I disagree with the extreme twists element - if you play it off well, you can really make it work without screwing the player over. You just have to make the emotional impact really work.

Yeah, I agree with you, but I think what he was saying is that putting extreme twists or surprises in a game is a big risk. If you really peeve off the player, you might not get them back.
