Super Mario Galaxy 2 Omits Hub World In Favor Of Traditional World Map

We first speculated on it last month, but now it's confirmed: Super Mario Galaxy 2 will abandon the hub worlds featured in the plumber's other 3D adventures in favor of a traditional world map. Shigeru Miyamoto explains, "You can think of it in terms of something similar to Super Mario World or New Super Mario Bros. Wii, where you will have a rather convenient map to navigate."

Uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuugh. Hub world is a must for 3-D Mario games. This is sucky :( Really ruins the immersion.

Agreed. I hope this isn't the end of hub worlds in 3D Marios.

I think one of the most important things that made Mario 64 such a special game was The Castle.

I think Hub World is needed to retain that feeling. While the one in Mario Galaxy didn't have that special feeling like the castle, I wish they could make a new hub world instead of going for a traditional world map.

@Eamon

Definitely agree with you. This feels like a step back for the main entries of the Mario franchise. I remember powering on the n64 for the first time and appearing outside the castle with the freedom to go where I want. Hopefully they will decide to use and improve upon the hub world in future titles, because it manages to tie all the different levels together better than a stale selection screen.

Honestly, I loved the castle in Mario 64, but the space station in Mario Galaxy seemed pretty disposable. There really wasn't anything compelling or interesting to do in the hub.

Still, I'm not sure if this is necessarily superior. I guess we'll know in May.

Miyamoto: "Also because we’re going to incorporate a number of different stars and conquering all the stars is going to be one of the most challenging missions for the player, we want them to understand as easy as possible where they should go next and which places they should go back to in order to get access to the remaining stars."

I like that the game will have a few different structural changes. I don't think you guys should jump to the conclusion that it's the end for a HUB. This is the first time a 3D Mario sequel has ever been released on the same console so it had to change some in structure. If the levels are as fun as Galaxy 1, I'm ready. :)

Obvious corner cutting.

Screams 'lazy.'

And yes 'Nugan,' the space hub in Galaxy was awful. Completely uninteresting. Mario 64's castle hub was amazing.

Opens alot of room for branching paths and an even bigger game. Can't wait.
