Review: Mass Effect 2 - Joystiq

Unlike most of the Joystiq staff, I wasn't in love with the first entry in the series. Oh, I could see the promise, but I had a hard time getting past the clunky combat, the terrible vehicle sequences and a damnably irksome inventory system. But in a weird way, I was the very best person to review the sequel, because BioWare has gutted the original framework, doing away with everything that didn't work and replacing it with something vibrant, something engaging. All the while, the developers have expanded on the sweeping yet personal scope of the first game that made such an impression on so many.

The resulting concoction is the best game BioWare has ever made and the best action RPG in history.

ME2 has cemented itself as THE rpg of this gen

all other rpgs are fighting for 2nd place

Bobbykotickrulesz5201d ago

Oh boy! That's quite an amazing title for a game to recieve.

Too bad all the RPGs this gen have been pure sh*t so far. Oblivion is probably the best one out to date and that's just pathetic.

I'll refrain from calling this the best RPG in history until I actually play one worth a sh*t. So congrats, Mass Effect 2 is better than Mass Effect, but still crappy in terms of RPGs when compared to classics like Final Fantasy 7.

Major why don't you go jack hoff somewhere and quit talking nonsense.

Bobbykotickrulesz5201d ago

Nice.

The Xbox finally has a game worth playing...

It's been awhile old friend, but I'm finally going to put down my PS3 controller and actually play you, 360.

heroprotagonist5201d ago

You act like there haven't been any good games to play on the 360 and that is utter bollocks. I have had more games than I can handle to tell you the truth. Mass Effect 2 only makes the situation worse.

Bobbykotickrulesz5201d ago

Halo and Fable are basically the best exclusives the 360 has to offer.

Gears of War is laughable. Mass Effect was decent, and now Mass Effect 2.

I haven't played my 360 since Fable 2 came out, and what an utter let down that game was.

"I'm finally going to put down my PS3 controller and actually play you, 360."

"I started playing games yesterday" the List... Meh!

How about a few RPGs that deserve some love instead?
1 - Alpha Protocol - Now on GOG
2 - else Heart.Break()
3 - Shadowrun Trilogy
4 - Wasteland 2
5 - UnderRail
6 - Tyranny
7 - Torment: Tides of Numenera

And for a bonus game that flew under the radar:
8 - Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden

Loved Alpha Protocol in all it's glorious jank. Great game.

SimpleSlave17d ago (Edited 17d ago )

Not only glorious jank, but the idea that the story can completely change depending on what you do, or say, or side with, makes it one of the most forward thinking games ever. The amount of story permutation is the equivalent of a Hitman level but in Story Form. And it wasn't just that the story changed, no, it was that you met completely new characters, or missed them, depending on your choices. Made Mass Effect feel static in comparison.

Alpha Protocol was absolutely glorious, indeed. And it was, and still is, more Next Gen than most anything out there these days. In this regard at least.

Pity.
