Top 5 worst series reinventions

If there's one thing you can count on from a successful game series, it's that it will eventually start to go stale. At this point game companies have a choice: keep churning out the same thing every couple of year 'til sales dwindle so badly that there's no point carrying on, or re-invent the series, taking it in a bold new direction. Sometimes this second option breathes new life into a series, perhaps even taking it to even greater heights of success than ever. But there is a big risk of royally screwing it up and making long-time fans feel betrayed and heartbroken. Here are five such 'traitors', named and shamed by Play.

The Last decent Sonic game was Sonic Adventure (Which I personally loved) I would love to see it hit XBLA or PSN (which it is rumoured to do)

Burnout Paradise- great game and great dev support after its release. No split screen really killed it for me though.

Tony Hawk Ride- Could have been much better if they actually made the board work properly.

Sonic- Please stop killing sonic. I had high hopes for Sonic 4 until I saw the video where Sonic is in a mine cart. I'll probably still try the game out because its sonic but I have lowered my hopes for this one....again. See video comment to view Sonic's mine cart level.

I think Burnout Paradise is a great game with loads of hours playtime in single and multi-player. It also had some great DLC. I wouldn't say it was a bad re-invention of the series.
Don't know about the other games though, haven't played them.

we need a new sonic pinball, with boss battles / hidden stages / 1 sec load times

Snookies12170d ago

Definitely agreed. I loved Sonic Spinball back on Genesis. I want a new Mean Bean Machine too, while we're at it!

Snookies12170d ago

Still need to check out Frontiers at some point. Just waiting on a really good Steam sale for it.

I didn't realise it was that popular.

How Burnout Paradise bucked the trend and made open-world racing irresistible

Met with derision from existing Burnout-series fans at the time, Burnout Paradise remains arguably the greatest open-world racing game of all time. Here's why.

I don't know why - and I know I'm probably on my own here - but I liked Takedown more. I think it was just 'different' enough to feel fresh. I also loved the destruction.

On that note, a new Motorstorm would be nice! All that mud, dust and car pieces flying everywhere blew my mind on PS3 - imagine what they could do now.

NJShadow352d ago

I loved Burnout Paradise, but Burnout 3: Takedown will always be the best game in the series, for me. Burnout 3 is arguably the most fun game ever made, with the greatest licensed soundtrack ever.

I played through the remaster quite recently. It's not as good as I remember, but I think a lot of that is because the "open world" thing was still pretty fresh back then.

I do think there's a gap in the market for a game like Burnout. With the new gen they could really make car damage a huge selling point again.

Paradise gave me open world burnout before I knew it was a thing.

Burnout paradise remastered and original are my favorite, i got the platinum trophy for both games the nighthawk is my favorite car

Personally don't give a shit for open world racers. Give me a new Motorstorm, Split second, Outrun.
