Atari, NES--man, those were some great games. Well, that's how Amy Nelson at Goozer Nation remembered them anyway. Boy, did we think those games were awesome when we were kids, so how bad could they be?
I think retro games are sweet, they have a specialness to them. This guy is just WHACK.
this article sucks
Retro games is a big reason why games today exist. Some retro games I put way over what we have today
this article is one of the most pathetic I've ever seen don't look at the graphics so much (which were awesome for its time by the way) and look at the gameplay, Mario games poo on most of the platformers made today, lol
i love a bit of retro action its like shagging an older woman, its really good frantic fun but she's a hard biatch that will punish you for your mistakes...
And playing some of the retro games helps us do that. Just because they are not as awesome in some ways as the games today, they still have their own flare and have added much to the gaming world. We cannot forget those games and for those of us who grew up with them, we will more than likely be the last to truly appreciate them for what they are and what they were then.
Retro games have something that most games today lack, a challenge. Edit: If I felt like it, I could hook up my NES right now and play The Legend of Zelda for hours. It's a pretty addicting game lol.
Zelda Link to the Past Chrono Trigger Final Fantasy 3/6 Mario 3 Ninja Gaiden 2 I could go on
"Atari, NES--man, those were some great games." Don't they mean consoles? Wasn't aware there was a game called 'Atari' or 'NES'.
We wouldn't have todays games. Plus like logichurtsfanboys said, they were challenging. Todays games are WHEN you beat them, not IF you can beat them like the old ones.
yeah that was mostly the case back in the days, even if you did make it all the way to the end, you still have to fight the impossible boss or some other ridiculous challenge :P
First off, three words. Cathode Ray Tube. Not only is she just plain wrong on the graphics (of course an HD TV is going to make your old games look bad, the systems were not made for an HD TV! They'll look awful on one! That's why stuff is upscaled in the emulation scene such as VC or PS Store), but she's missing the point. It's all about the game's mechanics, rule set, simplicity or level of complexity, level of human ingenuity put into it (or "gameplay"). It's all about the minds behind the games and how those games affect the mind of the player, not just how spiffy something looks. In fact, Amy is missing that point altogether, whether concerning retro or current-gen games. Nowhere near qualified to reach a big-time site. This is why Goozer Nation blogs do NOT COUNT AS NEWS. This isn't Stupid4Gamers. Stop approving this.
Sigh.... Retro gaming is like going to a museum. Its like reading a history book. This is where our mass effects, our halo's, our drake's, our god of war's have come from. For every generation of retro gaming since pong you play, you will see the steady progress of innovation. From the beginnings of our Dune 2's to our Wolfenstein's, and all the way back to Excitebike, Shinobi, and our Sierra Quest games, where would our games today be now if it weren't for them? Sure it won't be as memorable as when you were young. But how many people listen to 1930-40's music? The fact is they were all pioneers! I bet half of the gaming population today wouldn't even be able to get through the first level of contra without the aid of the 30 lives cheat! (Come to think of it... I seem to recall playing it awhile back, and boy did i suck too, makes me wonder how pro I was back then as an eleven year old).
I agree with your analogy, retro gaming is like going to a museum. I like to look at old things, reminisce fondly about it if I was alive back then or ponder how it allowed current products, and then I go back to my real current life. For example I can admire an early model car but I have no desire to go and drive one today. The same with retro games, I can look and reminisce about them, but I never got into the nostalgia craze of spending time (and money) replaying them; I rather stay in present time and play all these awesome modern games we have.
Damn, could've sworn I enjoyed every minute of completing every Megaman game from 1 to X to Zero to ZX last year... And that Castlevania kick a few months ago, I thought that was awesome. Even now I'm on my second play-through of Final Fantasy VI (first time since I knew it as FFIII). But I guess I should stop, because apparently it sucks.
I can't tell, if it's not then this article is lame. On a side note, what is really surprising is that "retro games" from the Atari, NES, SNES and Genesis have aged a million times better than the first generation of 3-d games of the playstation, saturn and n64.
They really need to stop approving these POS "articles".
The angry video game nerd will probably show up at your house soon to "rectify" the problem with a soft cuddly butt kicking. : )
There are certain games I still bust out and play today. I'm currently in the middle of playing Final Fantasy VI for the 20th+ time. I still break out my Genesis every so often and play through The Immortal. And for NES, I play Ninja Gaiden, Zelda and a few others. Those games are still as much fun now, as they were back then for me, maybe even more fun, since I'm better at them now. If you can't stand retro games because of the graphics... Well, I think that says a lot about what makes a game enjoyable to you.
Retro games are like the foundations of music, you take the foundation out and everything falls apart, each generation has built upon the last to create a tower, the tower has to have a strong foundation or it will fall over, the foundation might not be pretty, but the people who made it had a passion for it, and that's what matters. Not great graphics, I play some of the great titles I never have played on emulators and find them fun, people today are too picky about graphics.
Old games don't look as good as new games?! Really? My world is crushed.
Play with your next gen things... :) I'll stick with retro, becouse those games can be played time and time again :) yes, I know there are some good games in our gen, but not as much as retro's.. :)
So what you're saying is that retro games suck because you decided to play them upscaled 10 times over? You're supposed to play it on a standard, lo-def telivision, derp.
