There's been a lot of speculation concerning Apple and what some believe will be it's inevitable entrance into the gaming industry. But still many analysts have doubts, arguing that the company already has three gaming devices: the iPhone, iPod Touch and now the iPad.

The guy is full of crap and makes the vaguest predictions. He is pathetic. Jesus, anybody can tell somebody Apple is set to release a console. Look at the wording, it's very clever so that it doesn't sound wrong: of course Apple is "set" to release a console, but that doesn't mean they have one. Pachter doesn't rely on logical reasoning, he relies and spurting out claims without proof, and as long as it sounds interesting and as long as people don't take the time to question him he will continue to be heard.

And that's the problem with people in general, they never question what they hear. "Apple is not known for internal software development" Well gee, that must mean they aren't going to rely on first party! If Apple were to enter the gaming industry they would have to rely on some form of exclusives and I am sure that Apple would try. Just because they don't have an internal software team now doesn't mean they wont, why the hell would Apple even have one right now to begin with?

Plus, I can't really see this being successful. Apple i known for over priced hardware, and in the gaming market the hardware in known for being under priced to move software. I'm not loyal to anything other than God and my family, I just use my PS3 more and prefer it to my 360 mainly because my 360 is a launch model and has a ton of problems. I enjoy both consoles and tend to use my PS3 more because I want to stretch out how long I can use it before it craps out on me. Am I a fanboy when I talk about how good Mass Effect 2 is or how I enjoyed Bungies new approach the game design with ODST and Reach? Or when I talk about how I loved the first Gears of War and Prey and Crackdown? Or how I can't wait to get my hands on Metro 2033 or Conviction?

This is entirely just baseless speculation without even any kind of rumor to back it up.

Knowing the way Apple and Steve Jobs operates, its really unlikely Apple will release a true gaming system in the way of PS3 or 360. The way Apple sees things, is they already have the iPhone OS platform to fuel games development, so they wouldn't see a reason to step into the industry 100 percent with a dedicated console.

However, its a lot more likely that we'll see Apple put the iPhone OS platform on the Apple TV and an SDK alongside it to create applications for it in the app store. Thats probably the closest we'll see to Apple releasing a home gaming console.

Dunno if this will happen YET but I think it inevitable. Generally the market only holds 3 consoles steadily but if any company is able to break that trend it IS Apple.

They already have a HUGE user base that swear by their products. They do some nice things as far as product design and user interfaces go. All they would need is some serious technical horse power(ALA PS3) inside the console, heavy support from 3rd parties making REAL games and I'd probably gladly swap my PSWii60 set up for a PS3Apple set up IF it showed true promise.

The price point better comparable to everything on the market though. Apple has a tendency to be on the pricier side. Luckily the PS3 in its earlier days can be used as an example of how NOT to set a price for a console.

I will believe it when i see it but as far as apples console being better than the ps3 I think it all depends on where the apple console will be developed. If its developed in the us like the i products it will probably be better than the ps3 but more expensive. If its developed in china like the rest of the consoles than it will probably be equal to the ps3 as im sure apple will still deliver the quality no matter where its developed. Apple is so far behind Microsoft it isn't even funny. Sony Vaio out sells Mac books. The only reason Apple is still profitable is the PC industry is like tree's growing money and the Ipod Itunes Iphone things are very successful but will start to fall off.

Apple doesn't want to rule the mass market PC space. They want to rule the LUXURY PC space, and in this area they are blowing MS out of the water. MAC sales have set records in each of the last 2 years. Their laptops are so far ahead of anything else on the market, no one comes close. OSX is the most advanced OS on earth. Windows Vista was/is the laughing stock of the computer world. Windows 7 finally began to fix all the problems. The Zune is a joke compared to the ipod. The iphone is revolutionary and MS is not even close with anything in the mobile space. Apple is widely recognized as the hottest tech company on the planet.

So you dont have iTunes? QuickTime? or Safari on your PC? I've got a Mac and a gaming PC, and I can tell you the only reason I would ever install Microsoft's operating system because I game on the PC, other then that I primarily use OSX.

I actually have a custom built PC running Xp, Win7 x86, Win7 x64, and OS X snow leopard. I put OS X on there just to be a show off. I use it from time to time so no Apple fanboy can accuse me of not know anything about a MAC.

Itunes sucks and isn't worth me converting every song when my cell phone is a MP3 player. When most of the free world uses MP3 format. I don't own any Itunes or Ipod crap. It's good but not the best.
It's just easier to use MP3.

Quick time, don't get me started VLC player has yet to give me a problem
so I stick with it because honestly it's flawless and it JUST WORKS no matter what type of media file I try to play.

I have Safari and it sucks to. I have IE IE 64 Mozilla Firefox Safari Chrome and Opera. Chrome is by far the easiest and fastest, then Mozilla Firefox, If IE 64 wasn't Internet Explorer I would use it more often because it is scary fast in 64bit but Chrome is way more reliable than IE so I don't use it.

Safari has some nice features but it's slow and personally I prefer the simplicity of Chrome. Not to mention it RARELY crashes where as Safari has crashed on PC and OS X. I used Safari on PC before I added OS to my machine and I just didn't like it after a while.

So you can't play games unless you run Windows because your computer company Apple doesn't provide you with everything you need for your overpriced Apple. I put OS X on my PC just to make sure I fully understand the competition, some things I like most I don't. Getting on and browsing the net without worrying about updates and patches having conflicts with each other is great but over all 3rd party software for PC is better than Apples first party.

Now if Apple started making high caliber 3D games I would leave the PC in a heartbeat. I really don't like Microsoft but as is I'm a gamer and I will always have a custom built computer. Apple Microsoft doesn't matter to me (both companies are run by pricks Balmer/Jobs) until we start talking games. Apple doesn't have Battlefield Bad Company 2 coming out March 2 but the PC does and that's the bottom line.

If your into professional editing I'm pretty sure you need a Mac, Final Cut Pro is pretty awesome.
Some people blindly hate Apple, because I actually own one and I have a high end PC I can say that the OS that Apple provides is much better (IMO no need to cry about it). I can't stand the constant patches and issues that comes with windows, I was scarred from ME and Vista, the damage cannot be undone.

Wow.. if this is true, then pretty much the only people who would be buying it are the apple fanatics. I know that I wouldn't spend a dime on apple's overpriced products, especially when there are things out there that are far better, and cheaper.

I don't see many developers bothering to develop for it, but you never know.

One reason I say it will probably be underpowered because Apple knows NOTHING about gaming.

The biggest reason, though, is Apple loves to overprice everything, so they'll have to go extremely cheap on the hardware if they want it to sell at all. The more powerful the hardware, the more it will cost to build it. The more it costs to build it, the more they'll have to charge. On top of that they'll basically add in a fee just for the Apple logo, so it would then get pretty pricey. Therefor, if they want it to sell, they will most likely have to go on the cheaper side.

So yea, when it will be compared to the other next gen systems I'm almost certain it will be underpowered, unless of course they only intend on the rich to purchase it. That wouldn't be very surprising, though.

A fourth console would be a crowd. But if it has to happen I think Apple will go after the casual market as I see them as band-wagoners in the gaming world. I still see Sony's and Microsoft's consoles which will have the the hardcore games. Whatever, I got my PS3, PSP and xb360. My iPhone is gathering dust and the Wii was a waste of money. Don't need another console. Period.

Apple already has a gaming console, but it's desguised as a media box: the AppleTV

I've been saying this since it was introduced a few years ago. all apple needs to do is add a controller. Knowing apple, they'll vertically intergrate this to the iPod/Iphone/Ipad so you can play those devices on your tv. Probably wirelessly.

You see, Microsoft has a phone coming. This means that both Sony and msft have gaming, portable gaming, online gaming, and phones. all tying nicely together. what apple is missing is a home tv console that plays games... it has an online distro service via iTunes which will be leveraged to distro big games. Clearly this is why Valve is moving steam onto the mac platform btw.

Bottom line is that Apple won't just release anything on it's own. It needs to fit into the apple ecosystem. All the big players are doing the same thing. Applle is missing the home theatre juggernaut. Apple tv gaming will be it.

Pachter isn't reading a magic ball on this one. He's filling in the missing pieces, that's all.

Only third parties? Isn't that what the Xbox is doing? IMO they haven't had a solid exclusive that is dominant to its competition or third party counterpart. Also many exclusive games for the 360 share with the PC which usually turns out a better version than its console counterpart.

I like to at least try all systems before forming a verdict. Therefore, I'll support Apple. I don't believe the 3rd party BS. I'm sure there'll be first party titles. They wouldn't make it otherwise. Why create a system if you're not going to offer anything different from the consoles already out on to market. No, I'll support them. Hopefully, it's good, and encourages more competition. That's what I love about this generation. By purchasing their system, I'm hoping that the competition will be raised.
