Captain Forever and its peculiar Petri dish universe have been knocking around for a few months now, but it's sufficiently wonderful to merit a look even now. Like Lego, the game's charms are immediate, but they also deepen over time as you tinker and tamper and carve out a personal narrative told in hundreds of tiny glittering instances of failure and success.

The entire series of Farbs’ arena shooter Captain Forever is on sale right now for a mere $9 (over 50% off). Sure, the original Captain Forever is free, but its three expansion/supporter titles are not. The series is Flash-based, so anyone with a browser that can support Flash can play.
On the Tech-Gaming Podcast, I’ve occasionally mentioned the Captain Forever series of games, but I’ve struggled to describe it adequately. I even devoted an entire episode of the Rockin’ Android Podcast to an interview with the creator, Farbs. I feel that even the site for the series itself doesn’t immediately convey what the games are. This is intentional for the sake of immersion, but it’s potentially confusing. I’m going to try to explain the series in a concise but informative way (pro bono, mind you). I love this series and I want people to know why it is worth their time and money.
