I was getting tired of the androgynous boys like Reks. Looking back, FF12 would actually have been a little more interesting if Reks had been a girl.

If Reks had been a girl they could have pulled more emotion out of the storyline. Imagine her life as she dealt with growing up in the slums and then losing her protection when her brother died. Add to that the way she had to be to tough to look out not only for herself but also for the other kids. All the while, she kept a dream of a better life of freedom as a sky pirate burning. That would have made FF12 more interesting than the story of the comical sidekick/wannabe pirate boy.

Anyway, it doesn't matter if the lead is male or female. As long as the story of the lead character is worth growing attached to, then it's all good.
