Labor group: Chinese teens 'like prisoners' in Microsoft tech factory

Thousands of Chinese teens and young adults work 15 hours a day at 65 cents per hour, prohibited from talking or listening to music, in abysmal conditions at the KYE Systems factory where they assemble Microsoft hardware that is exported to the United States, Europe and Japan.

So reports the National Labor Committee, which on Tuesday released the culmination of three years of incognito interviews and photography inside the infamous Dongguan, China, gadget factories. Though Microsoft is not the only company to outsource manufacturing to KYE, it accounts for about 30 percent of the factory's work, the NLC said.

Nah prisoners get free room and board.

Simon_Brezhnev3205d ago

lmao i know its not funny but your comment is

Parapraxis3205d ago (Edited 3205d ago )

Actually a lot of factories provide "housing" (cramped 6' x 10 ' shared rooms or similar) for their employees, but if the employee does not want to live there, it is still taken out of their wages... pretty messed up huh. =/

AEtherbane3205d ago

I'm Not surprised, M$ and there $$ will always cut to get more of a profit.

Foxgod3205d ago (Edited 3205d ago )

Really, then why did they spend 2 billion by extending the warranty, something they didnt have to.

If MS would Abuse chinese people, then they wouldnt have spend 2 billion either.
Its the chinese gov who abuses chinese people.

Blaze9293205d ago (Edited 3205d ago )

Of course a fanboy like you completely misses the serious problem at hand and turns it into some kind of fanboy war.

This has nothing to do with Microsoft but the factory agencies in China. Do we need to bring Foxconn and the man who committed suicide into this discussion as well?

As @Foxgod said below, now they blame MS for it, instead of China. But he's wrong in that aspect as well as no one is blaming Microsoft, just these fail ass journalists getting it wrong. This is NOT Microsoft's Chinese Workforce - KYE Factory in China Produces for Microsoft 'and' 'other U.S. Companies'. Microsoft is just a 'client' for KYE Factory.

Is Foxconn Apple's factory? No. So instead of throwing stupid fanboy antics, realize the serious issue at hand and that's the Chinese Government. This isn't a laughing matter or something to joke around with. No one deserves to live like that

PirateThom3205d ago (Edited 3205d ago )

A class action law suit and a recall would have cost more than $2b.

Microsoft didn't do it out of the goodness of their heart, they did it because the alternative was so much worse financially and the press would be even more damning.

Foxgod3205d ago

Why dont you come with numbers to backup that bold statement that it would have cost them more.
Assumptions are worth nothing.

bjornbear3205d ago

- on topic -

yeah this is bad =/ but so many Chinese workers get abused its unfair to pin it just to MS, however they should do something about it

Google did, for different reasons, but they did

r0s3b0wl233205d ago (Edited 3205d ago )

its amazing how everyone feels entitled to stuff these days. where is personal responsibility? they should have thought of this before they over populated or accepted communism. i guess they rather starve to death thanks to their own government rather than work for evilll corporations.

why do the successful always have to pay for other peoples failures? and if their conditions are so poor, why do they keep haing babies? this is true all over the world: africa, haiti, etc. and then hippies convince or even force everyone else to pay for the negligence of others. ridiculous fantasy world we live in.

Fishy Fingers3205d ago

Hilarious, Fox you think MS extended their warranty out of kindness? It was down to the reasons Thom has listed, it's common sense... to those without a jaded outlook.

XabiTheHumble3205d ago

So a massive recall wouldn't be more financially devastating then 2 billion dollars? I always knew you bots dribbled at the mouth.

Bathyj3205d ago (Edited 3205d ago )

OMG Foxgod, are you for real? Uhm yes they did have to. They extended it twice remember. From 3 months to a year, and when that bandaid didnt work, 3years was enough to shut people up.

Whats $2B compared to recalling 10M (at that time) consoles at 400 bucks each?
Thats $4B right there before the lawsuits even come in. M$ bought you cheap and you're so oblivious you praise them for it.

You want to live in Wonderland, go ahead, but dont piss in my pocket and tell me its raining.

Foxgod3205d ago

Why would there be a recall for consoles that expired the warranty.
Theres a warranty for a reason, and the length of it is defined by law.
MS cant be held responsible for consoles that break after the warranty period.
That MS extended it to help out people with RROD, was a way for MS to make up with their fanbase.

And again, come with numbers, assumptions mean nothing without proof.

HolyOrangeCows3205d ago (Edited 3205d ago )

He seriously needs to provide proof that the recall of millions of $400 products, redesign, and recreation and reconstitution of millions of (probably more so than before) expensive products would cost more?

I think we all well know that the blame is shared by both Ms and the Chinese government.

Elven63205d ago (Edited 3205d ago )

AEtherbane: Companies like Nintendo, Sony, Apple, etc use Foxconn, the company that constantly comes under fire for killing workers, bad employment practices, etc. Many companies especially in the gaming industry use cheap labor in Asia, it's ridiculous to say Microsoft is the only one.

Edit: Foxgod, recalls generally cost a lot of money since you have to advertise the recall, have people on hand to take care of the recall, build new products, etc.

In 2005 Microsoft needed to recall power cords on some Xbox products, I don't think they ever released a figure but surely they would have known how complex it is.

Government Cheese3205d ago

Love how people are blaming Microsoft for this and not the real problem, China.

XxZxX3205d ago (Edited 3205d ago )

hey fox, now you know where the $2 billions coming from. SLAVERY.

Problem is not china, but Globalization. With Globalization, it allows the strong country to exploit those poor countries. Just think of this, who's going to do all the dirty works for cheap. If none of people in this country, then we need to shift the problems to those poor country. Let them do all the works while we enjoy our life. So be thankful for those people. In order for you to sit around and go to Walmart and buy those great stuff and foods for cheap, there are someone else on the other side of this world work their *ss off in order for you to enjoy your life. Be thankful to those people, not god or superior being. It's them who do all the work for you.

FragGen3205d ago

We're ALL douchebags for supporting Chinese virtual slave labor. There's not a single person on here who hasn't contributed money to this system and thereby implicitly supported it.

AEtherbane3205d ago (Edited 3205d ago )

>_> fanboy? Please...
I guess my comment was misleading, im not insinuating that MS is the only company, but it is a fact that they will do thing to save on money, even at the expense of others' lives, i am NOT claiming other companies do the same, please tell me, where did i say MS was th only one? I didn't. So dont pull that on me.

JsonHenry3205d ago

Unless your stuff is made in Taiwan, every where else in that country is the EXACT same no matter what company it is. How do you think the Chinese make things so competitively priced to other countries? They condone this sort of thing to keep their manufacturing and exports high.

IdleLeeSiuLung3205d ago

This is similar to the industrial revolution until unions sprung up and government started mandating laws.

We all want affordable products, but affordable products only exist as long as there is people willing to work for less than you. There is no way around it really....

It is also sad that many of these Chinese companies are lying through their teeth when there are inspections and even coach and force employees to lie. The inspectors for the company themselves probably turn the blind eye to it, I'm sure....

Steffl3r3204d ago

Not Microsoft, its KYE Systems, how about stop arguing over warranties and see the problem at hand, which is the company that Microsoft BUYS the hardware from

Welcome to the Peoples Republic of China. Why would anyone be surprised by this kind of story?

Foxgod3205d ago

Yeah, but now they blame MS for it, instead of China.

GameOn3205d ago

and to be honest there are much worse things going on out there in the world.

For us to live in luxury other people have to live in squalor, or so it seems unfortunately.

Polluted3205d ago

That's exactly what I was thinking. I respect China for getting their sh*t together, turning around their financial woes and becoming an economic superpower in a really short period of time. Then stories like this come out and you really gotta wonder...

When are these guys going to clean up their act? And if they do, will they be able to maintain the sort of economic growth they've been seeing? It's a sh*t situation for everyone involved.

Oh and uhhh...xbawx sucks? RRRRAAAWWRRRRRRRR!!!!!!

spunnups3205d ago

Microsoft doesn't have to take advantage, but they do. That doesn't make MS any better.

ramiuk13205d ago

how is it MS fault, its full of em over there

all the big brands have sweatshops and what many would consider slave workplaces, but they also pay about £60 for a xbox 360 and we pay £140

its there goverments fault nobody elses

mrv3213205d ago (Edited 3205d ago )

It goes on to claim that the American Chamber of Commerce in China (of which Microsoft is a member) helped to block proposed contract law that would have improved factory conditions in the country.'

Hmm... yeah, not Microsoft fault let's all blame communism because that's not a tired thing to go and do. I know after this let's repeat 'Better dead than read' because clearly any country who's seen the largest growth in money and is not a large economic player is a bad one.

Capitalism is pretty bad, there's tens of capitalists countries which do something similar... this isn't just communism you know, in fact in TRUE communism and by which I mean to the book and letter then this should never happen if capitalism which has lead to a great deal of slavery or are you going to remind me of how Russia create slavery of west Africa? Democracy doesn't always work, nor does Communism. And before you label me a communist or something let me clarify I am open minded and if something I said was incorrect please correct me, I believe that the best government is the least corrupt one, regardless of regime within reason of course.

feelintheflow3205d ago

You are correct, no form of government is perfect. In fact there really has been no government over the years that has stayed the same. Like in America, we live in a Republic, not a democracy, and we are on our way to socialism. Good or bad, we already are a slightly socialist nation, just look at our tax code, social security, medicare, medicaid, and now the new health care initiative. There is a re-distribution of wealth. In Nazi Germany, socialism didn't work, in Russia, communism didn't work, unless you liked waiting 8 hours for a roll of toilet paper. The rise and fall of ancient Greece, Ancient Rome, the Wiemar Republic, and the list goes on and on, shows that no type of government really works. That is because governments become corrupt. That is because people become corrupt. They see a way to make money and do it. Maybe College made me cynical, but to for some people to say that it is just because China is communist, does not make for a very solid thesis.

apple's works in chin are 7-15 year olds
