Top 10 Japanese RPGs of All Time

"what will follow is a top 10 list of the best Japanese RPGs, shining examples of the JRPG genre done right. These games are proof that the JRPG genre is not, as a whole, stagnant and rigid, as these games in particular have addressed most, if not all, of the flaws that other articles points out as being supposedly endemic to the JRPG genre. The games on this list are just plain awesome, and the fact that they are JRPGs becomes irrelevant in the face of their quality. Not all Western gamers are closed-minded towards JRPGs; in terms of myself, I love the JRPGs that are "off-brand" so to speak, i.e. not part of the big name franchises such as Final Fantasy. So that is what this list will focus on, and thus will hopefully further my argument that you can find a great game in any genre on either side of the Pacific, if you look hard enough. Too bad the author didn't like Final Fantasy titles, otherwise 4 or 5 of the games in the top 10 would be from Square Enix, still I'm looking forward to playing some of these titles before FF13 comes out next month.....

Because the fact that a classic Playstation brand: Final Fantasy XIII is coming to Xbox 360 in just over a month I'm guessing the author wanted to list the top 10 JRPGs across all gaming platforms, which makes for a much more interesting list....

This list lost every credibilty it had when games like chrono trigger and secret of mana didnt make it but star ocean and disgeae as much as i love both those series they arent top10 material. There are also games like DQ8 and legend of the dragoons that come to mind.

Front Misson is average and it is strategy

Fire Emblem is strategy

FF tactics is strategy

Disgaea is strategy

Demon's Souls was made by a Japanese game dev but it is more like a wrpg than jrpg

are the only real jrpg on that list. And when he says "Japanese rpg" does he mean "made by Japanese developers" or "Japanese style"? Considering that half of his games are from a sub-genre it is obvious that he's not much of a jrpg lover nor a fan of Sony or Nintendo.

This is like me making a list of the best shooters of all time and include Mass Effect.

At Godmars I'm guessing because they aren't fanboys and have played on more than one console.And you should also check out OXCGNs (xbox site) review of uncharted 2, where they gave it an awesome score. Some people do know brilliant games when they see them no matter what console.

They're still speaking primarily to a 360-only audience who probably haven't touched a PS2 much less PS1 or Dreamcast.

Here's hoping that Final Fantasy XIII will be sitting atop this list next year.....hope that game is so good!
