Borderlands Grinds Past Sales Milestone

IGN writes: "Gearbox Software's Borderlands -- half first-person shooter and half loot-based role-playing game -- won't appeal to mom and dad any time soon, and that's the point. From the onset, the title was designed specifically for traditionalist players -- the so-called hardcore -- in a move that had some pundits promising lackluster sales, especially given the license was unestablished. But the NPD Group, which tracks videogame software sales, released its holiday figures last week and the results are indisputable: Borderlands is a hit.

The title, which shipped for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 last October, surpassed a publishing milestone in December, toppling one million units sold cumulatively -- or, broken down by hardware, about 800,000 copies for Microsoft's system and another 245,000 for Sony's. The title also charted in the Top 10 best-selling PC games during its debut month. Additionally, sources tell IGN that Borderlands has been downloaded more than 100,000 times digitally since its release. A fantastic performance for a relatively unknown license made for a single demographic. "

I'm glad they changed the art style. At first, i didn't think about getting it because it looked like every other game, but the new art style made me take a look at it.

Yea I think the artstyle really helped change things, had it looked like it originally did perhaps it would have been turned off from it.

Plus some of the humor is just made better with it! (like 9 Fingers :P)

The digital numbers are interesting, I guess the digital market isn't as big as originally thought since Borderlands was selling pretty well on Steam, D2D, etc.

I love borderlands. I didn't know how I would feel about it, but it's definitely a GOTY game. I am addicted to it like crack. It's funny a hell, and both the story and art style is awesome. Co-op is asskicking tough and super fun. So congrats Gearbox on a phenomenal game and teaching Fallout 3 how to put out quality DLC in a timely manner.

Story is crap but if looting is your thing, don't miss out on this one. One of the very few games I got on PC instead of PS3 and I'm very glad I did as I've had all kinds of fun experimenting with wacky custom weapons.

Good game. I didn't get it straight away as I didn't know if I'd like it or not. After a month or so of it been out I saw it for nearly half the price (new) and decided to get it. Glad I did, It is a lot better than I thought.

why people disagree with you over wanting a better graphic card? here's an agree for you. same situation here, but i need a new system altogether, not just a new graphic card. i have a pentium 4 3ghz with an nvidia 8500gt, and despite that borderlands ran quite well on it. i put it all on low settings, yet the game still looks nice and ran fairly smooth with the occasional framerate drops.

edit: great, even i got a disagree now. do you have some kind of history with the forumers here that anyone who agrees with you gets a disagree straight away? i'm pretty new here.

This game kicks ass. More people need to go out there and buy it to support these guys, it's one of the funnest co-op games out there.

The only thing that sucks about the game is a lot of things that were planned never made it in, but that just means Borderlands 2 will the that much more awesome. =P

Gearbox is a great developer. Didnt they make the Brothers in Arms series? Another excellent franchise that doesnt go the typical shooter route, loved the flanking tactics on that game. Borderlands is probably more conventional shooter, but the way they have integrated RPG and loot gathering into the shooter mechanics makes it interesting.

Because you won't have one after you start playing it... lol. One of the most underrated addictive games I've played in quite sometime. Also, good quality title on both consoles, devs did a good job.

This will amuse my non game-playing children (18 & 21). I just finished the main story yesterday with a mate (a father of 3 teenagers all 14+).
