While there have always been services like Blizzard's battle.net, it seems online play has grown in sophistication, depth, and size. More people play for more hours a week, and people connect. They join Steam Groups, guilds, and clans. You learn about people you'll never meet, their fears, their kids and their jobs. There's definitely a gaming culture, and it's at its most vibrant and alive in online communities."
