Will Final Fantasy XIV Be More Well Received Than XIII?

Final Fantasy XIII is considered by many game reviews a good game. Though many gamers out there will consider a mid-8 metacritic score below average. For Final Fantasy, it is below average. While Square has tried to revamp the series and make it more appealing to Western audiences, they still have a ways to go.

With XIV expected to come out later this year, will the upcoming MMO be a bigger critical success than XIII? Will the game appeal better to Western fans? And will XIV be a much better title than XI?

Maybe it all depends. Not a lot of people like MMOs to start with, I personally think it will grab a lot of attention from people. Yet the moment you say monthly fee a lot of people jump ship, Hopefully this won't be the case since XIV is going to rock.

I honestly don't think so, because they are very different games if you ask me about "VS XIII" vs "XIII" well that is a totally different story "VS XIII" > "XIII" (only if it stays EXCLUSIVE if not we can expect another S-E fiasco).

Even if it does come to the 360 the fact that this is an MMO means it's allowed to call for a HDD and a size meaning it won't have to compromise any other platorms version by releasing.

Unlike FF13, 14 can force 360 owners to have a HDD to play it so it will be exempt from the biggest negative issue claimed about ff13 (linearity).

Final Fantasy 13 is announced for the PC and the PS3.

In my opinion, Microsoft will never allow XBOX 360/XBOX LIVE and PS3/PSN to intermingle with each other.
IF you disagree because of FF11, just keep in mind that FF11 was on the PS2 and PS2 did not use PSN.

Also, if it were coming, then why has it not been announced when obviously an XBOX 360 port would be easy as pie and Square has been making games for XBOX 360 this whole generation?

People here need to get there facts straight. FFXIV is coming to the 360 at a later date. MMOs can be cross-platform on the 360 because they don't use live servers to connect people, they use the developers servers.

1.8 Do you really think FFXIV will use PSN because it wont, last time I checked PSN wasn't a PC service either.

As for the HDD issue, FFXI and PSU both require an HDD and so will any mmo released on the 360. You had to buy an HDD to play FFXI on the ps2 as well. People saying this are just making an issue of nothing.

Enough with the bullsh*t. Final Fantasy XI has connected servers between the PS2, PS3 (yes, it can be played on the PS3), PC and Xbox 360. It has nothing to do with Microsoft, and no, you don't need a gold account to play Final Fantasy XI online.

Also, it will most likely not receive adequate scores. Final Fantasy XI never really did, even though I love the game. MMO's in general never really succeed within the journalist realm, except of course, World of Warcraft.

It's not the same thing at all. We buy a game, for forever, we feel we OWN the game. It's why people have an issue with DLC that's already on the disc. With an MMO you MIGHT already be paying for your internet AND Live before paying a sub as well, no? Didn't it with FFXi on 360/Live? Most folk, however, pay for Live to play MANY games and while I think paying for basic online gaming is totally wrong yo have to admit, even if you neither like, need nor want them, the extras offered by MS in the package go beyond JUST playing online which your sub, after buying your game(which is likely to cost as much as a years worth of Live anyway for the disc without game subs)doesn't-that's just to play this ONE game.

So, while I see your point and, personally, gave up paying for Live late last year t isn't quite the same thing and if you ONLY have a 360 to play online with how would not wanting to pay yet again make you have any real , avoidable double standard?

I don't think pay to play MMO's will have an easy ride on the consoles myself as console gamers really aren't used to it AND already have to pay more for their games. At some point console owners have to say enough is enough, imo, as they don't get things as cheaply as PC gamers to begin with and who's to say SE/whoever won't come alomng saying the console gamers have to pay MORE yet again? I'm actually pretty glad I don't like WoW or it's ilk and never managed to get into an MMO(tried but found there to be far too many wankers playing them to make it worth my while as I was just constantly annoyed with someone or the others attitude or behaviour. Made me doubt gamers after one particularly bad attempt! Maybe I've just been unfortunate and met bad people, i'm sure plenty of great people DO play and enjoy MMO's but perhaps to know them you have to be in at the start of a game itself?

Anyway, quite like the artstyle for FF14 but have little interest in it apart from that and will, it seems, after finding the messy combat screens the biggest pain with FF13(I can't believe I'm the only one who will find them annoying/confusing at times)have to wait fr FF13Vs to see whether a FF can satisfy me this generation. always had the best feel to it, for me anyway, and I'm just hoping it remains an exclusive so we don't have all the rubbish over it that we had with FF13 itself! i've just had enough but I suppose it depends on Nomura being prepared to share HIS baby around the consoles(and if it's not using White engine why would we NOT suspect a multiplat announcement at some point seeing as CT is a multiplat engine)and how worth it MS feel the money spent of FF13 was. It seems reviewers are receiving FF13 pretty well despite what some people may say (for every 5/10 score I see 5 more 9/10 scores).

The thing is though, other than WOW, no MMORPG really gets a lot of press. I expect FF14 to get more than others, but it will eventually fade away to the legion of WOW players.

So far this year, the biggest surprise to me was the announcement of FF XIV, (mainly since I was just getting into the endgame of FFXI at the time and it completely caught me off guard). That said, I was looking more forward to XIV then XIII.

IMO tho, it's kinda sad that XIII will be remembered by a lot as the game that everyone will use in comparisons for PS3 vs 360 topics, then the game it was meant to be. I personally would rather of seen SE use the extra time and money to polish the PS3 version more and even add dual audio/extra features (due to the capacity of Blu Ray disc) instead of making it multiplatform. But on the other side, the good that comes out of multiplatform is that everyone will be able to experience the game.

As of XIV and XIII Versus, I'm still not sure about the exclusivity of those games. I remember reading about SE saying they want to move into an age of multiplatform games and not just support one side only. Just seeing the screen shots for XIII Versus, it looks like it will appeal to me more then XIII will.

Overall tho, I'm looking forward to all three games and can't wait to play them.

That would depend on what choices Square Enix had made to improve upon the overall experience.

There are also other factors such as subscription price, support, peoples current desire for an MMO, or even for a different Final Fantasy experience.

The reason there are so many Final Fantasy is because each game is a different story. Not a continuation like other games who can't seem to get over five installments. They treat each one like a new IP, while using the same name and few trademarks of the series.

Ok first off what you said made no sense but I am assuming you are referring to the Square-Enix employee who supposedly leaked that the game was coming to teh 360. That was never confirmed.

There are in fact a few reasons in place for why the game WONT come to the 360. First and foremost is MS's Greed. It seems they can not reach a agreement with SE about how the game will be payed for and if it will require a gold or silver account. FFXI did come to the 360 however it was the first MMO for the console so MS was most likely willing to do what it would take to get SE to get the game on the 360 and in the end they did.

The other reason is the engine. We have seen thanks to Final Fantasy XIII that the Xbox version was gimped. XIII in comparison to XIV is a small game. It's no strech to say that you would probably need a 60+ HDD with almost nothing on it to play XIV as the game is completely installed to the hard drive and doesn't run off the Disc(Even XI worked this way) On top of the fact that Performance issues to take into account. The game being a MMO it needs to work and if the 360 cannot handle it then there would be no reason for SE to port the game. The 360 has been known to freeze and crash in FFXI a much less graphically intense game. If it doing that in a nearly 8 year old game what hope does it have a running XIV smoothly?

1) Microsoft does not control how this game is played online. Final Fantasy XI, which is connected between PC, 360, PS2 and PS3 all run just fine, and does not require Xbox LIVE to participate; just the monthly fee of PlayOnline.

2) Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy XIV Online run on two separate engines, so your point is moot, and it honestly just sounds like your picking at straws with this second notion. Final Fantasy XI freezes on the 360, therefore, Final Fantasy XIV, a game releasing almost 10 years later, will suffer the same fate? It has nothing to do with hardware. The engine that was ported over to the Xbox 360 version was pretty poorly done.

Sorry but it seems you don't know much about XIV.

Square has said MANY times that XIV is running on the crystal tools engine and it's quite obvious by looking at screen shots of the game that it is. Final Fantasy XIII is the first game to use the crystal tools engine....on the PS3. The 360 couldn't handle the engine and SE needed to make a custom engine to get FFXIII running on 360.

2ndly as I said FFXI does what they want XIV to and it was also the FIRST MMO MS saw on the console so they were more then likely willing to play to Squares demands to get the game up and running on the 360. XIV however when it launches will most likely be more successful and because of that MS wants more control which is largely the reason it's NOT on 360 yet. SE HAS confirmed this.

They said something along the lines of negotiations with MS did not go as smoothly as expected and because of that the game was announced as PC/PS3 only as of E3 last year. They still want it on 360 but M$ wants things their way and not whats best for the game.

When the official FFXIV site launched there was a section under About and Game info that said Monthly Fee: TBA.

That section has since disappeared leading some to think the game may be based around Micro transactions considering some of SE's games in Japan are doing that. However I personally find it HIGHLY unlikely.
