An Overview of Video Game Nudity

Nudity in video games has always been a bit of a strange subject since video games are often associated with children. So by logic, nudity and adult images have no place in a video game, right? Well, the video game community knows that just isn't true. Video gaming has come a long way from the safe images of Mario getting a peck on the cheek from the Princess, and instead have now become very adult themed. Games like Dead or Alive have a large focus on scantily clad women (especially the volleyball series) and physics engines have also been used to simulate the movement of breasts. Then there are games like Leisure Suit Larry and BMX XXX where nudity is prevalent to the point of being ridiculous. But when does our technology take nudity too far? When do video games go from dramatic to just plain silly with nudity?

I think one of the problems with nudity is that many people still think that all games are supposed to be meant for children. But really, they are like any other form of entertainment. Obviously, there are movies for children and adults, so why not games for children and adults? Parents complaining about nudity in a M-rated game is like complaining about nudity in a porno. These things are meant for adults (which is why we have the ratings system), so there is no reason that adult themes should be a problem.

SixZeroFour5628d ago

agreed...you hit it exactly, as long as its rated correctly (M for mature) parents shouldnt be complaining if their children is exposed to it while playing an M rated game...it would be totally the parents fault for allowing their child to play an M rated game

PoSTedUP5628d ago

nudity belongs in games that suite it. for example: heavy rain is a real game with a real deep story, so i expect it to be realistic. i am far past wanting to play a game with a bunch of unecessary naked girls running around just for my enjoyment. imo. for a mature game and a mature situation, i kind of expect it, it makes the game more realistic.

xabmol5628d ago

You shut yer mouth! It's never the parents fault! EVER!!

I have never seen a justifiable reason to be against nudity in M rated games. First of all, any parent who complains should point their finger back at themselves, because I'll bet 9/10 times they buy the game without looking into it. Plus, I never saw what was so wrong about pixelated bewbs. The internet is like 99% porn, but if little junior sees a fake nipple in his game all hell breaks loose and the game is banned in 14 different countries. I just could never understand it.

moe845628d ago

"M" rated no longer stands for Mature. It stands for dumb-sh!t parents who don't care enough to do their research, all 30 seconds of it. These are probably the same parents who took their children to see movies like Watchmen. Sure it's based on comic/graphic novel. But once that blue dong starts to fly it's a whole different experience. Flame-throwing orgasms ftw?

Go Gaming Giant5628d ago

I think nudity in games is ok, especially if they are rated M. I see no difference then R rated movies.

Age of Conan had nudity for no other reason then to have nudity. Good PR move over at Funcom :)

I could definitely see a Bayonetta/Dante game. Imagine them initially battling each other before eventually teaming up to take on the big baddies. Now, imagine what their child(ren) would be like.

-Foxtrot135d ago (Edited 135d ago )

Bayonetta and Dante I could see but even then with how their lore differs it's a hard sell. For the others...I just can't see it at all.

I feel he's just saying whatever comes to him online

jwillj2k4135d ago

Same universe doesn’t mean same world or galaxy

SeTTriP135d ago

Bayonetta is a witch who enter contracts with demons for power and Dante is a demon, not really hard to connect.

They could even write in an alliance between the umbra witches and sparda.

-Foxtrot135d ago

On the surface yeah but the actual lore the two games have given us if you go into it...not so much.

micdagoat19135d ago

would be great if switch 2 upgrades resolution and frame rate on bayonetta 2

Absolutely loved this game. Don't know why it went under the radar with so many people.

Cacabunga138d ago (Edited 138d ago )

Was outshadowed by GOW3 it was a bad decision to release it at the same time because EA was counting on a push from xbox players. The game was DOA. I never played it

darthv72138d ago

....that's a you problem for not playing it, but the game wasn't DOA. It was very widely revered. The story was to continue in the sequel and the EA decided to focus on other projects. That wasn't the fault of the game and/or GoW.... it was the fault of EA and not wanting to invest in the team behind it.

Do yourself a favor and play it. If you have an XBO or Series X, you can find a cheap 360 disc as it's BC. It still hols up exceptionally well still to this day.

Cacabunga138d ago

Darth

It was suicide mission to release it the same day as gow3. A massive majority of ps3 skipped it.
Nothing to do with the game itself, it’s EA who didn’t manage and bet wrong

Cacabunga137d ago

Darth

Lol I just read this
“it was the fault of EA and not wanting to invest in the team behind it.”

Did you know that this same studio who didn’t get investment from EA who delivered Dead Space 1-2-3 and Battlefield Hardline? 😆

Popsicle137d ago (Edited 137d ago )

Game was loaned to me and I never booted it because GoW3 was getting all of my attention at the time. After GoW3 I had no desire to even try Dante’s Inferno because I was ready to move on to a different type of game. Not saying Dante is a bad game. It may be great. It just didn’t get to it.

darthv72137d ago (Edited 137d ago )

@caca, what I mean by team are the guys who actually worked on it. The ones who did this game are not the same ones who worked on dead space. They may all work at visceral, but they are in different teams.

So it really was about EA choosing not to continue on with Jonathan knight and his crew and instead turn their focus on the upcoming Dead Space 2 which was from a different team.

A lot of people think a developer is just that and is not made up of different teams for different projects. The sequel was to expand on the story further. They had all kinds of new ideas all story boarded and ready to go. EA just had other plans.

jwillj2k4137d ago

Not out shadowed but written off as a gow clone by multiple magazines, howrver in reality was a darker game entirely.

Came out around time of God of War and Devil may Cry, got lost in the ether.

ShwaaMan138d ago (Edited 138d ago )

I think it was a couple of factors,
1. Everyone was anxiously waiting for God of War 3 to release(myself included), so we could see what the Santa Monica Studio were going to accomplish with the mighty PS3.
2. It was such a direct ripoff of the GoW formula right down to the button prompts, (such as clicking L3 & R3 to activate your ultimate) .
Now, of course lots of games borrow and evolve ideas, but this was like a carbon copy with a different skin and not quite as good or pretty.
3. It was cool to look at, it played fine, good artistic design and everything, but our standards were astronomically high after GoW 1 & 2… and it just wasn’t anything to write home about.

That being said, I have been wanting to revisit it for years.

darthv72138d ago

It's probably the best GoW clone ever. Better than even 3 to some extent. The story may be loosely based on the poem but the liberties they took with the various levels of hell were pretty entertaining.

Definitely worth playing through again. It also helps that it plays even better on an XBO/ Series.

cluclap137d ago (Edited 137d ago )

Better than 3 to NO extent dude. I get it, you liked the game, but it was objectively worse than GOW3 in every way. I was one of the few who played both at the time as I couldn't get enough of GOW formula, and i liked it as a straight-to-dvd kind of game, but it did nothing better than GOW3 my guy.

Inverno138d ago

I think with a few live service features EA could revive the IP and turn it into a million dollar franchise.

Christopher138d ago

Look, EA is dumb, but they can still read comments on random aggregate sites. Let's not help them with more bad ideas.

Christopher138d ago

1+ million sold back in that day wasn't underrated.
