Exploit in Modern Warfare 2 allows griefers to award negative XP and reset ranks

An exploit discovered in Modern Warfare 2 for Xbox 360 is allowing people to reset their opponents' ranks back to 1 and award negative experience.

If you own a PS3 the problems are less noticable. I have no reason why. I believe it has something to do with someone modyifying the MW2 disk itself something that is diffucult on PS3.

It's like they've totally dropped support for the game and are just rolling in money. They are screwing over there own consumers. Pay $60 to work for hours to get to a decent rank only to have it all ruined? F*ck you, IW. This may very be the first and last Call of Duty game that I have purchased.

And by the way, this isn't an isolated case. There are reports from various users and places that this same reset hack has affected them. And there are servers where the opposite is true: where each kill gives you millions of XP and you run at the speed of light.

I think the reason you see it less on the PS3 is the demographics on each system and that the Xbox is a the moment where the majority of competitive gaming is. So you have people with big egos a lot.

I sometimes wonder if it's Infinity Ward's fault or Microsoft's fault for having such an easily hackable system. I do see MW2 glitches happening on the PS3 platform but it's far less prevalent than the 360 platform.

Yeahhh, I'm gonna go ahead and disagree with you on that one. It's obviously true that the 360 is the console of choice for FPS games, most people would agree with that...right? On the 360 (MW2) it is both easy & difficult to get kills. It really depends on whether you get into a game with a bunch of little kids or a really good clan or somethin. I have to say that whenever I play MW2 (same with MW1) I absolutely dominate, I'm talkin 35-5 K/D ration almost every time, and I do NOT camp. Of course I will get people that disagree with me on this, but I think the people that play MW2 on PS3 don't usually play FPS games and aren't as good. This isn't a rip on the PS3 at all, I love mine...I just never do as well when I play with the 360, even with the more friendly FPS controller...

Bugs and exploitations are going to be prevalent in any wildly popular game. It's simply a matter of time and numbers before any game gets exploited. When u have millions of brilliant egotistical kids competing with one another eventually someone is going to find a way to have an unfair advantage. Every extremely popular game has had its share of hacks and glitches. No offense to anyone (can't believe i have to say that), but if enough people took Uncharted2's multiplayer as serious as the kids that play mw2 then even it would eventually be exploited for someone's benefit.

If you are fed up, pick up a ps3 and grab MAG on the 26th..... the Beta on this game was sweet and will easily give Modern Warfare Deuce a run for it's money. The original creators of SOCOM are behind this....thinking it will be an awesome game with a lot of replay value. Grabbing it day 1.

That's sort of true. Most of the major bugs and glitches should be fixed in BETA TESTING. They have beta tests for a REASON. They're not just demos or something like that.

Not to mention patches. From what I see, IW has said nothing and done nothing. You can say "every game has it's glitches" but that doesn't justify what MW2 is showing off.

So IW would let them keep everything they got BY cheating, but only take away their rank? Think about how illogical THAT sounds.

Couple the fact about them only being forced to fix the Javelin glitch because Sony wasn't going to cover their asses like MS was going to, and that makes what you said even MORE illogical.

I think the dumbest thing of all is that in the second video, the folks who uploaded the clip decided to place a pop-up over the video that reads:

"Don't quit playing MW2. It will be fixed soon. 402 has been getting posts about this on his twitter. Just avoid 10th lvl 70s. Don't go play another game, just enjoy MW2 as best you can."

And if you release a game to the millions and millions of people who all spend a crazy amount of time on the game and a fair chunk genuinely go out their way to break it what do you expect to happen.

No beta test could have stopped this, maybe a couple of the glitches but nothing like this. Viral glitches like this one here are started thanks to Modded Consoles, and this you cannot blame on IW. If you knew absolutely anything about software development you'd know it's quite possible to say absolutely every single 360 and PS3 game will contain bugs/glitches, it's just a matter of finding them, be them big or small.

I haven't seen any mention of this at all yet, but I have been in games on the PS3 version where people are getting just 4 or 5 kills and are then able to call in the AC-130, and then call in their other things after it's over, or at the same time..

Another thing ruining the game is that as soon as each game starts almost every single person goes and sits in one spot and basically stays there the whole game, until they're forced to move to another spot and sit there.. or they are some retard who just sneaks around the whole map knifing the entire team since they're all completely stupid and don't pay attention.

That, mixed with anywhere from 10-100% of my bullets not registering is just making me hate this game. Oh, and almost literally every single time I look one way and turn to check the opposite way, someone always ends up being in the same freaking spot I was just looking. Really, the exact time I turn my guy they come around a corner or whatever just out of my field of view. I don't understand how that happens, it's almost as if the damn game is set up against me.

I'm really starting to get pissed off at this game and the players. I love the game, I really do, but there is always something that makes me not want to play it anymore.

I'm running into too much bs every single match I play, I don't know how much longer I'll be able to put up with it.

The glitches keep getting worse each time now then the last but with all these glitches that keep appearing the only thing I ever ran into was the javelin glitch. Never experienced any other glitches. It seems that they happen a lot in S&D games, FFA, hardcore. I always stick with team DM and never run into these glitches.
Even if they ran beta I really think there would still be glitches. I'm sure some of them would have got picked up in the beta but were two months into the release now and each new glitch found keeps getting worse.

for the folks who made the video, file complaints about those players that griefed you and move on.

some of you folks need to realize one can cheat in any activity and stop trying to blow cheating in games out of proportion. You can't just passively shrug off this saying "yeah, people cheat..." yeah, glitches get exploited it, I see it in many, many games and for the most part it can be ignored. But this glitch causes OTHER players to have their game ruined.

What a horrible exploit that is though, resetting your opponents level to 1, what is there to gain from this? Nothing, its not just cheating, its malicious to another player and Infinity Ward should be ashamed with themselves for being utterly lazy in the development of this game.

as far as I can tell this game is no more exploitable than any other game, its just that there is more attention paid to it. There are exploits and glitchers in Killzone 2, Halo, Rainbow 6, Uncharted 2, Gears of War, Resistance, etc.

I'm not saying being a victim of glitchers does not suck, but I just dont see how IW has somehow done any more or less than any other dev when it comes to exploits.

I think we blame the wrong people, blame the glitchers not the devs. The devs responsibility is to patch in order to stop glitchers and IW has been doing just that, and there is no reason to think that IW wont fix this issue.

Personally, I think IW should of done the smart thing and had a few public beta's. You shouldn't release a game of this magnitude without testing it first.

Sure, glitches appear, we can agree on this and the people that exploit them are utter tools for doing so but developers should really put everything they have into getting the game right. This 'patch' generation is getting ridiculous. Glitches are expected but in one of the biggest games of '09? The game that had so much hype around it it sold 4million in 24 hours. Would I expect the amount of glitches that are being discovered in this game? No, but there they are. If IW fix it all and get it all together then good for them, but the fact remain they took the same route with Epic Games and released a glitched and bugged game.

Being able to patch a game is making developers lazy. I don't want to pick up a game for £40 only to find it plagued with glitches and bugs with the promise that "don't worry, we're looking into the issues". What the hell? Why was this available in a shop then? Get a beta out there and get it tested, espcially games like MW2 that replyability lie in its online mode.

A 10th Prestige player appears to have Administrative-like rights through the grief system to reset stats for any other MW2 player who they game with. I cannot find for the life of me why this would exist beyond lazy and/or sloppy work. This should not be allowed by anyone other than a IW server admin.

There is no way to verbally defend such shoddy work. Perhaps if IW didn't a braggart's attitude when developing this game, maybe they wouldn't made 1/3 of the mistakes that were so easily found/exploited a week to a month after release. Despite my comment below, IW shoulda had a beta, and took the delay if necessary.

Instead they ignored it and rushed the game to market to hit the holiday season window. It's a shame what $60 gets you nowadays. The way I see it, this is allowing me to focus on catching up on games I haven't played yet before games like Bad Company 2, Heavy Rain, and GOW3 come out. Without all of the MW2 headaches, how would I have had time to play gems like Assassin's Creed 2 and Borderlands?

It's not IW's fault. The way that this is done is through what is called the "JTAG" hack which allows the user to run unsigned code on the xbox. IW can't do anything about it this is Microsoft's fault.
