Halo 3 Multiplayer Servers Will Survive Halo Reach's Launch

Kotaku: Once Halo Reach hits, bringing with it a brand new multiplayer experience and separate servers, does that mean Halo 3's multiplayer servers will be shut down?

"I dont think we would pull the plug," said Brian Jarrard, Bungie's community director. "Halo 2 was the number one game until the Halo 3 lauch, and it was still supported until this April.

"I think it would be safe to say we wouldn't be investing so much time into doing massive matchmaking updates and then just turn (Halo 3 online support) off and walk away from it.

"Will we hope that people will migrate to Reach because it represents all of the good things from Halo 3 but better and more so? Sure, but I guarantee that there are hardcore gamers, like the pros who make their livelihoods off of playing Halo 3, who might take awhile to move over.

"I cant imagine a world where Halo Reach and Halo 3 don't coexist."

The story is too old to be commented.

Halo 2's have survived untill Microsoft shuts down XBOX ORIGINAL LIVE... and even then expect xlink games.

Isn't this news kinda obvious. Why would they close the Halo 3 server while still in the same generation???

Same here, I played a bit yesterday and they were about 250 000 people playing...

They have, what, 100,000 players still playing #3?

This game wont die. Three Call of Duty's maybe outranked it, but the 6 digit figure is always strong.

And why wouldn't it? The game is a fantastic package of split screen, online, co-op, and movie theater joy.

Bungie's constant support is like the gift that keeps on giving.

Halo 3 really is the greatest MP this gen IMO-- the community is strong, Bungie keeps them well fed, and the game is chock full of content that no other game has yet to touch

Bungie are some smart mofos. They know what they're doing.

Last time I was on over the weekend it was 200,000+.

SixZeroFour3792d ago

usually 200k+ UU's on at the same time, and about 800k+ UU's on within the day

Two totally different game genres, so your statement doesn't make any sense at all.

LEGENDARY PELON3792d ago (Edited 3792d ago )

On weekends, Halo 3 pops over +200,000 ppl online!
Thats a whole load of people considering that Halo 3 is 2+ years old!

But when Halo 3 came out, in it's first 24 hours, it clocked over 1,000,000 ppl playing at once!

Modern Warfare 2 didnt even do those numbers!

Why wouldn't this be the case for Halo 3 after Reach?

BeaArthur3792d ago

The only difference there is that MW2 is a disaster and MW was one of the best MP games of all time. Halo 3 is great and therefore no matter what Reach does there will still be people that play Halo 3. Although there would still be MW players even if MW2 wasn't such a mess, part of the reason MW is still popular is because people have abandoned MW2.
