How to Kill a Franchise

Seeing a beloved franchise crumble into a defunct mishmash of horrid ideas and misconstrued concepts seems to happen all too often in this day and age of money grabbing bottom-liners. A great game is relatively easy to create in comparison to what it takes to sustain that greatness throughout an entire series. Some franchises are great at keeping a high level of quality, whereas others take a swan dive into the shallow end of the pool. It might not be so bad when a company makes a one-hit-wonder that then flops, but when a series has been in our hearts for generations of systems and then takes a downturn in quality, that's when we have to turn our gaze to the publishers responsible.

Decent list of games that need rescuing from their own developers.

Madden had a very deserving spot on this list.

Splinter Cell doesn't belong their.

Tomb Raider has had a nice revival with the 360's Legends and PC's Anniversary.

No way is Tomb Raider close to what she use to be or could be though. Far as splinter cell. I think they don't like the evolution the series is going through. Probably would've been better to start a different series or something.

Really enjoyed Legend and half way through Anniversary at the moment ...

Definately a step in the right direction ...

So, I think it;s a little harsh for Tomb Raider to be on the list ...

"The look of a game will be passed by as newer games come down the pipeline, but classic gameplay will always be fun to pick up and play."

I agree with that comment. As for Splinter Cell, I will always buy the game (I really like the series) but if something had to be done...drop the Shanghai studio (at least for a while).

Splinter Cell: 9.6 (Montreal)
Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow: 9.5 (Shanghai, not a bad game though)
Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory: 9.9 (Montreal, highest scoring game on original xbox and had the most amazing graphics of that time)
Splinter Cell: Double Agent: 9.0 (Shanghai)

The Shanghai studio seems to be bringing the series down, shown by these ratings from oxm.

i wouldn't say that the Shanghai studio is bringing the series down, but rather that the Montreal studio rocks !!! Can't wait for Assassin's creed ^_^

Dr Pepper4773d ago

True, the Montreal studio does rock! However, that doesn't change what I said. Since the Montreal studio is so good, the Shanghai studio can't keep up with the quality. Therefore, it's bringing the series lower than what it could be. I did like the Pandora Tomorrow campaign though, the levels were pretty cool.

Good list but the games one last page (Splinter Cell & Tomb Raier) DO NOT belong to dead franchises. SC5: Conviction is coming as a 360 exclusive with lots of hype and need gameplay and look. And Tomb Raider was just revived by Legend and Anniversary is just released with acceptable sales.
But I agree that they should stop releasing every year.
And the deadest game there is Sonic. SEGA, please... Make a true good Sonic game.

Diselage4773d ago

I don't think any or at least most of these are dead but they are almost all on a downward slope. Tomb Raider is coming back but it wasn't exactly a triumphant return. Splinter Cell is probably a bit off.

Good list for the most part, some games like Splinter Cell don't belong on it but Conviction looks great, but I do see the point about how a yearly release could kill it off, games like that should come every other year IMO.
