Apple Set to Release New Console, Will Rely Solely On Third Parties For Software Says Pachter

There's been a lot of speculation concerning Apple and what some believe will be it's inevitable entrance into the gaming industry. But still many analysts have doubts, arguing that the company already has three gaming devices: the iPhone, iPod Touch and now the iPad.

Too late, Microsoft beat them to it. It would be interesting to see who would win a bidding war for timed exclusive DLC between Apple and Microsoft.

movements5590d ago

You could say that but remember, Sony and Microsoft were not the first two companies in the industry.

Sega, Atari and Nintendo all were there before them. Nintendo still is; so if it wasn't too late for those guys, why can't Apple make its grand entrance and be successful?

It's quite possible.

PirateThom5590d ago

You think fanboys are bad now?

Apple fanboys are the worst of the worst.

Al Bundy5590d ago

He said that they will rely on 3rd parties. At least Microsoft had Halo to fall back on. What does Apple have?

movements5590d ago

@ Al Bundy, you make a good point. It'll be rough for them depending only on third parties, but who knows, contrary to what Pachter predicts, Apple could invest in first party devs.

No gaming company should live without internal studios. It's paramount imo.

hardcore19125590d ago

Unless one of the big three (Nintendo, Microsoft or Sony) step out of the competition which will not happen any time soon imo. It will be very crowded, the industry can't accept another player.

mjolliffe5590d ago

I'm not sure if it'll do well though. It'll be very overpriced, unless it has something every other console around doesn't, which is unlikely.

-Alpha5590d ago (Edited 5590d ago )

Dont take Pachter seriously when he says "Apple will rely on third parties only"

The guy is full of crap and makes the vaguest predictions. He is pathetic. Jesus, anybody can tell somebody Apple is set to release a console. Look at the wording, it's very clever so that it doesn't sound wrong: of course Apple is "set" to release a console, but that doesn't mean they have one. Pachter doesn't rely on logical reasoning, he relies and spurting out claims without proof, and as long as it sounds interesting and as long as people don't take the time to question him he will continue to be heard.

And that's the problem with people in general, they never question what they hear. "Apple is not known for internal software development" Well gee, that must mean they aren't going to rely on first party! If Apple were to enter the gaming industry they would have to rely on some form of exclusives and I am sure that Apple would try. Just because they don't have an internal software team now doesn't mean they wont, why the hell would Apple even have one right now to begin with?

Maybe it's just me, but I find he utters absolute nonsense.

Saaking5590d ago

Apple making a console? So it'd be overpriced and they'd release a brand new model every six months? If that's gonna be the case, then no thank you. Still, I'd rather have Apple than MS.

R2D25590d ago

the xbox and PS3 f@nboys were crazy, wait untill you meet the apple console f@nboy.

XDF5590d ago (Edited 5590d ago )

What a troll you are. Some how even if we are talking about a common enemy named Apple, you managed to get your 2 cents trolling on X360. Wow, just wow.

OT: Apple already have a game system named MAC. It has little no no first, second, or third party support. I don't think it will work because without any first party, it is 3DO all over again.

But, it will be fun adding Apple fanboys to N4G. Art designers, yuppies, and tech nerds that hang out in Starbuck with their shinny white MACbook raging war against Sony and Microsoft fanboys. It will be good time. LOL

baum5590d ago

FAIL. Why would I want a console with content I can find anywhere else? Maybe I should ask 360 only owners...

blue7xx75590d ago

Except Michael Pachter never said Apple will release a new console I love how this website took it out of context to get hits. He was referring to the Iphone and how Apple wont ever get into the game business but the Iphone is a legitimately gaming console/handheld so in a way they already are but they will fully rely on third party games to support it.

Bnet3435590d ago

I don't think this is happening, but if it does, expect it to cost you an arm or a leg.

Theonik5590d ago

Quite oddly they had halo. Until MS decided to buy bungie and cancel the then Macintosh exclusive halo and make it an Xbox game.

@Topic, Patcher should just shut up. apple tried to enter the console market with the pippin and failed dramatically other than the iphone i don't thing apple will do anything in regards to gaming. patcher just makes a lot of senseless predictions in the hopes that 1 will be true.

mega BIG time5590d ago

its official i have absolutely no room left for consoles with my 360, ps3, wii, and soon to be apple

RememberThe3575590d ago (Edited 5590d ago )

lol The only time you'd see 360 fanboys and PS3 fanboys unite would be against the Apple fanboys. What war that would be lol.

Plus, I can't really see this being successful. Apple i known for over priced hardware, and in the gaming market the hardware in known for being under priced to move software. If Apple does come out with a console they would have to go down the path that the Wii went down and I don't think Apple could hang with Nintendo.

@below: You actually said that... You do realize that you have one bubble because your a huge fanboy yourself, right?

EDIT: You calling me a moron is actually funny. You fanboys have this allusion that there is a conspiracy against 360 fans on this site. You talk as though your a gamer but all you do is talk sh*t about the PS3. That is why you don't have bubbles. If you would have logical criticisms of the PS3 you wouldn't lose your bubbles, but you fail to add anything constructive or insightful to any conversation your apart of.

I'm not loyal to anything other than God and my family, I just use my PS3 more and prefer it to my 360 mainly because my 360 is a launch model and has a ton of problems. I enjoy both consoles and tend to use my PS3 more because I want to stretch out how long I can use it before it craps out on me. Am I a fanboy when I talk about how good Mass Effect 2 is or how I enjoyed Bungies new approach the game design with ODST and Reach? Or when I talk about how I loved the first Gears of War and Prey and Crackdown? Or how I can't wait to get my hands on Metro 2033 or Conviction?

Frankly Thom was a making joke and your blind bias shows that you can't see that. Fanboys in general are annoying and narrow minded, fanboys like yourself. The fact that you thin one group is worse then the other shows how blind you really are.

EvilBlackCat5590d ago (Edited 5590d ago )

"You think fanboys are bad now?

Apple fanboys are the worst of the worst"

-NO OOOHHH NO

-PS3 loyalist are way worst than them

if apple jump in this sh1t... bye bye Sony PS

sorry disagree all you want but its like that

the 1st to die because of them >> PSP <<

@ the moron above

NO i only have one bubble because i dont gives a fnck about PS3 loyalist like you

but i really dont gives a fnck about Apple, MS, Sony and Nintendo because in this sh1t i follow the games i like and not the consoles.

jamesgtaiv5590d ago

Looks like a mix between a 360 and a trash can. I hope they keep that design.

nveenio5590d ago

THAT'S NOT EVEN WHAT PACHTER SAID!!! The author of this article blatantly left our the word "IF". This was purely hypothetical speculation. Apple is not releasing a console that is intended to compete with the 360/PS3...just like the iPod/iPhone was not released or intended to compete with the PSP/DS.

I reported this. This is the stupidest and most unprofessional article I've read in a long time...and that includes flame baiters.

BuZzz Killington5590d ago

someones aliitle to c%cky cause they wont the portable music player war.... game console division is going to eat apple alive they have the worst track record for decently affordable products......not to much theyre conputers cant even play games lol...like the ps3 and the 360 dont get viruses so apple cant play that card...so i really dont see how theyre going to succeed....

Oner5590d ago (Edited 5590d ago )

I see XDF and EvilBlackCat have a bad case of selective memory (seems a bit of a common occurance with "certain gamer types") and for some reason can't seem to remember how bad it was on N4G a few years ago with MS supporters...

Sorry if you can't handle the truth nor want to admit it to yourselves. But the fact is truth is the truth and it's all here in B&W for all to see if they want to go searching for the proof for verification.

@ Al Bundy ~ Priceless comment. Agree + Bubble...you deserve it ;)

fear885590d ago

They pride themselves on not getting viruses and having top of the line computer technology but my dell mini still manages to run OSX Snow Leopard and cost 30% of what those idiots would pay. And to make matters worse, If I were to put a "certain" cd in their mac, they would be on their knees crying.

Sheikh Yerbouti5590d ago

Real Mac Fanatics are that way because they are rich and like a boutique computer for a little conspicuous consumption. Or they are creatives who don't want to even pretend they're tech savvy geeks. I don't think either will translate into gaming.

And when Microsoft and its 3rd party demonstrated Windows 7 for our IT group here Indiana, they ran it on parallel on a MacBook. Mac's been running Windows for a while now...at times better than a PC. Goes both ways.

silverbeld5590d ago

'Apple Set to Release New Console, Will Rely Solely On Third Parties For Software Says Pachter'

If this is true, then they don't stand a chance. They will not survive the console war.

We all know developers are lazy. Porting games are crap. Exclusive games will make developers too get too the max for the console they working on. It will always looking better then port games.

And what makes you want too buy a console that only got multiplats. You will miss Gears off war, God of war, Garnturismo, zelda etc.

I hope Apple will make they're own exclusives. More consoles on the market better for the consumers.

Monkey5215590d ago

Since when do people take Patcher seriously? This guy makes the most ridiculous claims ever that are almost always wrong.

madpuppy5590d ago

from gaming. that is all we need, hipster douche bags talking up the shiny, low powered, OVERPRICED hunk of crap loaded with enough DRM to choke a sperm whale.

tplarkin75590d ago

Patcher is right, except that hardware is a money loser. Apple would have to go the route of the Wii to make profit from hardware. Then Patcher says that Apple can't compete with Nintendo. So, I don't see the motive for Apple to get into the home console market.

Arnon5589d ago

Great... just what we need. Apple fanboys.

Is it going to cost $3000?

mal_tez925589d ago

More useless than the iPad.

Will probably cost 2 grand as well

5589d ago
PITTBULL835589d ago

and it will cost a 1000 dollars for an 8 gig,1200 16 gig and 1500 for a 32 gig lol.

Millah5589d ago

This is entirely just baseless speculation without even any kind of rumor to back it up.

Knowing the way Apple and Steve Jobs operates, its really unlikely Apple will release a true gaming system in the way of PS3 or 360. The way Apple sees things, is they already have the iPhone OS platform to fuel games development, so they wouldn't see a reason to step into the industry 100 percent with a dedicated console.

However, its a lot more likely that we'll see Apple put the iPhone OS platform on the Apple TV and an SDK alongside it to create applications for it in the app store. Thats probably the closest we'll see to Apple releasing a home gaming console.

@ Pirate Thom lol, you might have a point there lol. It would be interesting to see a three-way war amongst Sony, Microsoft and Apple fans.

Although I still strongly believe the fanboy drizzle is just that: drizzle, nonsense, childish. It'd still be interesting though. ; )

Software_Lover5590d ago

Some of those guys really take that stuff to heart. When they curse and type they are really pissed. And when they are hurt they probably shed tears for real. Just sad really.

mastiffchild5589d ago

What's REALLY damn sad about it is they're blind to the damage they do in ensuring a divided gaming community where it's all too easy for lazy and untalented devs to pull scam after scam on us all. They even hurt themselves by playing their hilarious point scoring Reindeer games and don't realise it!

How on earth can holding a faceless corporation higher in their hearts and minds do anything other than serve the whims of a greedy, money leeching industry? Backing one of the major players at the expense of your fellow gamer, and ultimately themselves, is a road to nowhere to me but it still goes on regardless of sense and regardless of what their chosen companies inflict upon us all. It needs to stop and is way more harmful to us than most would like admitting, imho.

AngryTypingGuy5589d ago

Yeah, I don't think it'll succeed if it relies only on third party software...unless of course there's something really unique about it that customers HAVE to have.

Is this the mystery platform that Sonic 4 will be on? I was hoping it would be the Dreamcast 2.

I'm surprised Google hasn't entered the console market by now. It'll probably be only a matter of time before they do.

user8586215590d ago (Edited 5590d ago )

This might be a little far fetched, but imagine the apple tv was the console and the ipod/iphone were the controllers o_0!!!!

Its possible, but will it happen? o_0

This is very much a “dummy who volunteers themselves to the middle” comment.

The real enemy is a common phrase, people use it all the time.

Calm down.

jambola8d ago

i'm very calm
you seem very upset however

You don't seem calm at all. Don't take this so seriously, you seem desperate responding to others defending your opinion that lacks any value or critical thought.

ABizzel17d ago (Edited 7d ago )

DEI was never the problem and it was an ignorant take to begin with.

DEI is why games like Kena Bridge of Spirits, South of Midnight, and Ghost of Tsushima exist.

DEI is why we have a huge resurgence in Japanese, Chineses, and Korean developers producing games like Stellar Blade, Black Myth, and why Nintendo & Sony exist.

DEI is why more and more games have HUGE accessibility options with both Sony and MS fully behind this.

DEI was never a bad thing, the entire purpose of DEI is representation of all people, genders, disabilities, etc…

The problem was people used DEI as a default derogatory term to describe what they believed was forced representation, which allowed colorist, racist, sexist, misogynist, homophobic, and xenophobic fools to run away with the negative DEI narrative.

jambola7d ago

you don't get to decide other people's motivations

Executives seem to often have an obsession with perpetual revenue growth. There is always a finite amount of consumers for a product regardless of growth. Additionally, over investment is another serious issue in gaming.

Killer2020UK8d ago

The fact that they also rarely have any real expertise in game development compounds things. They'll look at what's been successful elsewhere, lack the knowledge to properly understand why they have been successful and then force a team to 'reproduce' their badly interpreted idea of that success.

We see it so often with sequels to games that were successful too. The team are left well alone, they have a break through hit and all of sudden the money men descend on the IP and completely railroad the dev team's ideas. Usually winds up being 'make the same game but MORE'

LoveSpuds7d ago

This is true throughout all of the corporate and public sector organisations to be honest. CEO's generally move amongst the corporate world without any need to have experience of a particular industry, they simply need to rely on their senior leadership credentials. A CEO of a retail giant will just as easily transition to a CEO role in the energy sector for example.

Not defending CEOs here to be clear, I think it's a huge part of the reason the western world is so fucked up. CEOs don't need to care about the sector they work in, in fact it's better if they don't care if they want to screw everyone to make profits.

GhostScholar8d ago

Companies don’t hire executives to break even. If the goal is breaking even then why start the company in the first place.

Soy8d ago

That's understood; it's getting record profits and expecting to always beat those record profits, and seeing anything less as a total failure. Then they lay people off and raise prices to reach those record profit levels again, just to sate shareholders. It's setting expectations way too high just to spike share prices, then inevitably falling short. It's feeling entitled to being more successful than everyone else. It's the CEOs doing all this to boost their own bonuses.

ABizzel17d ago

Growth benefits the company’s profits and therefore the company’s stock if publicly traded, which pleases the shareholders making them more and more rich, which is why Growth is always at the forefront of the vast majority of any publicly traded company.

More growth = More Money and the people at the top want all the money they can get. I can’t really blame them anyone would love to see their profits go from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands, to multi-millions it’s almost like a gambling addiction.

But it also goes to show someone how morals can go out the window for a lot of these people, and how amazing some CEOs are when they catch this early and provide a balance solution that takes complete care of their employees across the board while keeping the business sustainable IE: Insomniac Games ALWAYS on the best places to work list. The rest of the industry could learn.

jambola9d ago

honestly, the "real" enemy of gaming, is ourselves
if nobody bought horse armor, shitty dlc would have died almost overnight
if we stood firm and nobody bought games from companies that were bad with layoffs, it would be solved
we're the idiots supporting awful business practices, we are the ones enouraging it

TiredGamer8d ago

I think the reality that we don't want to convince ourselves of is that without the rise of "horse armor" and DLC, game budgets would have essentially stagnated (smaller teams/smaller games), or game prices would have risen much more dramatically than they have. There was an incessant drive for bigger worlds, infinite detail, and hundreds of hours of "gameplay" over the last two decades, that while perhaps a natural evolution of things, needed a suitable funding stream to accomplish.

HyperMoused7d ago

What...CEOs make tens of millions and that doesnt include SLT etc etc...we now have multiple editions of games, in game currency, MT's, battle passes.....and what do we get..worse game than what was coming out 20 years ago....dont drink the cool aid, its this nickel and dime crap that is absolutely leading us to gaming destruction.

senorfartcushion8d ago

This is the worst possible answer to this conundrum. Blaming the masses is blaming the only people who are constantly “told” to buy.

Consumers are the only ones not to blame here. People make their own choices all the time. Disney movies are bombing and DEInis being blamed. Has that been enough to put Disney out of business? No and it never will.

Christopher8d ago

Disagree. Businesses are able to do what they do because people are bad consumers and don't think critically about purchases. Disney got away with doing shit stuff for years and it's just the last year where people got tired of it. It's not like it didn't work for 5 years or so for Disney to do the things they've done. They'll just move onto another way to get people to see movies and it will be just as bad but more profitable until people wake up and realize it.

TiredGamer8d ago

Consumerism drives business behavior. It's not so much "blaming" as it is observing behavior. The point I'm making is that the direction that games have gone are driven by the spending. Consumers are spending on DLC and they are driving the expectation of more glitz and padded out (lengthier) games. If they continue to pay, they will continue to drive that direction until a threshold is reached that forces a change in behavior.

senorfartcushion8d ago

Corporate advertising is the most powerful force on the planet.

This is N4G for god sake, every day there are arguments between people who are Team Xbox and Team PlayStation because they’ve been convinced that having an identity built on paying money to Sony and Microsoft matters more than having one as individual gamers who can play whatever they want.

And THEN we get to the corporate advertising part: to play whatever you want is to sink MORE into the advertising pits, making it so that you can more than one specific product.

jambola8d ago

ah you're right
they were told to buy it, it's clearly impossible to avoid that
if enough people stopped supporting, it would stop
disney not stopping would only be because enough people didn't stop

Agreed. I’ve been saying for years, announce you won’t be buying the upcoming game because of the practices of the previous game, then you only have to stick to your guns once, see how quickly things change for the better.

We have to unite in what we shouldn’t purchase.

jambola8d ago

just imagine a world, fifa came out worse, nobody buys the next one until they see proof it's better and stick to it
or games being forced online for single player and nobody buys it

Greed and greedy people have and always will be the main issue for everything wrong in the world. Everything is a product to be exploited for monetary gain. Even when there are things that could help progress us along for the sake of making our lives easier that thing must be exploited for monetary gains. Anything that tells you otherwise is propaganda to make you complicit.

coolfool8d ago

I've never thought "DEI" (although the way most people use it doesn't match it's real definition) is the problem with games. Good games have continued to be good when they have a diverse cast, and likewise, bad games have continued to be bad. There isn't a credible example I've seen where a diverse cast has been the direct cause of a game being bad.
