PS3 Firmware (v3.21) Update

PS Blog: The next system software update for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) system will be released on April 1, 2010 (JST), and will disable the "Install Other OS" feature that was available on the PS3 systems prior to the current slimmer models, launched in September 2009. This feature enabled users to install an operating system, but due to security concerns, Sony Computer Entertainment will remove the functionality through the 3.21 system software update.

In addition, disabling the "Other OS" feature will help ensure that PS3 owners will continue to have access to the broad range of gaming and entertainment content from SCE and its content partners on a more secure system.

C'mon Sony.:/ its been a while since a good one came out.

Darkstorn5150d ago

WHAT!? Sony's taking away the Install Other OS feature? I just upgraded to a 320gb drive and was going to put Linux on it. This blows.

freeblue5150d ago

i don't think sony will take away functions. if they do, it basically meas the hackers did win.

rambi805150d ago (Edited 5150d ago )

Sorry - But this is kinda unnecessary - they dont even make that console anymore

Like Yahtzee would say - Thats a d!ck move

EDIT - this better just be an April fools joke

Darkstorn5150d ago

Sony should leave it alone. If gamers want to run the small, small risk of screwing up their systems by installing linux, then let them do it. I just don't see what good can come of this update, and those of you who are saying this is a 'brilliant' move on Sony's part aren't helping.

raztad5150d ago

I perfectly understand removing this feature, being a Linux only user, Sony needs to protect the PS3 against unwanted hacks.

Takoulya5150d ago

I was really looking forward to installing an OS onto my PS3. I guess that's not going to happen. What the hell, Sony? What the hell...

zoks3105150d ago

But we should all understand why Sony is doing this, and that's to prevent hackers from compromising the PS3 using Linux or other OS.
So if anyone is upset about this then take it out on the hackers that we have been hearing about for the past few weeks who are trying to hack the PS3.

fox025150d ago

First it was the BC, the SACD and USB ports, now it's the Linux support... what will you take from the PS3 next Sony...?! The internet browser? Oh damn I shouldn't give them ideas.

badz1495150d ago

for those who said that "they are about to install linux", "are about to use that feature" and so on...the old models had been in the market since 2006 and JUST NOW you wanna use that feature? yeah right! you guys just wanna have something to moan about! especially you GEC!

I'm not saying that this is a good move from Sony as I'm also against taking out features! but this is the only 1 feature I've never used on my PS3! it's a nice option but for an average Joe like me, nothing much you can do with it! so you wanna use emulators and so on but your average windows PC runs rounds over the PS3 linux in terms of everything! come on, it's so fvcking slow and limited! or am I missing something? personally I have nothing to loose!

p/s: you can also thank GeoHot for this update as well!

_TheSituation_5150d ago

dont worry its most likely an april fools joke...like going from 3.15 to 3.21? wtf? just for one little removal? i dont think so. should of said 3.16 and i would have believed it.

GiantEnemyCrab5150d ago

Badz I've had the function installed since day 1! I bought the console with it and I want to keep that feature. I don't care how long it's been available. I created my HDD around it so don't try and tell me I just wanted to start using Linux yesterday..

It's no excuse to me or someone who installed it on launch day.

Megaton5150d ago (Edited 5150d ago )

I never used it, and would have never used it had my PS3 phats survived. That being said, and assuming this isn't an April Fools joke, this is terribly retarded. One whiff of PS3 hacking, and Sony folds like a house of cards, flat out removing a feature that is already phased out in the models they currently produce.

Disgusting. -100 points, Sony.

van-essa5150d ago

I feel bad for the 3 people that installed Linux on their PS3.

Ravage275150d ago

this is only going to affect less than 1% of the userbase, though i'm fully expecting a flood of haters to start pretending they are victims in the next few days.

Yeah it sucks for people who truly utilize it, but we should have seen this coming the moment that d*ckhead geohot started bragging.

Bereaver5150d ago

I'm going to laugh if it's not an april fools joke and a lot of people try to sue sony. Then sony looks under the hood and notices they only installed the other OS after they heard about suing lol.

Anyway lol, it's probably an april fools joke.

meetajhu5150d ago

Don't worry guys Sony will not remove other OS. Its a April fool joke.
Sony said before itself that they won't be removing it because customers paid for that feature!

phalanx_mark5150d ago

sony already removed other os option back in fall last year when they introduced the slim:p

Ninji5150d ago (Edited 5150d ago )

1. Since when does the blog gives us updates like this on a Sunday? Something like this usually waits until Monday-Friday.

2. It's said to take place on April 1st? I say it's an April Fools joke.

3. April 1st is on a Thursday and since when do they put out Firmware updates on Thursday? Tuesday is when they release firmware updates.

4. Going from 3.15 to 3.21 is also a pretty big leap for something that supposedly removes support and does nothing else.

5. Why would they say April 1st, 2010 (JST)? This is a US blog site so why give us Japan time? If anything they would use what they normally do and tell us the Pacific & Eastern times or use GMT.

I'd say this is a set up for an April Fools joke. We may get an update on April 1st but it will more than likely keep the "Other OS" in tact while giving us something like Cross Game Chat. Especially when it's something that Sony can talk about in their E3 Press Conference the following month.

ChineseDemocracy5150d ago

Update.. more like a downdate haha

no but for real, i hope it's an april fool's joke.

phosphor1125150d ago (Edited 5150d ago )

If you really cared for your ps3, you'd be fine with this. It removes the ability for hackers to get online and screw things up.

I used linux on my PS3 for the longest time, but in the end, I didn't need it. Scientists could probably still use it with some sort of license or debug ps3. Which can easily be done, so there is no real problem.

EDIT: @ 1.6
"looking forward" to installing linux? 3 years after the PS3 released and you are "looking forward" to it? You probably weren't ever going to use that feature 3 years after it was released so there is no need to complain about a problem that's not there.

deafwing5150d ago

... so much for hacking the system I guess.

kwicksandz5150d ago

PS3 - it only DID everything

Seriously by the end of this generation will the ps3 have any features at all? Only console in history to lose features over time?

RIP
Linux
4 USB
Card readers
SACD
PS2 playback

=(

blackmagic5150d ago

I have linux installed on mine... I wonder if it will stop working... I wonder if this will screw with my ps3 media server setup too? This blows HARD. I'm not very pleased about sony taking away a feature on a product I've already paid for. How can this be stopped?

mythamp5150d ago (Edited 5150d ago )

F**K you, PEOPLE WHO ENCOURAGED GEOHOT!!! not GeoHot himself.

Only thing left is to introduce the Pay for PSN services and bang Sony = MS = Indifference.

Oh and Kevin B. should move to MS's Ad Campaign.

badz1495150d ago (Edited 5150d ago )

sorry if you really have it installed day 1! I got carried away because I was thinking "Sony/PS3 bashing" is like your 2nd job LOL!

but I've heard people calling Linux as the poor man's PC! (not trying to offense those using them but solely due the nature of it being free and all...), Linux on PS3 is like the poor man's linux LOL! it was a cool option for the PS3 over any other console in history but with all the limitations like no access to RSX, small memory, lack of support and add-ons, why would anyone want to use it is beyond me!

granted that it unfortunately gave way for PS3's hacking, I think I can understand if Sony will really remove this option for security purpose although I'm not with them on this!

MEsoJD5150d ago

if this shįt is true.

I'm sure this is a joke.

masterg5150d ago

Why do people have a problem with this.
Most people who install Linux on their PS3 are not using the console for gaming. I never understood why Sony made this an option in the first place.

Selling a console with a $200 (at launch) loss so people could use it for it's power only.

jack_burt0n5150d ago

GEOHOT just fu*ked the whole linux ps3 user community not to mention ppl that use the ps3 for other applications what a total knob that guy is, the real hacking community knew this would happen and internally made an effort to avoid things like this because of the freedom sony gave from the launch of the system this is just one guys ego who did absolutely nothing with his hack to get some attention, if u know him shoot him in the face.

Syronicus5150d ago

Sorry, but having Linux on your PS3 is just plain dumb. Get a PC for that and leave the PS3 to gaming. This move is good for Sony as it helps protect their console from hacks a little longer. The hacks are coming but they needed to do something that would slow them down. In the end, Sony does what is best for us and they have proven that time and time again. They sold you the best console to date and want it to be hack free for your benefit so quit complaining.

TotalPS3Fanboy5150d ago (Edited 5150d ago )

for screwing over all these PS3 Linux users.

callahan095150d ago (Edited 5150d ago )

I installed Yellow Dog 6.1 on my PS3 the day I put my 500 GB hard drive in. I haven't booted up the other OS since that day, either. The removal of this feature therefore isn't important to me, I just hope two things:

1) That they are removing it because it will allow them to bring us awesome features that would have otherwise been difficult or impossible to implement (not sure how or why, but they sort of implied this in the blog post for 3.21)

2) The 10 GB of HDD space that my Other OS partition was dedicated to should be available as free space on my PS3 partition. Not sure how this will work, but I certainly don't want 10 GB to just disappear from my hard disk drive. I already e-mailed customer support with my inquiry on how this will work, I will hopefully get an answer by April 1 when the update apparently goes live. My assumption is that if I want those 10 GB back, I would have to reformat my whole hard drive, which I am definitely NOT doing. So that stinks, though not that bad, because even without this firmware, those 10 GBs are not available to my PS3, just the Linux other OS, which I never used. But I perception-wise, I don't like the idea that they are disabling that partition of my hard-drive, like it's just disappearing without a trace, and I can't get it back without formatting the main partition too. Bah.

It's weird to remove support for Other OS from the machines that once supported it, but if they can bring us better PS3 functionality and features as a result of this, then I support it.

nveenio5150d ago

If this is true, then it kind of sucks. I don't have Linux installed, but I always liked that the option was available to me. I hope it's a joke...if not, I'm a little sad.

Quickstrike5150d ago

you're going to have to upgrade to firmware 3.21 if you want to play certain games in the near future. Avoiding the upgrade is impossible unless you own two PS3s (one for gaming the other for Linux).

Syronicus5150d ago

Are you folks that are mad, angry about this because you liked Linux on your PS3 or are you upset that Sony is removing a fanboy talking point? The option to run Linux on the PS3 is lame at best and them removing it is not going to give anybody heart burn.

nefertis5150d ago (Edited 5150d ago )

Dont worry u will cool down when Sony bring out some more hot games.

sikbeta5149d ago (Edited 5149d ago )

This is for ya lame Hackers, thanks to you, now I can't have Yellow-Dog on my PS3, bunch of @ssholes! oh... and no one can complain about... read the TOS

vickers5005149d ago

This better be a joke. If it's not, then whenever the next hack comes out, I'm pirating every game possible. I paid 600 bucks for a top of the line ps3 (which was also overpriced) and now they are deducting features? Well, they are taking it out, then I can no longer support such a pOs company, so it's used games only from now on (if it turns out to be true).

And to all the people that don't give a sh*t because they don't use it, please shut your mouths. Not very many people use remote play with their psp's so would you have them take that feature out as well? I don't use linux on the ps3 (although I do have a version installed), but it's not the point whether how many people use it or not: the point is, is that they are REMOVING FEATURES that we paid for. It is just plain stealing when a company removes features from their product.

IdleLeeSiuLung5149d ago

Not only are you removing features in newer iteration of your hardware, now you are removing features on older released models!

That must be like the video game industry's first!!!

vhero5149d ago

Fair enough remove this to stop Piracy but what about the 10gb you put aside for this feature? You cannot exactly reformat your hard drive to get it back can you?? (well technically you can but losing everything to get 10gb back is just stupid). Really stupid move on Sony's part.

Disccordia5149d ago

Sony said way back when the slims launched that they would be removing this feature eventually for older models. The news is not an april fools/fake.

reaferfore205149d ago

So what about the people that already have and use Linux on their PS3's? Will it delete linux off the HDD and get rid of the partition? Or will it basically render the Linux partition unusable? I'd be kinda pissed if I had to format my HDD because of a stupid update to be able to use that 10gb of space.

sonnyz5149d ago

I thought that the only reason that hackers didn't want to 'hack' the ps3 was because homebrew could be run from within OtherOS. Doesn't the removal of OtherOS give more hackers more reason to actually hack the PS3?

Pillage055149d ago

F U GEOHOTZ

I don't mind since I tried installing linux and thought it was useless, but I do sympathize with those of you who enjoy the feature or even made their purchase based on that decision(well I sure hope no one made that decision solely on that, thatd be silly)

Hopefully it's an april fools joke, but if its not then my life won't really change because of it either.

cmrbe5149d ago

Sony fu*ked up as well. There is no reason for them to penalise people like me that bought our PS3 on launch. Sony should find a better solution to this than removing a feature that i paid for as well as millions of their loyal fanbase that bought their PS3 early.

I will fully support a petition or lawsuit against Sony for this. This is completely stupid if its true. No more on-line gaming for fatty for me. It will be just the Slim from now on. This is completely unacceptable. F*ck you Sony.

Screw that! I paid for that feature($400 dollars) when I bought the console I am not giving it up!

Looks like I'm done with PSN after April 1 if it's mandatory.. If my 40gig phatty even makes it that long.

Not a fan of these console manufacturers taking away features and it doesn't look like they are adding anything new with this update.

Lame Sony!

@below: I paid for great games and BR as well(no back compat here) but so what I also paid for the ability to install Linux.. And now what? I'm going to be left with an unusable partition on my PS3 and now have to reformat the thing?? All that work for me yuppie! Can Sony do no wrong in your eyes?

Godmars2905150d ago

Not liking losing Linux, but then I never installed it. Despite the temptation of being able to play tons of NES and other older console titles.

sonarus5150d ago

Lets hope its April fools...though i doubt it

With how much money sony lost with psp hacking they won't be taking any chances with PS3 which is just a damn shame. Although i don't use ps3 for that stuff

mrv3215150d ago

Now if this feature allows hackers to gain access to your console and bust it... who's fault would it be Sony's for not providing the protection or yours...

Sure their covering theirs backs, but did you honestly use the feature? HONESTLY. I've used it twice, the boot was too long and just couldn't be bothered loosing 10 GIG.

So what they didn't add anything new, they've added plenty.

In-game music
In-game XMB
Improved gaming preformance
Blu-ray 2.0
Just improved it.

Stop moaning, if your really desperate to run a OS buy a CHEAP laptop £100 and then get Ubuntu 9.1 for netbooks but I have a feeling that's not why your mad is it, you don't use the dual boot feature on the PS3 or PC. While I do, I like Ubuntu 10.04b1 alot but not enough to install another OS on my PS3.

GiantEnemyCrab5150d ago (Edited 5150d ago )

You guys are utterly amazing at your Sony shilling! It is incredible that you guys are defending this and nothing but disagrees for me being upset at losing a feature that I do use and have my HDD partitioned for it.

Maybe it means nothing to you because you don't use it, but for me and I'm sure others it is. All because Sony can't keep their system locked down. Same thing happened with the PSP and a certain file format that was removed and never came back..

I do hope it's just an April fools joke.

@mrv321: No, I added a 250gig to it as soon as I bought it and I use it mainly for emulation. So now you going to bring other consoles into this? I don't see the point you are trying to make. Yes, systems get hacked but I'm not losing a feature I use at the expense of it. Can you stick to the topic which is the PS3/Sony?

I do have a couple dedicated PC's running Linux. I just like having it all on the console.

mrv3215150d ago

So one your 40 gig PS3 you partitioned 10 gig, bringing it down to roughly 25gig for what? Most people use a PC to get Ubuntu on a disk, dual boot your PC SORTED.

Yeah Sony are the only one having hacker problems, no one else ever... Microsoft xbox is unhackable and so is the Wii. It's just sony with the problem. OH WAIT. Here's I.T 101, EVERYTHING CAN BE HACKED... with enough time and money 4 years is a long time.

Nitrowolf25150d ago

what exactly do you use this OS on the PS3 for?
really if why not just dual boot your PC?

Max Power5150d ago

be mad at the people who took advantage of what Sony gave them and ruined it for everyone else.

HighDefinition5150d ago

90% of your post I don`t mind. But right now, you sound like a little kid crying.

and OT: IMO It`s was a miracle they even allowed you to do that w/ the system. But, if it`s because of a security issue, I`m all for it. (PS, I don`t use the Other OS feature anyway)

Godmars2905150d ago

Can you, as someone who's only seen Sony doing wrong, explain to me what you use Linux on the PS3 for? When, since you seem to bash the console every chance you get.

Of course, from my personal view, Sony has done wrong. And as someone who has a 60GB model I don't see this as a good thing. But then as someone who never explored that aspect of my console, its not that big a deal. And given the recent hacking news, its also a necessary if minor evil.

Bathyj5150d ago

It sounds like just just want to complain, but if you do actually use this feature, then I'm sorry.

I dont, but I always thought it was a cool thing to have for those tech minded enough to set it up. Its a shame to lose it.

Going off at Sony is a bit much but, they try to give us all these things and then something always bites them on the arse for it. Sounds like you can blame that jerk who cracked the PS3 not Sony. Dont act all indignat because its not 100% secure. What system is. Its a console not NORAD, and I'd like to see all the people who were cheering this guy on at the thought of pirated games and cracked systems to see if they still like it now.

Not suggesting for a second that you were one of them Crab, but surely you can see why Sonys hand was forced here.

DaTruth5150d ago

If anybody else said it Crab, it would be different! You are just too huge a fanboy to take seriously at all!

Take your second comment; Everybody is a Sony shiller if they don't care that Sony is removing a feature they never used and never plan to. Only a giant fanboy like you would deny someone the right to not care about $hit that doesn't affect them!

bRAAAaaains5150d ago (Edited 5150d ago )

You just jump to ANY reason to whine, b!tch and complain about your PS3 whenever you can. You're too predictable, with a name like yours tis to be expected.

Waaah! PS3 is still lacking games! Waaah! PSN is still lagging! Waaah! Sony's taking away an important feature! Why Sony?! Why?! Just sell your freakin system, good riddance!

MiloGarret5150d ago (Edited 5150d ago )

Wow, the guy presents a legitimate complaint and you attack him like this?

It's... absolutely pathetic.

This site is broken.

OT: I find it hard to believe that it's real. On the other hand, if this is an april fool's joke, it's deff one of the worst I've seen...

GiantEnemyCrab5150d ago (Edited 5150d ago )

You guys and the same 'ol song and dance. Now you are going to attack me. The same trolls I see in 360 articles doing the usual 360 bashing. You can look through my comments in the past year and you will see I've been more than fair with Sony. I've given them props left and right and still enjoying the 360. You folks, still hating on the system haven't changed one damn bit. Fanboy to the core /salutes

You all work so hard trying to convince everyone how great the PS3 is and here you have a convert before your eyes and you still aren't happy? WTF? I still like the system.

Yes, yes I defend the 360 so I have no right to complain about the PS3. Even if I now have thousands of dollars invested in this platform? Right.

And DaTruth if these guys want to not care, that is fine but when they REPLY TO ME that is different. You don't see me going down the comments here and replying to everyone who thinks it's no big deal.

You all know this is a sh!t move.

Bereaver5150d ago

deafwing5150d ago

... man you should re-read that and listen to yourself.

Godmars2905150d ago

Dude - when have you ever been a PS3 convert? I can remember you openly and blindly attacking the system, once or twice voicing a concern, but I've never heard you defending it.

Given how badly you talk about it its a surprise that you even have one, much less invested an effort to install Linux so you could play emulated games.

The Wood5150d ago

GEC, dude this is an april fools......* hope* :)

vhero5149d ago (Edited 5149d ago )

@GiantEnemyCrab you have been a 360 fanboy on N4G since I remember and probably don't even own a PS3 so shut the hell up and stop with the BS. Also 360 doesn't even have this feature and never has yet you have one of those and never complained about it nor should you it was always an extra for those who wanted it.. So how about taking a tall glass of STFU?? Calling people fanboys when your one of the biggest 360 fanboys on here..

reaferfore205149d ago

For once I agree with GEC. I have and use Linux on my PS3 regularly, for emulators, word processing, and surfing the net. I don't have a PC so using my PS3 as one was far cheaper than buying a computer. I have a 60gb with a 10gb partition and if I have to reformat my whole system just to get that 10 gigs back I'm going to be a little frustrated.

Plus did they even release 3.20?

Nitrowolf25150d ago

i guess this really means that the hack is really legit?
wow here i was hoping that we were going to add more feature instead of take away features.

sikbeta5149d ago (Edited 5149d ago )

Actually is to prevent the hackers can go further with the exploit they found, a Very Effective Move cuz without the OtherOS they can't access the GameOS, no one can complain either, the TOS says that they can take out features if there is a Rason, so thanks to lame hackers, Linux Support is Out...

SuperSaiyan45150d ago

April 1st? Does sound like perhaps an April fools joke, the great thing about the PS3 is its functionality and Sony have since removed a few things here and there now they are onto removing features that are software based which is a shame. Here's hopings its an April fools and what Sony are really going to do is add some cool new features instead.
I have noticed that my Slim PS3 doesn't seem to have a slot where I can upgrade my hard drive unless I am not looking in the right place?

Nitrowolf25150d ago

i don't think its a joke
who really uses the other OS feature? and for what exactly? (other then hacking of course)

Games That Were Bad on Release, But Are Now Great

Good list..hoped to see Street Fighter 5 there..and it is.

Vits11h ago(Edited 11h ago)

Sea of Thieves... I'm not disagreeing that the game has improved in terms of content. But I feel that the most significant change between now and its release is actually the public perception. Nowadays, most people are aware that the game is a multiplayer PvP-focused experience first and foremost, and not "Black Flag made by Rare". Consequently, people dismissing the whole experience because the single-player aspect is lacking or the story is plain are much less common.

darthv729h ago

Several years ago, i submitted an idea to Rare that would change up the mechanics of battling opponents in the game. whereby if you died in battle, you turned into a skeleton warrior and had to fight your way back to the land of the living. It was an interesting twist on respawning and would allow the player to experience both sides of a battle.

I keep hoping to see something like that get added to the game.

Man, I don’t know why, but it also irks me when people try to tell others what to do. Fez was an awesome game, I couldn’t care less if the dev was a douche.

This is just extra cringe since the person actually doesn’t know what they’re talking about 🤦‍♂️

I wasn't cancel culturing shit. Phil phish is a complete douche. Did you bother to watch the video? Probably not.

I was wrong but call me cancel culture is just plain dumb also

Also crimson.

As you I'm human and we make mistakes. That was a mistake I mixed the games up. Shit happens. So go cringe yourself

Honest mistake, if you can watch that video and support the guy. Then I guess your in the same camp

You were wrong and that's that. Don't be so angry.

And yeah, that is a case example of cancel culture. It was a dozen years ago, he's apologized since, had Japanese developers rationalize with his remark, barely has done anything in the industry since Fez, and yet here you are, not even remembering the one game he made...
