VGArabia: Competition between videogames companies is a great thing for gamers. The fiercer the Competition, the better games we get. When you talk about great third person shooters these days, you have to mention these two popular and great franchises: Gears of War and Uncharted.

Ive played both games, UC2 at my friends place, and Gears 2 on my 360.

I also own a ps3 and own uncharted 1. It has way better textures then gears. Is it a better game, thats down to opinion sure. I actually found uncharted 1 boring and till this day I have not finished it.

I had way more fun with gears 1 in both its single player and online, but honestly lighting and textures uncharted was better. I didn't like the particle effects in uncharted at all. the nades going off with the mini mushroom cloud I thought was funny as hell ( in a bad way ) uncharted 2 was a very good improvement over 1.

I can't say the same for gears 2. gears 2 was the complete opposite though. thats just for me though.

Nothing on the 360 compares to what the PS3 has to offer in terms of graphics. Even in terms of gameplay, Uncharted 2 owns Gears 2. If you deny that then explain why it is that Gears 2 did not win half the awards around the world that UC2 has won? You'd better hope so.. since GeoW was released a year BEFORE Uncharted DF and GeoW2 was released a year BEFORE Uncharted AT.

So saying UC over Geow means nothing, since there is a a year difference between both games debuts and sequels.

And i will take GeoW over Uncharted everyday of the week... shame EPIC ruined Gears 2 multiplayer with "True Skill Matchmaking"... bring back Gears 1 old fashioned search option... made finding GOOD CONNECTION games so simple, because until global internet is compatible with all nations on a equal playing field, NO one should be put in game that isnt of a PING under 50ms.

Gears is not even close. You might not be a raging PS3 fanboy, but you are definitely a raging 360 fanboy. I've played Gears, and it was so stupid, I didn't even have the slightest desire to play Gears 2. What's more is that I played it on PC (with a 360 controller), and the graphics still weren't better than Uncharted (1 OR 2).

Gameplay isn't as subjective as people think, either. Uncharted 1 may not have been more intense than Gears, but Uncharted 2 definitely was. I can name 5 instances off the top of my head where Gears 2 doesn't touch Uncharted 2.

If you haven't figured it out, yet, I'm a Sony Fanboy because of Uncharted 2. In fact, I'm proud of it. And I'm not sure if there's anything wrong with loving a system because it has the best games...in fact, I'd almost call that a normal response.

As I do believe Gears 3 will not look as impressive as Uncharted 2 graphic wise (unless Gears 3 is on the next gen console), I do think it's a little pre-mature to pick a winner before you have seen ANYTHING from Gears of War 3. The tech demo doesn't count. A tech demo is just showing fundamentals of the engine and now the completed stages. Sure, I think it won't match up graphic wise, but who knows how the overall package will match up. Graphics are an excellent part of gaming, but never are they the most important aspect.

I don't what you guys are smoking but I have gears 1 and 2 on my shelf and every time I pop them in to play I can't get past the first hour! So freaking boring and I can't believe the graphics! Such low quality textures it hurts! The movement is also clunky as hell and all enemies are time bullet sponges! I think I will trade them both in before even playing them.

u cant be serious, have u even played UC2? badly designed lvls? how the f can u say that without playing the game. UC2 is the only game able to do what it did with lvls falling apart as u fight, jumping car from car while fighting, fighting on moving trains, u obviously only played the game for an hour if ur gonna say somethin like that.

and gears SUCKED! i played both, beat both, the endings were WTF that was it? with the first one just ending out of no where there are credits after u shoot the boss for 1 second with the turret, then gears 2 u hold RT and it dies........game sucked had bad story bad gameplay, people just like it cuz it was bloody.

I find the previous Gears releases too easy and childish for me. Maybe if I was 12 I'd enjoy playing chainsaw wielding hunchbacked freaks, but now it just seems silly. To be fair I also find God of war silly looking with these ridiculously huge blades on magically stretchy chains, but at least it's challenging to play. I haven't tried GOW III yet, hopefully it's harder modes are still hard.

Maybe if Gears 3 grows up a bit then I could be interested, but given the recent trend of sequels often being even easier than their predecessors I won't hold my breath.

I have to admitt. Uncharted does beat gears in graphic. But you are also right that gears beat uncharted in gameplay. I love tomb raider because of it's puzzles levels and the way it made you feel like you where really exploring a temple or cave to help find clues to artifacts in the game.

Uncharted just felt like I was just jumping from one ledge to the other. While dodging and shooting bad guys. That's why I like tomb raider better. Gears1/2 had a lot of action from begining to end. But the ending/last boss fight was just lame in my opinion.

Gears 3 beats Uncharted...1

I mean to beat Uncharted 1 it has to have more color variation and the gameplay for Gears is more slow paced.

I would say Geow 1 was better than UC:DF mostly because UC didn't have multiplayer at the time. I would have called graphics a wash. UC had some nice effects, but I thought GeoW 1 looked crisper.

UC2 does look a lot better than GeoW2 though. I really hated how they went from a game where you really needed to be afraid of the dark to a game where there were almost no dark places at all. That alone would have changed the game tremendously.

It's good to see that Epic is aiming so high. Gears is my favorite 360 exclusive franchise. Uncharted 2 is Epic and I am playing through God of War 3 now. I can't imagine it getting much better on the current consoles but bring it.

With that said, I particularly don't prefer Uncharted 2's overall look. I find the many vibrant colors distracting, as well. Granted, it is a good-looking game, I just prefer the more realistic look of Gears. If Epic can turn up the graphics on its already great-looking game, I'm all for it.

UC1 single player beats GoW1 single player.
GoW1 beats UC1 overall because it had a fantastic online multiplayer.

UC2 beats GoW2 in both single and online multiplayer.

I still can't stop playing UC2 online. I have my friends copy of Modern Warfare 2. I played it a couple of hours and then I had to go back for my UC2 fix. I still haven't put MW2 back in.

Gears of war 1 destroyed Uncharted 1. Without question.

Uncharted 2 is nothing more than a glorified Gears of war clone with straight forward platforming and a multiplayer stolen directly from Gears of war. That means it will never be on the level of games like Halo, GTA IV, Gears or Mass Effect due to it's lack of originality. The gameplay is jacked right from Gears, everything down to how the weapon select looks. It's sort of a mix of a bunch of games that already exist, and that's working against it.

The only thing Uncharted 2 has better than Gears of war 2 was that it had better graphics, but what do you expect from a game which is one year ahead of the other? Seriously, How pathetic.

Gears of war looked and played better than uncharted even in sales uncharted got slaughtered.

gears of war 2 graphically looks and play's better than uncharted 2. because uncharted got owned first time they decided to add Multi-Player to uncharted 2 and yet again they got owned in sales and graphics.

Let's see if Uncharted 3 can leave up to expectations and i wouldn't be at least surprised if Uncharted 3 fails again because they are trying to compete with the best developer and Gears of war 3 IP.

They will have to make Gears 3 far far better than both the other gears put together to even try to compare themselves to uncharted. In Fact I don't think cliffy b has the skill to take on ND, Future prediction, Gears 3 in april 2011, still doesn't look as good as uncharted 2(2009), and because of crappy DVD limitations the game will be 2 to 4 hrs long with no improvements to multiplayer.

Off the top of my head I remember Gamespot and G4 naming Gears 1 GOTY. Multiple, multiple awards for this series. Back in 2006, you really couldn't find better graphics on a console. If you want to bash Gears, you're bashing the game that set the bar for graphics at the time.

As for Gears 2, I don't think it won any GOTY awards but it had some tough competition. MGS4, LBP, R2, and Fable 2 just to name a few. Gears 2 had a lot of issues. I'm a true Gears fan, but I can admit they nerfed the shotgun, screwed up matchmaking, and had lag issues from the start. Of course, if you play the game today you won't have as much lag.

It still won best shooter from multiple places, so give credit where it's due.

And you're an idiot if you underestimate the rest of the year's titles. We still have unannounced titles from both companies, and I think you're forgetting about a little game called Mass Effect 2. It has a current meta of 94 for PC and 96 for 360. GOWIII has a meta of 93.

We also have Fable 3, Halo Reach, Alan Wake, Splinter Cell, and Crackdown 2 for 360.

Not to mention we have both MOVE and Natal coming, and we don't know if they're be good or not. We just have to wait and see what they can offer us.

I'd love to know where you got your crystal ball. The 360 isn't going anywhere.

Our opinions differ on that subject. Uncharted 2 has the edge on Gears of War 2's single player and multiplayer, but the multiplayer isn't anything special compared to today. The only good thing Gears 2 did right was Horde and coop, in terms of multiplayer. Gears of War 1, however..

There was NOTHING like Gears of War's multiplayer ANYWHERE when it came out. It was unique and one of a kind. And to be fair, you're comparing a 2006 multiplayer game with a 2009 game that had plenty of time to pick up tips and guidance from the slew of multiplayer games that came AFTER Gears 1.

I'm a huge Gears fan, so yes my opinion may be sided on Gears of War but I give credit where it's due. Yes, Uncharted 1 and 2 have superior stories and graphics, some of the best I've experienced, When it comes to multiplayer, I think Uncharted 2 had the advantage of releasing 3 years later. You can't sit there and play Uncharted 2 and not realize that it has taken a lot of its core from Gears.

I am a huge fan of both series, I remember playing gears 1 multiplayer for hours, Gears 2 mulitplayer was so broken that most of my friends and I went back to play Gears 1. The best thing about Gears 2 multiplayer is still horde mode.

Uncharted 2 shares many of the same qualities as the Gears series in terms of mulitplayer, theres coop (gears has the entire campaign, Uncharted 2 has a handful of levels), they both have a mode where you and your teammates takes on harder and harder waves of enemies, and the main difference in vs. mulitplayer is the platforming aspect of Uncharted 2.

Both games are examples of the great graphics that each of their respective consoles can pump out.

I love em both.

Now I just wish all my pals who I played Gears with would buy a PS3 so we could play Uncharted together.

Both great games and nothing like friendly competition between two capable peers. Naughty Dog raised the bar, now lets see if Epic can meet the challenge.

As a gamer I hope they are up to the task.

When Epic starts to have as much fun developing games as ND does, without $$$ in mind, without relying on ms, they MIGHT be able to bring a game to look as good as a PS3 exclusive..... if they make it on the ps3. Shadow complex to me was way better than gears 2 as far as gameplay AND visuals (or the same) go, Epic needs to make more games like that one and drop gears already.

One main difference is the colour palette between the 2 games. ND took a stab at Epic with the "next gen" filter. Honestly though, I think they're just playin around via twitter.. I don't really know if anyone can hate ND but rather respect them and only TRY to match up to the quality of UC2 which is why you have developers like EA and Epic talking about aiming for UC2 graphics like this.

Even though Cliffy's comment implies competition, I think between these guys its more of a friendly competition rather than a turn10 vs polyphony competition (that turn10 created and still tries to own)

Anyway, yeah, the tech demo itself LOOKS like it could ALMOST compete with UC, but the chances of them providing in game that actually looks like that is slim to none. With the vibrant / colourful palette of UC2, the near perfect animations and story driven plot, I find it hard to believe "gears 3" will come close, and that's considering all elements of the game when Cliffy is only talking purely of graphics (for some reason?)

the leap between uncharted and uncharted 2 was much bigger than gears to gears 2 imo and both in roughly the same time period of 2 years.

graphics:

gears -> gears 2 = graphical tweaks, more variety in environment
uncharted -> uncharted 2 = huge graphical leap making it arguably the best looking console game when it released

multiplayer:

gears -> gears 2 = refinements to mp but not too many additions + a ton of bugs. horde was a great addition though

uncharted -> uncharted 2 = inclusion of mp mode that was praised for being able to rival other mp components out there, some even said it was up there with the addiction of cod4's

Gameplay:

gears -> gears 2 = more varied gameplay, many different scenario's however had areas that were much weaker than the previous game such as the final boss.

uncharted -> uncharted 2 = more of the same gameplay but tweaked to near perfection in terms of action/platforming. some great set pieces such as the train fight.

Basically it could be summed up by saying that in a 2 year time frame Naughty dog made massive improvements to their franchise compared to Epic and their improvements to gears. With any luck gears of war 3 can be the jump uncharted 2 was over uncharted 1 and i have a lot of confidence it will be. For now though, Naughty dog have really pushed their franchise, Epic didn't so much

Thank heavens for the edit on this story. I was going to have to chime in on the fact that even though the Gears series looks fantastic, Epic is known for its graphical trickery. They don't expect the average gamer to go poking around the scenery and, for the most part, they tell an engaging story that pushes players along. That said, slow down and really examine the world up close. In favor of a steady and consistent framerate, Epic trades off with hatched textures to produce a simulated 3D structure. This is mostly evident in things like trees, bushes and fire.

I think any game fan should be able to acknowledge this without getting butt-hurt but I'm certain I'll get an ample dose of disagrees and equally flame-worth replies. To be clear, I said Gears is a fantastic looking game...just not up close. Naughty Dog are master of their craft and rarely resort to such tactics.

I hated Gears of War and loved Uncharted, but I hated Uncharted 2 and loved Gears of War 2. Weird. Anyone's game now, in my books. I'm not a fan of Unreal Engine 3 but Epic has done some cool stuff with it. Story is a bit better in Uncharted 2 but nowhere as good as people think it is. It's the characters that are good, but the story itself blows. First Uncharted had a much better story and better pacing as well. I hope Gears 3 is more "RPG-lite" as Cliffy B said it might be, in which case I'll probably like it better than Uncharted 3 unless they make an awesome story and having better pacing in Uncharted 3, but the story will most likely be exactly the same as the first two which are nearly identical themselves.

Hung isn't a fanboy. He is a HARDCORE to the CORE "adult" gamer that owns a huge collection of games and up until this year was more a 360 gamer (actually if I am being totally honest was also one of the biggest MS fanboys) than anyone I know. I know you can say the sky is blue and water is wet and get disagrees on N4G but tell me what he said that is wrong or misinformed?

The 360 appears to be running out of gas and MS has no one to blame but themselves. They should at the very least make the hard drive standard and allow developers to start using mandatory installs. Fans need to stop acting like their lack of a bigger storage capacity isn't an issue because that is not reality. I don't know how much making the hard drive standard would help but it surely wouldn't hurt.

BTW the favor I asked of Hung was to take a step ladder with him to E3 and ask Cliffy to climb it so he can punch him in the D1CK! Why? Cause Cliffy is one of those guys in the industry that gets on my nerves. No doubt the man is passionate about what he does but he comes off so arrogant and appears to suffer from a Napoleon complex like most little arrogant men do.

Gears of War 3, the 3 means the number of disc it will need to match up to UC2. Come on, get out of the DVD past. Seems like all the Xbox has is Gears. As I switch through games like UC2, MGS4, GOW3 and KZ. I often wonder how can it really get any better than this? That is not some dumb fanboy speak you gamers use today. Gears Of War 3 will be a great game. Both Uncharted and Gears look graphically impressive, but Uncharted has slightly better graphics than Gears. When Cliffy says "Naughty Dog you're going down", does this mean that Gears Of War 3 is coming to the PS3? It sure sounds like it! :D

Well there are many ways to examine this, 1: Foundation, Naughty Dog was founded in 1986 by Jason Gavin(Jason Rubin and Andy Gavin) while Epic Games was founded in 1991 by Tim Sweeney and Mark Rein. Already ND has a lead with experience as there founders, whom perfected the ND tech has returned further evolving their tech. Now that's not all there are writers for each company Amy Hennig lead writer and creative director for ND, for Epic there are Joshua Ortega(for Gears 1-2); in terms of writing Uncharted(Amy Hennig) wins hands down. Now there are engines to consider. Epic has the ubiquitous Unreal Engine(most recent Unreal 3) and Naughty Dog has the Naughty Dog engine and the Havok engine plus the tech of the PS3.

Next is credibility, commercially Gears is a juggernaut generating sales totaling 11 million while the Uncharted series comes in at over 5 million (Still impressive, I'm sure the 360 fanboys enjoy that part).Critically Uncharted is another juggernaut it is a critical darling that, in my opion deserves more sales. Keep in mind just because it sells great doesn't make it legendary as Gears has proven to me personally.

One of the most important things to take into consideration game-play; (Ehem) Gears of War 1 and 2 are tpts(third person tactical shooters) Uncharted is Action/adventure,TPS, platformer. Now do you see the differences here? By that bit of info even the most ignorant fan-boy should be able to grasp that how these two play will be different and you'll have to open your mind to that fact. I'll tell you why people associate these two together because of the cover system(that's mainly it)and the T-P view.

A final thought are the graphics Uncharted: DF was one of the most beautiful games I've ever seen, then Uncharted 2: AT came along and trounced it, both are great but Uncharted 2 is leaps and bounds greater than Uncharted: DF. Gear of War is kinda similar it's nowhere near as pretty or polished as Uncharted(series) but beneath it lies alot of creative detailed thought; then Gears 2 came along and people marveled at the graphics which were leaps over the original but had not surpassed Uncharted 1. Regardless Epic used the 360 fully to their advantage and made Gears of War 2 a huge success.

But to answer the question of do I think Epic can topple ND with the aforementioned Gears of War 3? No, too many limitations to take into consideration but this is Epic games they've been around the block quite a few times(both companies have). But if you think ND doesn't have it in the back of their minds to silence EVERYONE with U3(GoWIII included) then you're sadly mistaken.

EDIT: I dropped the ball a little I also want to say this is a friendly competition between two great developers that are pretty close. You fan-boys out there(the ignorant ones anyway) don't turn this into something ugly.

that's the sad part. Most of the guys here at LEAST the first 2 pages didn't read the article and assume he was talking about ND and uncharted. Now that isn't all their fault as the article was titled incorrectly and was wrote based off of a twitter post. Not the best place to gather information and add credibility to ones journalistic integrity.

Luckily the site has been updated with the appropriate information but unfortunately it's a little to late for that since we all know once a fanboy goes into rage nothing can stop it until said rage runs it's course.

N4G really needs to get like neogaf in a way. If this story was posted on neogaf without the contributer or site doing any sort of due diligence I think after 3 occurrences they are banned.

I suggest Cliffy B aim at a more "Reach-able" target hint hint. As the 360 flagship nears completion no one will be talking about Gears 3 for at least a year.

People seem to forget that there is more to games than visuals. Honestly as great as UC2 is I think Gears has better gameplay. UC is pretty straightforward for a TPS, it has a fantastic story and visuals which make it great. The story enough though is reason enough for me to call it great. Gears has great visuals though, both games looked stunning when they came out, but Gears has always has awesome gameplay though the story lacks. I also say I prefer Gears's online to UC2 though Gears 2 was definitely almost un-playable. Really it does all come down to opinion though most people will just pick the better looking one -_- But I think Uncharted and Gears both beat each other in certain areas.

I won't lie as I am a graphics whore but gameplay, control, and story are more important as graphics only enhance these 3 key features.

Gears 1 was great but most people are brainwashed by FPS and don't see the value of gears as opposed to UC2 where being in 3rd person was appreciated by climbing and jumping etc..
