It's telling me that my USB drive "doesn't meet Xbox 360 performance recommendations". I'm wondering if that's legit or it's their way of trying to get me to buy one of their extremely overpriced USB drives. Their site says the "recommendations" are a drive formatted with a FAT32 file system and at least 1gb of space, which my Kingston 8gb does meet.

I don't know having all that extra memory, (why didn't they just make a bigger memeory card), I think something else might be up....
I willing to bet that the new ability of the x360 to use up to 16gb on a flash drive is gonna affect alot of upcoming games including REACH. I mean think about it, if developers were to pack in a flash drive it could solve 3 major problems that they’ve been having.

Problem #1 not every x360 has a hard drvive so they can’t assume they can do a zip then un-compress installation to save disc space and speed up load times.

Probem #2 Limited Disc space of about 9gb max on a dual layer dvd vs. a blu-rays 25gb for a single layer and 50gb for a dual… The 16gb flash memory + the 9gb from a dvd effectivley gives developers the same amout of disc space as a single layer blu-ray disc.

Problem #3 Disc swapping and the Multi-disc liscencing fee Microsoft charges for games that use more than 1 disc. And a limitation on sandbox style game’s and persistant world goes away too,

By packing in a 16gb flash drive they solve all kinds of disc space, swapping, and installaion problems. And I can’t imagine that it’s gonna actually cost them that much in comparison to what it cost to produce a game on a blu-ray disc those disc’s are expensive….way more expensive than a flash/dvd combo.

But bottom line I think it will be awsome… to be able to do this if they do...

I'm getting a strong feeling that we will be hearing about that redesigned 360 at E3! Everything is pointing to it. That arcade bundle with the extra games is out and has moved some 360's. This update will effectively kill off the BS memory cards that most people don't use. That pic of the redesigned motherboard is right in line with how MS' past leaks were announced.

I believe it's coming!

To those asking about if you need CD's or not... I would imagine it would work like having your mp3 player hooked up to it.

Just to clarify something...360 has had USB support since day 1. How you choose to define that term "support" is going to vary. Right from the start you were always able to plug in an external USB hdd or flash drive and view pictures and videos. It was limited to WMV files at first but it was later that more codecs were added to view other video types.

Music was later added in the form of ipod/zune support to listen (but not import) mp3/aac tracks. As far as music goes, you could always stick a music CD in the tray and rip the tracks for custom in game music (something not every ps3 game offers) for any game.

An advantage the ps3 offered was the ability to import/export certain file types to/from the ps3 via external drive. That seems to be a feature the 360 is now getting (to some extent). I believe this move is in relation to them suing Datel over their memory unit that offered expandable memory to do the same thing.

MS dropping the MU slots in a revised 360 is very possible. One thing is certain, this is a very welcomed feature that has been long overdue. Wii offer game launching from SD cards, PS3 offers import/export of game saves and media via flash drive. 360 now doing both of those features is a nice plus.

edit: oh yeah...those who want to complain about the MS branded USB drives. Sandisk is the partner and they also do the exact same thing for the Wii SD cards and PSP/PS3 MSProDuo cards. Sandisk gets more $$ for their products not because they are better but because they imply the simplicity of just plugging it in and it working.

I am sure there will be a list of flash drive mfgs that are guaranteed to work with the 360 mush like there are lists of SD and MSPD cards that are guaranteed to work with the other systems. Just because it is a USB drive doesnt mean it is built with the same chips as the next one. Some cheaper ones are made that way for a reason.

I'm telling you. The reason they're not going to support blu-ray is because they're pushing Digital Distribution for consoles. They already have a whopping 80+ retail games in their "Games on Demand" store, and now they're supporting USB flash drives for storage. This will eliminate the complications and limitations of DVD-9, but will also allow developers to put as much content as they want into their games.

Every possible sign is showing this, and I also have no doubt that the Valhalla motherboard that was talked about back in 2007 will fly onto shelves as well, in the form of a slim model.

What would be really nifty, is if they sell 150 GB flash drives that completely replace the current HDDs. This would not only eliminate the issues of what the hard drives produce on the 360, but it would be more affordable and more efficient.

@Arnon: The future of digital distribution (in gaming) is on my PC where I can play more than a "whopping" 80+ games (try more like 1000+ and that's just on Steam) from decades past and present. And that's WITHOUT having to buy tiny-but-overpriced hdds that screw me over in the long run as I build up a sizeable digital collection of full games, demos, videos, and addons. And no it doesn't cost an arm, a leg, and your firstborn.

It is not meant to be elitist or proclaim some kind of PC dominance. It's to say that MS has a long way to go before they can truly claim they push the digital format in regards to gaming. And it's not impossible to match Steam on consoles, the manufacturers just don't want to do it.

I agree that lack of BC in latest consoles sucks, but Sony has never 'promised' BC. They've mentioned it as a selling point in the machines that had it, but then once they got the price down enough it seemed senseless to try and make it a selling point when it was cheaper to just buy a PS2 for it.

Them removing it from future models was a sensible move when considering they dropped the price at the same time where you could get 2 PS2s with the difference. that's not very probable - it will take ages to understand how GameOS work - reading assembler code is not much fun and if by some miracle they manage to digitally sign their own version of GameOS or circumvent it you'd still need the FPGA board Geohot and others are using, good soldering skills and a fat PS3.

You will notice you can no longer due that as the Xbox doesn't recognize it anymore, I plugged my phone into my other Xbox without the update and guess what happened it worked!!! Way to go MS

Still a shame they capped it at 16GB, larger flash drives are rather cheap now and obviously more flexible than a 360 HDD. Which is no doubt the reason for the cap. Hopefully they'll up it at some point, better than nothing though.

do you know what BLOCKS of data means? It says BLOCKS, not block. It means multiple files at the same time. The PS3 can transfer data, but only one at a time. It seems with the blocks of data, you can queue up multiple files and transfer them all at one time. Much like the way you queue up multiple files to download ala PSN Store and XBL Marketplace.

1. Users/buyers already knew that the Slim didn't have OtherOS feature so it wasn't a loss, but owners of the fat paid $600 with OtherOS as part of the feature list.

A few things sort of stuck out at me. Your point #2 has some possibility but I feel sony may actually NOT bring back PS2 emulation in the way some think. Some think it will be added back in for people to just play their ps2 games when I think sony may go the GoW collection route. That isnt to say its bad but rather than just simply adding in BC for older games, they will more than likely up the ante by making them better than the originals with increased res and trophy support.

Be it for download on psn or retail I have a strong feeling we will be seeing more resurected ps2 games in either compilations (like GoW) or individuals.

your point #3 also interesting as the only difference between the 360 and ps3 versions of usb "support" was the ability to transfer non protected data to/from the ps3. 360 always supported viewing non protected data via usb since it came out. Later it was added zune/ipod data (protected) was also viewable but still non transferable. So far the ps3 does not let you move full games to an external drive. The 360 may/may not let you do that but it certainly levels the playing field when it comes to import/export of data on the hdd.

I will try it out (like many will do) and see if will let me move a full game (shadow complex or ????) to a usb drive along with my gamertag. That combination should allow me to play that game from the flash drive seeing as the game is tied to my gamertag. If the game is tied to the system it was purchased on then it most likely wont work.

Oh..as for your point #1 goes. That seems more like personal conjecture than anything poignant.

The titles are tied to both the gamertag and system purchased. I have two 360's. An original launch and an elite. Up until I bought the elite I was purchasing my XBLA games on the pro. When I would play them (obviously) I would sign in as me and the games are full games but the interesting thing is that there are sub account on my 360 as well.

My son and wife have their own silver accounts (really wish MS would allow for online play via sub account with gold profile on the same system but that is another issue for a later time....) When either of them would sign in, the same games were available in full to them (sans online play).

After getting the elite, I also picked up a memory unit (256mb) and moved my gamertag to that. I can plug it into my elite and download all previously purchased games from my pro and play them in full as they are tied to me and I can play online as well with them. I can even see when my family is playing the same game as me because they are added as friends but, alas, they cant play online against me.

What i do now is I generally purchase my games via the original pro so they can play them as well. I then download the purchased games to my elite when I plug my MU in to it. The interesting thing about this update is if it will let you download/purchase full games and save them to the USB. It should work so long as the GT is also on the same USB. Then you could plug it into virtually any 360 that is connected to the internet, sign on using the GT and play them from anywhere.

I have my external HDD attached to my 360 most of the time anyway cause I like to watch videos and listen to music though it. Being able to copy game data has just done it for me.

I know that there are many of you who want to praise Microsoft for this feature. But for the $30 that I'd pay for a 16GB USB flash drive I could buy an 80GB 2.5 inch laptop hard drive.

What Microsoft really needs to do is release an external hard drive enclosure for the 360 that lets you buy any 2.5 inch SATA HDD and use it on your 360. The barn door is already open in terms of piracy, so might as well let consumers have some freedom.

By your claim, you say the 360 needs to allow for any size 2.5 sata hdd to be connected and used. To put it simply, you can now with this update.

Follow me on this. The update allows for any USB drive to be useable on the 360 up to a max of 16gb. This includes (but not limited to) flash drives, media card readers w/MS or CF or SD cards as well as external hdd.

I know it may not be the "exact" answer you are looking for but it is still an answer that apparently works. It is just a matter of perspective. The bonus in this sense is that while you have 16gb dedicated to use on the 360 you can use the rest of the space for PC/PS3 stuff.

people are going to view it differently. I myself am more interested in offloading live arcade games and my gamertag and being able to take the flash drive to virtually any other 360 and sign in and play.

There was a rumor some time back about importing audio/video but that never happened. That is an advantage ps3 has that I like although...once the video is on my ps3 it wont let me copy it off to any drive I may have connected.

Example: my ps3 has the media card reader. If I put a cf card in as well as a MS into it I can copy from either to the ps3 hdd but it wont let me copy from one (CF) to the other (MS) using the ps3 as the bridge. Same goes for ext hdd.

Oh well, not that it is a big thing but it would have been nice to be able to import non drm stuff (music/videos) to the 360 hdd instead of using a pc to stream.

This is nice to have. My Sansdisk Cruzer USB drive works with the update. I think people will find that most high quality USB drives will work and there will be no need to buy the MS brand one.

There's a second 360 in my house and I wanted to test out this feature (first 360 is being repaired....once again). Turns out my brand new 4gb USB storage device failed the test. LOL,OK. At least it works for *some* people instead of not being there at all (beats the hell out of using those overpriced memory cards). Although it should be noted that not all USB storage devices will work and it has limitations (e.g., 16gb max, can't copy music, movies)

What brand is your usb drive? You need one with a fast enough read/write speed and one that will not wear out too fast. I am doubtful that my usb drive that came with Saints Row 2 collectors edition (ps3 version) will be compatible.

yeah i love the PS3 but i got & XBOX too just for gears of war :)what kind of crappy system downloads a demo and when it gets to around 50% complete of the demo it goes back to 0% yeah thats right the crappy XBOX
