Official Firmware 3.21 Feature List - Sony

Yesterday in the night Sony launch the most recent update for the PS3 that has as intention eliminate the aptitude to install another operating system in the console. The update v3.21 was planned to be launched during today (April 1), but it is understandable that have advanced it to remove any doubt that the advertisement was April Fool's joke. This update is for the consoles previous to the Slim, provided that this model did not have this capacity since it was launched here is the official features list from Sony.

I think Sony just went about all this all wrong. No reasons given, no actual responses just "we're removing Other OS. Don't update then you miss out." That's just so wrong. I'm reading this:

What kind of **** is that? Basically saying, you don't have to upgrade...you just loose a good percentage of what your $400+ purchase can do. Feel sorry for those (including me) who actually use Other OS. Just seems to wrong what they're doing...or better yet HOW they're doing it. Can original fat owners get a free PSN download or SOMETHING? I mean ffs Sony, you're scared of some dumb exploit and instead of trying to patch it you just anally screw all of your original PS3 buyers over and take the feature away.

If it was an exploit in the web browser or media streaming and they took those features away, would it still be ok? no, because people use those features...just like SOME people use Other OS. As I read else where, 1% who use other OS of 30 million is still 300,000 people.

Seriously a lot of these people complaining that much apparently have something to hide about the whole thing. They removed it for a reason; either suck it up and move on or go back to 360 full time. Apparently there's more to the story than what a lot of people know or care to pay attention to. The majority of people I know in real life didn't even know how to load it or even cared to, they bought the ps3 for games and to play online not to load linux (or win98 if you know how to do it successfully) so that leads me to believe the majority of people (notice I didn't say everyone) are either 360 crowd wanting to start some s-it or hackers that can't bootleg anymore.

I can understand if they removed backwards compatibility or something that extreme; but removing a feature less than 1% of the user base even knows about?

And if anyone wants to challenge me yes I still have my original 60 gb ps3 and a slim and I run Ubuntu remix on a notebook.

Microsoft update changes RRoD to E74 to stop people from asking for their consoles to be repaired because Microsoft rushed.

bummer.if it isnt bad enough that sony takes a feature off my ps3 (yes i do own 1),but wot really annoys me is the updating every month for something utterly tedious.i could list a bunch off useless features that they could strip out..err HOME and facebook are 2.

anyway..xbox might not have a web browser but at least they dont strip out features when they feel like it.

Dude, you probably never had an original 60 gb PS3 like I do. You probably have the slim which might also be unlikely. So how can Sony take away a feature that you never had. Slims already lost support for Other OS. It's one f%cking feature, dipsh!t, not 100.

Also, that's a lie, the last update was in December. They do not update every month which tells me that you don't own one.

Also, Microsoft doesn't need to strip away features because first of all there's barely any feature that it includes. Also, there's no need as the 360 has been hacked to death since the day it was released.

Can we stop hating geohot yet? His intention wasn't piracy like everyone want to make it out to be, he wanted to make it to allow people to make homebrew on the PS3, if you followed his blog on the PS3 he was extremely reluctant to releasing it. And lets look at it this way he could do the following for people who just use their PS3 for linux and such. Sony never have stated officially why they are removing it though it probably is because of the exploit.

1. Ignore and and say oh well
2. Fix what he started for the people that use it for linux

You're all going apeshit because of what he did, so he violated your precious box of parts, get over it, he does these sorts of things, like jailbreaking the iPhone so it will work with carriers other than ATT. If he didn't someone else would have eventually, most of you have probably never even used linux, its just you wanting to rant and complain at someone, there are very few people who actually use linux on the PS3 and sony could make custom firmware for the government organizations that chain PS3's together and use linux on them for supercomputing (which they likely already have custom firmware)

GeoHot is the one who opens Pandora Box. He may never ever have any intention to pirate games but once the hack is published(maybe big ego!) there will be plenty others crackers who will see that as a opportunity to make money illegally of it. That don't care that GeoHot is brilliant.

Your example of iPhone is not exactly accurate imho. Mainly because people still have buy iPhone even if they want to use it with other carrier. Closer would be an example when there is a hack that would allow people to download 'paid' apps from Apple Store without paying for them.

The other example could be if I hacked into your bank servers and broke its 1024 bit encryption. I am so proud of that fact that I decided, as a prove, to post Raypture banking account, user ID and password. I did not take a dime from your account but somebody else did. Would you blame it on me or would you say "he is brilliant, no harm done".

People may be down on Sony for this move but publishers and game studios are quite pleased I'm guessing. If their profits go down because of piracy, then either game quality will go down or they increase game price which is already high.

Don't forget world does not start and end with US, Canada and Europe. There counties where no one enforceces copyright laws. You get any DVD for $1, any PS2 game $5 to $10 or 360 for up to $20 or less. And nobody is hidding with this thing either. Is as open and easy as going to 7-Eleven and 100s more stand than 7-Eleven chain. Anybody who travels a bit would know what I am talking about.

I actually installed Yellow Dog on my PS3.

Switching between "Default OS" and "Other OS" turned out to be most inconvenient(I'm trying to be polite here) and allowing only 256MB RAM was enough for me to give up on this feature.
Installed Ubuntu on my PC(dual boot).

I don't see why there is so much sniveling. No one is making anyone update firmware. If you want a box that is a plaything for messing around with other OS installations, than don't update it. If yuou still want to do both online & other OS, then get another one for online.

I have always geeked out with computers & stuff, but even I see a legit reason for them to remove this from the system on boxes that are connected to a network they provide as a no cost service. If people didn't dig around for an exploit, & brag about it on the Internet, then this whole thing would not have gone down the way it did.

Idk man. The retarded dumb@ss that commented first is clearly a microsoft fanboy troll, but still... the mentally disabled idiot is pretty much right. My browser freezes ALL THE TIME. Email doesnt work, youtube messages dont work, etc. Go to encyclopediadramatica and it pretty much immediately freezes and makes me restart the PS3. Facebook used to freeze all the time too... not sure if it still does. Gamespot as well. Not like you can even search for games with the browser... it just says "searching..." forever and never stops - which if you navigate away from the searching page, it freezes.
Scrolling too fast on long pages by using both analog sticks (with the cursor at the bottom of the screen) for too long causes it to freeze as well... Oh and flash, that rapes the memory and pretty much forces you to close the browser anyway. Most of the time after closing it, you just get the little spinny thing in the top right corner and you're forced to hold the power button.
Not to mention every time it freezes, it takes forever to actually shut down. :/

The PS3 browser sucks on my 60GB PS3. Come to think of it though, i've NEVER had the 80GB PS3 upstairs freeze on me. Not once. Though i don't really use it that much. Maybe it's a model thing? Whatever. Thank god for my Computer/Macbook always being beside me now. :D
