Sony fans should not expect a 3D PSP announcement anytime soon.
I actually think 3d without glasses will be easier to implement on a handheld device considering there is little variation where most people hold the psp or ds. It will be easy to rely on a set but small "sweet spot" that hinders typical large 3d TVs. If the screen sizes of the 3DS rival the psp's screen then it might be possible to produce some good and noticeable depth in games. I think Sony will rethink their position in time. A 3D portable could be a good way to make the public aware and excited for the possibilities of "no glasses" 3D without breaking the bank because the screens will be a lot cheaper than their larger counterparts due to the smaller pixel count.
True but I don't think creating games that can only be played on a 3D PSP is something Sony would want unless you could get games that could work with or without 3D.
But I did watch Avatar in 3D and it was sweet! I like the idea of 3D but only if it is done right. I'm not sure why everyone on this thread seems to be sprung off the 3DS; maybe they like it because Sony doesn't like it. Anyway, I seems like a pretty cool idea, but I'm not confident that Nintendo will pull it off in any way they will intrigue me.
Yes this tech works fine on a handheld, but 3d isn't very impressive on such a small screen so I don't know that it's worth the effort. But I think Sony could be wrong about the market impact. I don't know anyone over the age of 12 that owns a DS and that demographic is very easily sucked in to what's "cool". If the kids decide this is a must have item then sales will be huge.
..tells me we are years away from acceptable autostereoscopy. Maybe it does work better on a smaller screen, but I have to see it to believe it. If people think glasses are annoying, autostereoscopy requires a precise "sweet spot", if you aren't viewing at the correct distance and angle, the picture will look like garbage. Of course if it was still that bad I don't think Nintendo would use it. I would like to think that they learned something from the virtual boy.
@1.4 That's exactly why it works better on a hand held device. The distance and angle to the user is more predictable. And if the user does move out of the needed zone they can easily move back. Much easier than rearranging all your furniture to make sure everyone is in the right spot :)
wow cmon "I think it remains to be seen where Nintendo goes with 3D on a portable," he added. "Having been in the portable space for quite awhile, I think it's an interesting move but one I'd like to see where they go from a demographic standpoint. 8 and 9 year olds playing 3D is a little bit of a stretch given where some of our research is right now." the whole kiddie argument should dead and buried by now. My wife and both her sisters have DSi's they killing prof layton. True the nintendo pokemon connection leads a non gamer to believe it's for kids but this dude is in the industry he should know better and whom ever is doing that research for Sony needs to be fired.
There are lots of people with a DS who are adults but don't kids make up most of the DS userbase?
He should have said casual gamers or non (hardcore)gamers specifying young children, grandfathers females who don't play xbox360 or ps3 games. Secondly A 3DS might be a harder for some people (8-9 year olds in this example) on the other hand the problem and solution simply lies at the design of the game. I do think that the psp is catering to a older more hardcore gamer audience than the ds. And I do think that the demographic Sony is aiming at,with their psp, should in theory be more attracted to 3D gaming. Like mentioned in the article it's interesting to see what's going to happen with the demographic of the DS3 compared to the normal DS's, will the people who buy psp's be compelled to acquire an 3DS? Moreover will 3DS/nintendo take a more direct aim at the hardcore (psp) game audience. Which market Nintendo is going after might be reflected by the inclusion of a joystick (pricing and specs) As a conclusion big fail on Sony side that they won't be having a psp 3D anytime soon.
I have absolutely no idea about the hard numbers but I do know the Dsi and DSi XL were specifically created to target the soccer mom and older gamer. The gamer who games in 15 to 30 minute increments here and there. This guy basically turns a blind eye to that demographic in any capacity and his comment is worded in such a way to suggest that Nintendo's only demographics is 8 to 9 year olds which we both know is wrong. They did this same crap with the wii and now move is touted as the "Grown" mans motion controls??? Maybe I'm living in a dream world but I remember when the people in this industry had Integrity and gave credit where credit was due.
"I think it remains to be seen where Nintendo goes with 3D on a portable," he added. "Having been in the portable space for quite awhile, I think it's an interesting move but one I'd like to see where they go from a demographic standpoint. 8 and 9 year olds playing 3D is a little bit of a stretch given where some of our research is right now." I think Nintendo knows their demographic much better than Sony. Perhaps he should look into to what is wrong with Sony's research.
He is Sony PR, what else do you expect? I hope you can't imagine him saying: "Oh yeah, everyone should go ahead and buy one of our competitor's products". His job is downplaying the competition.
no baum his job is to sell the consumer on his product based on it's own merits not by "downplaying" the competition and it's not just him it's this industry as a whole. Aaron Greenturd, Reggie Filthy-Piece, and Jack Trashaton all represent the big 3 and all bash in their own way. If you have good product you market it properly and put it in the consumer's hand and they make a sound judgement. If your product is the end all be all there is no need to mud sling. I'm sure those of us who bought a PS3 bought them regardless of what came out of Sony's trashy PR mouth we did our research and made a sound decision based on our interest same goes for any fan of any console on this site. It's one thing to expose a competitors weakness with facts i.e RROD, wii's graphics, or sony non-unified psn service. but the constant political / PR mud slinging case and point his 8 to 9 yr old demographic comment is false and uncalled for. Just my opinion of course.
Yeah...right. E32010, June 16th, Sony Press Breifing. "And now I'm pleased to uncover PSP3D, coming to EU,JP and NA shores in March 2011 for $599"
Before Move was announced I would call this flamebait. I really don't know anymore though :P
With the tagline: "3D Portable Gaming Doesn't Start Until Sony Says"
LMAO. You know it will happen. Keep innovating Sony ;)
Well PSP has done 3D (with the need of glasses) for Metal Gear AC!D 2
@All above PWNED!!!
People are quick to assume that this is a good thing, i think the 3D implemented needs to be judged first before i support it, if ALL games require 3D i question nintendo's logic.
Thought it was a Kevin Butler video lol.. **Off-Topic Anyone know a good website to show the sales of the PS1 PS2 and the PS3? Thanks in advance
Vgchartz? PS1 - 103 million PS2 - 142 million PS3 - 33.5 million According to Sony.
Thanks for the reply I'm doing a report bout sale >.< Bubble+
I wouldn't use VG charts then as they're just estimates
All sales companies figures are estimates whether it be NPD, Media Create or Vgchatz. Question is how good ar eth eestimates? The only 100% data is from the companies themselves. Look for financial reports (quarterly results) and the numbers that the big 3 have sold to retailers is there. If you want sold to consumer estimates then NPD, media create, vgchartz etc will have to make do.
So now Sony doesn't even know what they shipped! Lol!!
Where the hell was that said? I said sony know how many they have sold to the retailers! Lol!
So where is the time line showing move sports before wii sports. Where is the time line showing motion controlls in wii mote nunchuck style from Sony. Why wasn't a boxing game made for the eye toy? Seriously they are copying and it's sad because the adults that see this will say the same. On top of this if these games are not fun then it's game over. Hell it's game over now. Sony can't make fun games impressive maybe fun no. Take a ps3 to a bar and find out your self. Sony's only chance was to expand on what nintendo did their own way. Actually nintendo gives a great example on how to do this with the 3ds yet they are too arrogant to learn, copy and steal maybe but learn hell no.
PS3 3D= E3 Announcement
He should of just said an announcement will not be made anytime soon. All that other stuff was retarded B.S. 8 or 9 year olds Sony? Are you kidding me? Epic fail. So when you guys sell over 100 million, it is all kids right? Nintendo will get my adult money over some new PSP. That's for sure. Edit: Don't look foolish. Keep it real. I bet there are more people with DS's are over 21 than PSP. Why? Cause Nintendo outsold PSP 2:1.
I wonder if Sony still feels sorry for Nintendo for having to compete with the PSP? Ah 2005! ;)
Your wining like an 8 or 9 year old makes it comical that you are calling them out.
That's great that you're an adult and enjoy playing DS but you have to be completely ignorant not to admit that Nintendo's target demographic for the DS is children. Yes it caters to all ages but if you believe for a minute that ages 4-13 aren't the majority of DS owners then I'm sure Nintendo is glad you're not on their marketing team.
You don't seem able to parse the English language. Nintendo themselves acknowledge that their owner demographic is younger. The reason they target adults is that we are on generation 2 of handhelds (ie...todays adults had a Game Boy/Atari Lynx)...they appeal to today's adults looking for a bit of nostalgia. As Weedbush Morgan said back in 2007: The DS has proven more popular with younger children than Sony’s PSP; 80 percent of DS owners are 8 to 16 years of age, while PSP players tend to be 16 to 24 years old, according to analysts at Wedbush Morgan. But Nintendo, based in Kyoto, Japan, has also developed several titles for middle-aged adults, like Brain Age and Big Brain Academy, two memory-training games, and Flash Focus, a game designed to improve visual acuity. By making the device appealing to baby boomers, the company also makes parents feel better about buying it for their kids.
PS3 is another deal, but when it comes to selling over 100 million consoles portable or not...how can you say it's mostly kids? 127 million DS's sold. That means a higher percentage of adults and a higher percentage of kids play it more than PSP! Ask anyone adult or child and they will tell you they buy more DS games than PSP games. I don't care about N4g right now. This is real. Get the cuff outta here. My friends are adults, if they have a PSP they damn sure have a DS. Or only a DS for that matter. E for everyone means just that... EVERYONE. And a 16 year old is not an ADULT...lol :)
Butt hurt remember357? Its only abit of fun. You should remember this is N4G and much worse gets said. EDIT: And now your whining about his whining! It's comically hypocritical. ;)
I'm laughing at the fact that your crying like a child while trying to say that Sony is bullshitting like a child. It's comically hypocritical. EDIT: @above: Not at all, my ass is fine. How is it that I am whining? You can't whine an laugh at the same time! :) I'm not saying that anything is better or worse I'm just calling out someone who is being hypocritical, that all.
if they just unveil a 3d enable new psp at this e3. But looks like they show no signs of having it in development. Let's see what the 3DS does, I'm interested.
This will give the 3DS an insane headstart. A new DS with GC level gfx and a 3d screen, this is gonna sell like mad. Day one for me. And it better have blue tooth so i can connect the thing to my hearing aid's.
But I also think the idea of 3D on a hand held is pretty cool. as long as it's done right.
why do you have hearing aids?
Betcha if we go back in his comment history, we will find him bashing the hell outta Sony's 3D. Now 3D is kewl!
@DaTruth:Just like Motion Control, that's kewl as well now!
You do know that Logitech and Microsoft had a motion controller well before Sony did? So your comment is quite false. Despite popular belief from many on this site, Sony did not invent everything the same way Apple fanboys beleive Apple invented the world
But thanks for clearing that up, can you provide a link to some video? I'm not saying that Sony invented the idea of motion controls. I'm saying that they did not directly copy Nintendo since Nintendo was not public about their motion controls until long after Sony had shown off the EyeToy.
Remember all those 360 fanboys saying Microsoft aren't copying Sony with the slim? Go back and see how many motion control devices were made before Nintendo's, including Sony's own R&D projects; Suddenly, "it's teh copying!"
What has the EyeToy got to do with Nintendo? How is it similar?
I'm usually the last person to make a disparaging comment towards any of the big three players, but this is BS. Sony will wait for Nintendo to blaze a trail for them to follow like they almost always do. Then they will release a 3D PSP and tell us that it's something they have been working on for years. And to assume that only 8 and 9 year olds use the DS? Rubbish! Sony have been talking a lot of smack since the unveiling of the PS Move. Most of it directed towards Nintendo. I suggest they keep their nose out of Nintendo's business.
Lol. Fail comment of the day right here. :) Sony innovates just as much as Nintendo...if not moreso. Also, they do things better. They won't release a 3D PSP until the technology is there. Look at the Wii. It's a huge disappointment to most gamers. It's a gimmick. The pet rock sold well too. The 1:1 ratio wasn't there yet, but they released it anyway. Sony releases a system when the technology is suitable for it's purpose.
Lets not forget who started this whole 3D thing... at least before Nintendo! Sony makes Move, but with 1-1 and a camera and that is copying; But Nintendo makes 3D, but portable and that is not copying!
We all know this is a me too industry always has been always will be. Now if I'm part of sony's marketing or PR team I'm respecting the competition but at the same time touting my own product. Something like "it's not Wii too, it's Wii better" From there I would go on to highlight the improvements my company in this case sony made "True" 1:1 motion, motion gaming in HD, etc, etc,. At the end of the day it doesn't matter who did it first. What matters is who did it better and who's pockets are fatter.... And in the famous words of my boy JDizzle in Bad Company 2 as the Recon class. -TO THE TREES!!!!
Maybe no 3dpsp but i REAAAALLLYYY hope they announce psp2 lol
Am I the only one that doesn't care about 3D Gaming at all?
Most people dont...and wait until they find out how much 3D gaming will cost you...then they really won't care
Most 360 fanboys don't! Like Bluray, Motion controls before MS did it and whatever else MS decides not to do or Sony does first!
Nothing negative was said. Did you guys read it? He's right. Little kids just want Pokemon. They don't care about 3D on a handheld. That's ridiculous!
Its true, most kids aren't going to care as much if the game isn't fun an I wouldn't buy it if their wasn't more then one game I would play. For Sony's 3D with games, most of the games that are getting it are already out and most people own them and like playing them, so its all about how they make it work and what new things are put into games.
Sony through their research found out that the best motion/gesture interface is through a 3D camera and a physical controller. The EYE-Toy was a test run of a camera 'ONLY' interface launched to see how the public react to a 'Non-physical' gaming experience. While that was going on Sony's R&D group were heavily working on a motion/gesture based system that would 'WORK' well with gaming. The motion controller was never released for the PS2 due to the sheer amount of processing power needed for it to work in hand with a 3D camera. Now with the Power of the PS3's Cell Broadband Engine Sony can now deliver a 'TRUE' 1:1 motion/gesture gaming experience with a 3D based camera (PS-Eye) and a highly advanced Motion controller (PS-Move). So after 10 years of research Sony can finally deliver 'TRUE' motion gaming that WORKS, unlike Nintendo who assembled the WiiMote with off the shelf parts.
You sound like a big Sony advertisement. Bless.
i wonder if we will have a repeat.. "sony" "there is no market for motion control nintendo is crazy" 3 years later we have a wiistation 3.. i wonder if sony will be playing the wiitoo card with the psp as well, if the 3ds takes off..
"Casual gaming truly is the future of the industry." - Phil Harrison (Said at E3 04...two and a half years before the Wii was launched)
monkey see, monkey do, we saw this with the rumble feature, the analog sticks, motion controls, whats next? a playstation vitality sensor lol!
And Sony improved on all of those so your point is? I think it's about time Nintendo start copying Sony on how to make good games that'll last longer than 5 minuets before getting bored. @Wii ftw: Thanks for proving to me that you have done absolutely no research in to Sony's PS-Move otherwise you would know the difference by now, and I've just realised something, Wii fanboys are even dumber than 360 fanboys but that's not shocking really because you did buy a Wii after all lol.
Yeah they really revolutionised a rumble and they sure cracked those analogue sticks! Of course too you've played the Move constantly and no completely that it is much better. I understand.
I've played plenty of games on the wii that have kept me entertained for more than 5 mins. A lot of them I've played on and off for over a year, I can't think of many games on my ps3 that have kept me coming back. Not to knock the ps3, but the games aren't as long lasting, usually they get finished and sold off. Not so with many of the games I have for the wii, SD graphics or not.
Sony will probably go ahead and announce their own rip-off version at e3
You are confusing the copying of Wii's marketing with the copying of Wii's tech. (as an aside...'Wii' tech is actualy Gamecube tech since the controller was originally designed as an addon to that system) I haven't seen anyone say that SONY and MS are not jumping into this because of the marketing success of the Wii...but what I AM saying is that SONY didn't copy this tech from Nintendo...it is in house and has been in development since 2004.
No one said that the ps3 is copying the wii's tech, and I then provided two examples which out date the tech on the wii by large margins, 25 years, and 8 years respectively. People are saying that Sony is copying motion controls, the same motion controls that NINTENDO made popular.
so they been working on it since 04 and didnt bother to launch it with the ps3, instead they waited for nintendo to make it main stream.. just like they are going to wait and see if nintendo can make a 3d hand held main stream. but im sure sony has been working on that for year as well so....
I did an elephant impression with my body along time ago, does that entitle me to natal $$$
