Rein: Epic "owns" Gears IP, "can do what we want with it"

VG247: Epic's Mark Rein has said that the developer owns the Gears of War IP, and can do with it what it pleases.

Speaking with VG247 at GDC last week, we asked Rein to clarify for some of the more paranoid out there, whether or not Microsoft had some nefarious hand in the developer's cookie jar.

The story is too old to be commented.

oh boy i can already see the speculation this is going to cause

movements3141d ago

That's why:

It'd be a great move if they want to keep said title exclusive.

captain-obvious3141d ago

i don’t think this game going multiplat anytime soon

but if it did it would be great since more PPL can enjoy it
because you know this is what gaming is about ??
enjoyment and fun ??

it seems fanboys dont know what those words means

qface643141d ago (Edited 3141d ago )

uh no dude it would be a very dumb move for EPIC they can make more money in the long run by staying independent as well as having creative freedom to do what they want or work with whoever they want

your pretty much saying its a good move for them to pay billions of dollars just so they can keep gears of war exclusive

dangert123141d ago (Edited 3141d ago )

MS and Epic have an outstanding relationship through gears and shadow complex MS promoted the games like they were there own
for them to take it multiplat would really get under MS Skin...
They'd probz buy a few more studio's so they can actually keep there titles

ReBurn3141d ago

Good to know that's cleared up. Now everyone's free to make up whatever rumors they wish. Gives us all something to argue over in the future.

Jinxstar3141d ago (Edited 3141d ago )

With crystal tools, Cryengine and plenty of other multi plat engines running on both systems now it would not be worth it... The company is WAY to expensive for what they have right now... Potentially half a billion or more to keep gears IP....

@ Others

I mean Epic not bringing it to the PS3 at some point is kinda... I dunno. I say wait for E3. There is so much money to be had in the end and MS would have to beat that potential in order for it to stay exclusive... I feel Epic may stay exclusive similar to Insomniac or Valve but at the same time thats a lot of money for any company to simply pass up. Especially with a name like Gears.

morganfell3141d ago (Edited 3141d ago )

MS only owns the publishing rights to the 360 version. The PC version rights do in fact belong to Epic. As regards the PC version, U3 developers were actually given 5 levels of Gears 2 on the PC. It was downloadable from the U3 Developers Network. All first 5 levels with cutscenes were available and could be run on the PC with either KB/M or with a controller.

sikbeta3141d ago

Duh...Obviously, they can do whatever they want with it, so?

MurderMyDoll3141d ago

As much as i'd like to be able to play Gears on my PS3 the 360 is it's rightful home and should stay there

HolyOrangeCows3141d ago (Edited 3141d ago )

"we asked Rein to clarify for some of the more paranoid out there, whether or not Microsoft had some nefarious hand in the developer’s cookie jar"

They funded a multi-million dollar advertisement campaign and wouldn't have if it were on the PS3 as well. Don't try telling us that money had nothing to do with it.

iFLOWLIKEWATER3141d ago (Edited 3141d ago )

And I hate the fact that they tried to shoe horn the pc maps from Gears 1 onto the 360 in Gears 2...they looked terrible. Jacinto is from the ground up on 360 and it shows that the UE3 works well with the 360...

vhero3141d ago

They can release Gears 3 multiplatform and rake in double the cash in fact they could probably rival the latest call of duty this Christmas as we know there will be one just wait for E3.. They own the IP they can do what they want nuff said really..

mal_tez923141d ago

I liked the first game but can't play the second.

Even a PS3 version would be good.

himdeel3140d ago

...MS won't let that happen, regardless of what Rein says.

bioshock12213140d ago

I think he is just saying that he can bring it to the PS3 or any other platform if they wanted to but they wont since they have a great relationship with MS and they made it the huge success it is today.

WildArmed3140d ago

I think Gears is great where it's at.

Ofc, I wouldn't mind giving me back my PC gears 2.. they left many PC games hanging after the first.

Either way, where ever Epic takes gears, its bound to be good.

NateNater3140d ago

Thank you captain obvious!

Pun intended

pixelsword3140d ago

The people at Epic aren't dummies. I'm sure Epic's leaning this out for some reason; maybe to get Microsoft's attention, but who knows.

Besides, without a MAJOR upgrade, who's going to buy it who didn't already buy a 360 for it?

Que the asumptions in 3...2...1... /jk

On topic:

I seriously wouldn't mind playing Gears 3 on the ps3 if i could. I played Gears 1 and 2 when i had a 360 early last year. Hopefully Epic will do the unthinkable and make it a "CONSOLE" multiplat title. There's just too much money to make when you go multi.

maxcer3141d ago

like UT3? i swear most people here don't realize epic has made unreal games for the last 11 years, and all they have ever done is gears.

WildArmed3140d ago

UT3 was pretty bad... other then the awesome DLC support and Mod support they gave.

The previous (PC) iterations were alot better.. just my opinion though.

AXOi3141d ago

I couldn't care less. There is way too much goodness coming out on ps already

GR8 13141d ago

You really think that Microsoft will let PS3 have one of there biggest games on 360. NO

Marty83703141d ago (Edited 3141d ago )

Diference is Tool, that Epic own the Ip. Microsoft couldn't stop it.

EvilBlackCat3141d ago (Edited 3141d ago )

"You really think that Microsoft will let PS3 have one of there biggest games on 360. NO"

what if?

are you afraid of dying because of that??

come on wake up and be a gamer

“We own Gears of War. We can do what we want with it,” Rein told us. “We have a great relationship with Microsoft, and they helped turn the game into a huge success for us, and we are pretty happy with the way things are going”
