Does a game's platform influence its EDGE score?

TrendAnalyst blog writes: Every time EDGE magazine reviews a Playstation 3 exclusive, they are accused of bias by PS3 supporters, who are then mocked as fanboys who aren't satisfied with anything other than perfect scores for their beloved exclusives. EDGE are known to be harsh graders, and some respect them for using the full 1-10 scale instead of using 7-10 scale like the mainstream gaming press. The counter argument is that EDGE reviews every game harshly and it's pointed out that for every PS3 exclusive that gets low scores like Heavy Rain, there is an equivalent 360 exclusive.

To investigate whether EDGE is just harsh overall, or if it truly judges and scores games based on their platform, blogger TrendAnalyst made a comparison chart of the top 30 games from each platform, as well as the top 30 multiplatform games.

Even Jehovah is biased against the ps3.

LordMarius5151d ago (Edited 5151d ago )

All of N4G know the answer already, YES

blitz06235151d ago

No they're just dumb people pretending to be legitimate reviewers

Genesis55151d ago (Edited 5151d ago )

I'm not exactly sure what it is but you can tell they have some kind of beef with Sony.

When you put it in nice little picture graphs like that it becomes quite obvious where their loyalty lies.

Darkeyes5151d ago

Sony should just Blacklist EDGE from reviewing their games.. I mean what harm does it cause Sony, in fact it would send a strong signal to other biased sites like Eurogamer to keep their sh!t together and review games from a neutral stand point.

Bobby Kotex5151d ago

We all knew this, but these charts are hard to debate against.

morganfell5151d ago

Any way you slice Edge is biased. What will be more disgusting is how they stick their heads in the sand and noses in the air over irrefutable proof.

Were gamers to actually stick together (for once) they could put sites like Edge out of business and joyfully idiot staff there out of work.

I was about to post the same question but its even weirder for me I can't even find it in the latest section. I wouldn't have found it at all if I hadn't seen it in the pending section.

coldfoot5151d ago (Edited 5151d ago )

N4G is biased against me lol. I figured out it's the source filter, turn it off and the article will appear, although I don't think this article should be filtered.

chaostheory5151d ago (Edited 5151d ago )

I've submitted a request for help so hopefully this will get cleared up quickly.

OK I found the problem it's being blocked from the front page by the Source Filter. If you want to see all articles over 50 degrees on the front page you can find the toggle for the filter between the the top stories and the main news feed.

rroded5151d ago (Edited 5151d ago )

"While people may have different opinions on a few games, and could indeed review them differently and get different scores, 30 games consistently scoring lower on the PS3 and higher on the 360 means only one thing:

EDGE is biased to give 360 exclusives higher scores and PS3 exclusives lower scores. Their scores should not be taken at face value, as the platform unfortunately influences a game's score on EDGE. EDGE magazine has well written reviews, but their journalistic integrity is questionable."

like the dude says the numbers speak for themselves

FamilyGuy5150d ago

As if there wasn't enough proof before this analysis swoops in to further slap a "No credibility" sticker on the cover on Edge magazine.

I just hope this article gets attention and spread about the collective internet.

You know what's also funny that this article may have inadvertently pointed out. If Edge plans to give a low review score to a multi-platform game they seem to often claim "PS3 version tested" (FF13 5/10) and when a high score is to be awarded "360 version tested" (Bayonetta 10/10), thoroughly causing a negative effect towards all PS3 game rankings on metacritic.

It seems very much like it's all intentional with metacritic in mind of every review they publish.

pixelsword5150d ago (Edited 5150d ago )

but I sure do like them purtty colors.

Information Minister5150d ago (Edited 5150d ago )

I wonder if Aaron Greenberg will tweet this one.

Also, LOL at the people reporting this. I didn't see you standing up for N4G's quality standards on this story - http://www.n4g.com/News-491...

callahan095150d ago (Edited 5150d ago )

I just did some quick counts on this data and here's some futher info to chew on, these are all scores from Edge out of the top 30 games in each of the 30 categories:

Nine and Ten
------------
Multi: 10
360: 11
PS3: 3

Six and Lower
--------------
Multi: 2
360: 2
PS3: 7

Notice anything? Also, the Edge average score out of these 30 games for both 360 exclusives and multiplatform games is right around 80%, whereas for the PS3 exclusives it's about 67%.

callahan095150d ago

Not sure how I got a disagree on my comment above. That really disappoints me. I didn't throw out any opinion or commentary or anything, I merely stated pure factual numbers. And here we go with the numbers again:

Avg. score from Edge for the top 30 multiplatform games = 80%
Avg. score from meta for the top 30 multiplatform games = 87%

Avg. score from Edge for the top 30 360 exclusives = 79%
Avg. score from meta for the top 30 360 exclusives = 81%

Avg. score from Edge for the top 30 PS3 exclusives = 67%
Avg. score from meta for the top 30 PS3 exclusives = 82%

Number of multiplatforms scored 9 or higher by Edge = 10
Number of 360 exclusives scored 9 or higher by Edge = 11
Number of PS3 exclusives scored 9 or higher by Edge = 3

Number of multiplatforms scored by Edge the same or higher than the meta = 5
Number of 360 exclusives scored by Edge the same or higher than the meta = 12
Number of ps3 exclusives scored by Edge the same or higher than the meta = 4

Look at the numbers.

It's funny when you go to events and see some of these Mag/Web publication represenatives around. It's even funnier when you see them scrambling for interviews and such. It's even more funny when you see that the Edge crew are like little babies pushing their way through the lunchroom line to get to the milk cartons 1st.

But what's sad is that Sony is so good to these people. They really are, not just Edge either, and these people use every crutch they get to break the cast off Sony and expose their wounds. The "MOVE" at GDC is going to get raped by Edge and others... Wait and see. We couldn't believe some of the blatant jabs some of these journalist were taking.

CARRIERHASARRIVED5151d ago

Journalists? More like glorified trolls.

Nicholas Cage5151d ago (Edited 5151d ago )

they really need to blacklist edge.

Nicholas Cage5151d ago (Edited 5151d ago )

Top 10 games: These are the cream of the crop for each platform. These are the Halos, Uncharteds, COD4's, GTA4's that sell millions of copies and systems. When comparing the top 10 scores, EDGE gives 360 exclusive games 3.7 points less than their Metacritic average, multiplatform games 6.9 points less than their Metacritic average, and PS3 exclusives a whopping 11 points below their Metacritic average

While people may have different opinions on a few games, and could indeed review them differently and get different scores, 30 games consistently scoring lower on the PS3 and higher on the 360 means only one thing:

EDGE is biased to give 360 exclusives higher scores and PS3 exclusives lower scores. Their scores should not be taken at face value, as the platform unfortunately influences a game's score on EDGE. EDGE magazine has well written reviews, but their journalistic integrity is questionable..

PlayStation is killing it with the exclusives this year. Exclusive wise, what has xbox released this year?

VersusDMC5d ago

They won't complain about Microsoft not releasing games here but put all their effort into saying that only first party counts. Games like Rebirth and Grandblue Relink don't count. Games published by Sony like Helldivers 2, Stellar Blade and Rise of the Ronin don't count because Sony don't own the studios.

It's some narrative building so for when Hellblade 2 come out they can say, seemingly without shame, that Microsoft is actually releasing first party games this year. And claim victory.🙃

Chevalier5d ago

Weird 1st party games didn't matter when Xbox had so little, but, now they're important again? Guess Ark 3, Stalker 2 don't count any more?

KyRo5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

ARK 3 doesn't exist and it's just a timed exclusive. It's also a game that a majority of the ARK player base doesn't want as it's a massive deviation from what people like about the original game

Abnor_Mal5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

Honestly to me it doesn’t matter what they say, they are just finally getting a chance to say all the things PS fan(boy)s were saying to them for the past few years. Let them get that, they deserve a “win” for a change.

The new narrative is that suddenly first party games matter again when awhile ago they didn’t, but that was because they were struggling with the same three games with the occasional fourth or fifth. That games should be everywhere on all platforms since that’s whats happening to theirs. The consoles don’t matter just the ability to play anywhere. Whatever Xbox is doing Sony will soon follow.

They’re not moving the goalpost anymore, but rather just moving the whole damn stadium.

jwillj2k45d ago

Only a incel would care about who published what and who owns who.

If it’s not on the other consoles it’s an exclusive.

Killing what? Where are the 1st party games??
Stellar Blade and FF7 is what I’m seeing this year.. so shallow!!!!

andy855d ago

Doesn't really matter as long as they're great games. Baffles me why people put an emphasis on 1st party. They're still games you can't play anywhere else this year

Cacabunga4d ago

Andy

PS brand is my favorite because of their stellar first party software.. currently I see absolutely nothing to go crazy for..

CS74d ago

Nonsense.

PS1 and PS2 was built on great third party exclusives like FF, MGS, GTA & Tekken.

RonnySins5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

Killing it my a$$! The 1st party is still MIA and no... Remakes and remasters don't count.

andy855d ago

I mean they literally do count. Imagine saying FF7 Rebirth doesn't count 😂

Tody_ZA5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

@Andy85 Don't forget the remakes for Demon's Souls and Shadow of the Colossus, two of the best PlayStation games around!

And beyond PlayStation, what about Resident Evil 2 and 4? RonnySins wins the award for dumbest opinion!

raWfodog5d ago

Of course I love the games I’ve played from PS but I don’t believe we need to limit it to ‘exclusive’ to acknowledge that Xbox will be releasing some good games this year also. In that same vein, I believe that Xbox diehards shouldn’t limit their acknowledgment of good PS games to 1st party. There are plenty of good games to go around for everybody.

Tacoboto5d ago

This is a Playstation article about Playstation games and your comment is about Xbox. Can't you just celebrate what PS has without dragging this into console war BS?

ChasterMies5d ago

I don’t think Microsoft is releasing games exclusively on Xbox anymore. They have some timed exclusives that release on Xbox first.

Returnal, Astro Bot, and Ratchet made having it since day one worth it.

GT7 free updates and Spiderman 2 and others at 60fps have made this last year more than okay.

But yeah, it’s been dry lately. BG3 and third party have made great filler, but we ready for that SOCOM or Killzone announcement and some more 1st party goodness. Crossing fingers for Ghost of Tsushima 2 announcement this summer.

Didn’t know Helldivers was exclusive! Wtf is going on at Xbox that they can’t get these games, series s strikes again.

SonyStyled5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

Sony owns the Helldivers IP. The first was a PS3/Vita/PC game. It was never an Xbox game that they could ‘get’ a decade ago. I’m not sure what the upset is with Xbox here

CS74d ago

Lol, how do you ignore Rebirth one of the best games ever made?

anast5d ago

Looks like they are on par with the previous gens. Solid games all around. Interestingly enough, we can't say they released a bad game yet this gen. Unlike the Quiet Man dustup.

I actually do not mind if Marathon releases on multiple platforms . I just wish that Marathon has a dedicated single player campaign.

Helldivers 2 is exactly what gaming needed. I’m loving it.

For coop, get a used switch instead

jznrpg98d ago

I own a Switch and have never played co-op on it. I do play Elden Ring , Demons Souls and some other co/op games with my friends on PS5. Baldurs Gate 3 is the next game I’ll play co-op. Can’t do that on a Switch

Cacabunga97d ago

I was thinking for couch casual immediate fun.. not online coop games that require some adaptation.
