power is unfortunately always confined to tech demos or amateur mods .

Nor do most pc games try , as hard as alan wake to cleverly play with lighting effects as a gameplay and atmospheric experience (but to be fair it was once a pc game too) . The most recent example would probably be Doom 3 , eons ago , unless someone remember something else .

Right now , the games i see in pc with the most artistic work , and the best designs seems to be a few mmos , blizzard games , and the witcher 2 . Most of them hardly the most demanding games hardware wise .

Even with its supposed technical limitations , such as sub-hd resolution , you gotta admit it looks pretty good .

Am I the only one who doesn't care much for graphics? The graphics look fine to me. So what if it doesn't look like Uncharted 2 or Killzone 2, it still could be a better game than those two. Look at GTA IV for example. That game looks worse than UC2 and KZ2 but yet it is a much better game imo than any PS3 or 360 exclusive. Just look at its 98 average on meta-critic. People take graphics too seriously when it is gameplay that really matters. I like the concept of Alan Wake and I think it will be a really enjoyable game. FF7 is arguably the best game ever made. What great graphics did that have? None but it had a billion times more depth and intellectual quality than UC2, KZ2, Gears 2 and Mass Effect 2 put together. People need to start looking at more films if they're really interested in graphics or start looking at what real gamers look at, gameplay. I'd prefer GTA or a sandbox game any day over a linear game with life-like graphics. Hence the reason GTA IV is by far the best game this generation. Some people are just too stupid and shallow to look beyond graphics. They have my pity.

In regards to FF7, I retract my statement. I didn't say what I had intended to. I'm not talking about how it looked back then. I'm simply saying that FF7 is still more enjoyable today than Uncharted 2, even though it is by far graphically inferior. In regards to GTA IV. I think you ought to look at some reviews on the game. It has a 98 score on metacritic, which is higher than UC2 or any PS3 or Xbox 360 exclusive and I personally love, as do many others. As I said previously, some people just haven't the intellect to perform proper evaluations on games and these are the same people who have fanboy glasses glued to their faces.

I can agree that AW looks great in motion and the screens dont do the game justice but to say uncharted and god of war 3 look good on screens but dont look as good in motion is complete BS. Uncharted 1 & 2 & God of War 3 look better in motion. Heres a few screens of god of war 3 & uncharted 2. Both games dont only look amazing, they also are amazingly fun.

i dont think you understood my post correctly RE: god of war 3.

i know the game looks amazing in both motion and screenshots - most of the time its the best looking console game to date. what i was talking about in god of war 3 was the water, specifically when you fall into the river styxx. go back and play the game again (not that i should have to give you another reason to, im already on my 3rd play through) and get to the water when you first go to hell and lose all your life/magic. note how there is NO interaction between Kratos and the water. it doesnt splash off him, it doesnt move around him, he doesnt send ripples out when he moves.

and as an aside, the Kratos character model in GOW3 is just absolutely breathtaking. it is without doubt the best playable character model ive ever seen in any game. and whats especially good about it is that it shows that polygon count has virtually NOTHING to do with how good a character model looks - Kratos is made up of about 20 000 polygons (from developers themselves) whereas Drake from U2 is made up of over 35 000 polygons (again, from developers). there is NO doubt that Kratos looks better than Drake in every conceivable way.

Kratos has absolutely no effect on the water, thats why they are able to make the water look so beautiful by itself. its like the difference between a pre-rendered image and an in-game one - the pre-rendered can be made to look so much better because it will only ever be seen how the developer wants it to be seen, the player cant interact with it.

my comments for Uncharted were NOT about Uncharted 2 btw - they were specifically about Uncharted 1, like i said. and yes, i agree, Uncharted 1 does look good in motion - but it looks MUCH better in screenshots because aliasing (more specifically the shimmering effect caused by aliasing when moving) is less pronounced, there is NO framerate, and there is NO screen tearing in a screenshot.

just to re-iterate - i was NOT saying that God of War 3 or Uncharted 1 (or 2 for that matter) look BAD. i was simply saying that God of War 3 doesnt have dynamic water, and that Uncharted 1 looks much better in screenshots because its graphical problems are things that only rear their heads while the game is in motion.

as far as my previous post goes, I ALSO stated that the game will most likely play great and in the end, graphics aren't everything. not to mention the fact that Remedy makes good games.

They been working on alan wake for 5 freaking years and you are telling me thats the best they can do I am very disappointed. If developers are taken that long to produce them ok graphics then there wont never be a 360 game that will rival uncharted, heavy rain, gow3.

This game looks good enough so now the more important thing is whether the story and action are well designed.

By good enough graphics, I mean they don't distract by their poor nature. While these are not as great graphics as many PS3 exclusives, they pass that invisible barrier to be called great.

For example, I would not have minded a COD 2 with COD 1 graphics as long as the story was great! The gameplay and graphics of COD1 pass that good graphics barrier too!

We are heading into a time of diminishing returns as far as graphics are concerned as the developers will need insanely more powerful computers to make incremental improvements in graphics. The new focus with future consoles will be story and gameplay mechanics, e.g. fully interactive worlds.

You are right, I noticed that the interaction with water in GOD3 wasnt that great, if barely there at all.
But Uncharted 1&2 is a different story and looks 5 X better when seen in motion and interacting with it.

I compared that screen from Alan Wake to the one from GOD3 because you can tell in AW you are not going to be swimming etc in that water, maybe going past on a boat with spray effects but for the most part it will be there for visual purposes (like in Resistance 2).

ok ill explain again - for Uncharted, and i never mentioned uncharted 2 originally either, i was not talking about water or how it interacts. i was only talking about how the game looked better in screenshots because screenshots arent affected by framerate, screen-tearing, and to a lesser degree aliasing (depending on how touched up the screenshots are, andNaughty Dog are well known to add large amounts of AA to official screenshots in order to make them look better).

wasnt talking about water at all in regards to uncharted 1, and didnt even mention uncharted 2.
