250GB Xbox 360 Elite and 250GB drive coming next?

Destructoid: There's nothing solid on this yet, but some signs out there seem to point to the current Xbox 360 Elite, the 120GB model, becoming extinct. Right now it seems that most retailers are out of stock on this model, including Walmart, Gamestop and Best Buy. Hell, Kotaku says that right now, GameStop is giving you a $50 gift card with the purchase of the Elite. Maybe they're trying to clear shelf space for something new. And this same disappearing act is happening to the separate 120GB hard disk. Just try finding one now.

I asked Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg about the hard drive specifically last week. I pointed out that it would be nice to have that 250GB hard drive from the Xbox 360 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 system separately as an upgrade.

250GB a welcome edition as long as the price is right. I know Microsoft will do the right thing on the pricing i have faith.

JussBlazn3199d ago (Edited 3199d ago )

149.99 for a 120gb, 299.99 for 250gb...might as well get a new console xD

RBdrift3199d ago

250GB! thanks,I'll take my 500GB HDD for my PS3 for $80 bucks.

Bot Smasha3199d ago

Of course you have faith you must love buying $200 plus HDD,S eh?

stb3199d ago (Edited 3199d ago )

@ rising
you sure have to have. u dont have other way...but since it still is a freaking 360, i wouldn't bother to shoot so high as getting one, these stuff just for it to rrod on me, no sir, i pass , better staying with the cheapest beginner edition.

Troll_Police3199d ago

If M$ charged $150 for a 120gb HDD then they will charge around $300 for a 250gb HDD. Ka-Ching!!!!

D4RkNIKON3199d ago (Edited 3199d ago )

I was coming here to say the same thing. You know they will over charge for this hardware. their last HDD was over $100. I am glad I don't mess around with xbox, paying for XBL is just something I can't bring myself to do.

Troll_Police3199d ago

^^^Great minds think alike.

Saaking3199d ago

HDD is seriously a rip-off for the 360. With 90 bucks I can get 500GB on my PS3, but I'd need like 200+ for 250 on the 360? Yea right!

Blaze9293199d ago

So first 4 comments are from users who likely don't even own/care about the 360....great huh?

Anyway, that's stupid to think MS would charge $300 for this. They just replace the "older" with a newer for the same price so if the 250GB HDD is true then it'll be for what the 120GB HDD retails for probably at $180. Just like they did with the Wireless Adapter upgrade and keeping it at $100.

I'm not saying these prices are fair, just saying it sure as hell won't be $ really, wtf?

Shang-Long3199d ago

thanks. bubbles for the help

xTruthx3199d ago

Even if they didn't care or own a 360, their right when it comes to the HDD price tag when comparing it with the competition. I know nothing official has been said of how much it will cost but I and I'm sure, many know it wont be cheap.

evrfighter3199d ago

Both console users get ripped's funny how you think otherwise

xTruthx3199d ago (Edited 3199d ago )

Care to explain? because we are talking about HDD's.

Edit: Btw, even if we weren't talking about HDD's, would you care to explain y both and which both systems get ripped off, because from my understanding there are currently 3 next gen system being produced and not 2. Care to share which are those 2 systems and explain in what way each one is getting ripped off ?

Arnon3199d ago (Edited 3199d ago )

If it's not a PC, you're getting ripped off. Period.

When looking for a new hard drive for the PS3 there are four key features you must be looking for:

1. 2.5" width- These are notebook hard drives and that size is what you are looking for. 3.5" desktop hard drives will not fit.

2. 9.5mm Height- This is normal but keep an eye out for drives that may be smaller or bigger because they will not fit.

3. 5400 RPM speed- Although the PS3 can handle the faster 7200RPM, you run the risk of overheating the system for a few milliseconds faster in loading time. The original drive that came with your console is 5400RPM so make sure the new one is as well.

4. MUST be Serial ATA (SATA)- The drive must be a SATA drive, other interfaces such as ATA or IDE will not have the correct connections to fit in the PS3.

5. The Hard Drive MUST run at 1.5 or 2.0 Gb/s (I cant remember exactly which one it is)

Yeah, it's a lot better than that achievement of failure that is the 360 HDD, but it's still restricted. I'm sure that's what evrfighter is referring to, since he's quite fond of the PC.

xTruthx3199d ago (Edited 3199d ago )

First of all... I am a PC gamer, have been for more years than evrfighter Im sure.

Second, we are talking about consoles not PC's.

Third, the only thing you need to worry about the ps3's HDD is that it has to be 2.5, the HDD running at 7200RPM will make the ps3 a little hotter yes, but if you go to the PS forum, you'll find people who have had it for months without any problems.

Fourth, you do know the 2.4 HDD are bound to be made close to those dimensions right ? .374" x 2.75" x 3.96". You do know the MOBO for the majority of laptops barely changes right? Desktop's is another thing.

Fifth, you do know that serial ATA is the most produced HDD right ? So I'm sure you wont have trouble finding one, because for portable computers is aether that or PATA, and PATA drives are rarely used be any major company's.

Sixth, "The Hard Drive MUST run at 1.5 or 2.0 Gb/s" you mean the data transfer rate ?

AKNAA3199d ago (Edited 3199d ago )

I just looked for a 320g SATA 2.5" 5400RPM Laptop HDD on amazon for $80(samsung HDD, awesome!!!). Nowhere near as complicated as you make it seem.
Btw, I don't really know much about computers other than facebook, youtub and msn:)...

@Evrfighter.... what other console are you referring to that's also getting ripped off besides the 360 owners?!

badz1493199d ago (Edited 3199d ago )

they'll get rid of the 120GB for good and replace them with 250GB and still sell them at $399. that would be wonderful!

EDIT: @Arnon, all HHDs are made standards! all SATA 2.5" drive will make it into any PS3! why the hell are you trying to imply that it's very hard to find a suitable replacement HHD for the PS3? it's just going to a store and look for a 2.5" SATA HDD and you're good! it's also less than likely for anybody to get it wrong because IDE HDD are rare now, and by that I mean really rare!

evrfighter3199d ago

Every time you buy a game for either the 360 or the ps3 you are being ripped off. Put some thought into it and you'll know what I'm talking about.

my pc gaming career began with Oregon trail and Myst.

AAACE53199d ago

If you guys don't care about the 360, why are you here?

And dude calls himself Troll Police... you must be a crooked cop!

Seriously, what are you expecting? If you say enough negative stuff about the 360 and MS being greedy, people will convert and get a Ps3!

News flash, i've listened to you guys and drunk the koolaid. I had my Ps3 since this past august and am now about to sell it because I realized that now that i've played the games I wanted to play, I see nothing coming out for it that interest me!

If you love the Ps3, more power to you! I may have to pay to play on XBL, but what I get is an experience that I enjoy! I rarely get laggy games, I can use my mic whenever I want to and not just in games, the interface is friendly and fast, and more importantly, people are still playing games I like!. On Ps3, I bought Killzone 2 and there was almost no one playing anymore. Uncharted 2 had less than 2500 people playing, Socom i'm lucky if I can get 6 people playing.

You can hate on the 360, but you should give it a try before you judge it! You may be shocked at how much simpler it is to do things on a 360 as opposed to a Ps3!

Arnon3199d ago (Edited 3199d ago )

"Sixth, "The Hard Drive MUST run at 1.5 or 2.0 Gb/s" you mean the data transfer rate ?"

I was referring to exactly what transfer rate was required for a PS3 drive, not what it meant.

It has to be a 2.5 with a 1.5-2.0 Gb/s transfer rate. Is that better? :V Also, you realize that running things hotter is a bad thing, right?... and third, the PC is a console. If it wasn't, then why is it always being brought up on this site?

By the way, for the people that are ragging on me, that was from a website. I was too lazy to care to quote anything... or type for that matter.

Cool stuff, but it still proves my point.

Nineball21123198d ago (Edited 3198d ago )

You link to a 3.5" drive. PS3's use a 2.5" drive!

I got my 320 Gig HD from Newegg (good source) and it's working beautifully.

All you need to know is you need a 2.5" SATA drive. That's it. Pretty simple.

Edit: Oh, and mine is a 7200 RPM and I've had NO problems with it.

Arnon3198d ago (Edited 3198d ago )

"You link to a 3.5" drive. PS3's use a 2.5" drive!"

Durr hurr.

...have you not read anything that we've discussed? The entire premise behind me linking that is to show that if it's not a PC, you're being ripped off in one way or another.

Again, your link proves to us that you are forced to use a 2.5" SATA drive for the PS3, when a PC gamer who spends less money receives twice the hard drive space. I'm actually baffled at how you were not able to distinguish what my latest comment was trying to convey.

Western Digital 2.5" SATA Drive - $74.99 - 320 GB - 7200 RPM
Western Digital 3.5" SATA Drive - $69.99 - 640 GB - 7200 RPM

To even match the PCs Hard Drive space you'll have to spend twice the money:

Western Digital 2.5" SATA Drive - $109.99 - 640 GB - 5400 RPM
Western Digital 2.5" SATA Drive - $225.99 - 1 TB - 5200 RPM

Like I said, the PS3 obviously has the advantage over the 360 when it comes to hard drives, but it's obvious that no matter which console you use, you're still being ripped off in some form or another.

(Lets not even get into the fact that a PC can have multiple Hard Drives)

(and yeah, I love Newegg & Tiger Direct)

I'll put it back in for you. I removed it due to the insomnia I'm suffering, but it seems you want it in there. (I'm also not entirely sure why I should feel bad for you catching me removing a "Durr hurr" from my comment. You seem to be grasping...)

Also, please read the entirety of my comment. Or better yet, read the other comments so you actually know where we are in this discussion. The reason PC was mentioned was because evrfighter brought it up, telling the people here that they were being ripped off.

"Like I said, the PS3 obviously has the advantage over the 360 when it comes to hard drives, but it's obvious that no matter which console you use, you're still being ripped off in some form or another."

Nineball21123198d ago (Edited 3198d ago )

"Durr Hurr" - wow, mature.

The point is that you CAN replace a PS3 HD at a relatively low cost with any 2.5" SATA drive and you DON'T have that choice with the Xbox 360.

Why are you even discussing PC's anyways? This article is about the 360 HD.

Which by the way, even though you still can't get any 250GB HD you want, at least MS might be offering that option.

Nice stealth edit on the "Durr Hurr" too.

badz1493198d ago

I really can't see what your argument is and by trying to justify that PS3 owners are being ripped off with the HDD are somewhat moot! you know why? it's a laptop's HDD the PS3s are using. if you're comparing it with the 3.5" of the PCs, then everybody who bought a laptop is being ripped off! you know, because sony didn't make those HDD! they just use it as it is! this is completely different copared to M$ policy of making propriety HDD and charge a premium for it and PCs have nothing to do with either!

Arnon3198d ago (Edited 3198d ago )

Too tired to go into anymore detail lolz (listening to the Demon's Souls soundtrack doesn't help).

Basically yes... Sony built the PS3 to use a standard 2.5" SATA drive (Sony could have easily went ahead and made support for 3.5" drives). Hurray for custom HDDs. Boo for expensive hardware. Yes laptop users are ripped off. That's the price you pay for having a portable computer.

I... really don't see why everyone is completely ignoring the last piece of information that I keep posting.

"Like I said, the PS3 obviously has the advantage over the 360 when it comes to hard drives, but it's obvious that no matter which console you use, you're still being ripped off in some form or another."

There's really no way around the fact that anything that forces you to use a 2.5" drive is ripping you off. Usually the smaller the product, the less it costs. The smaller the disks that are in the HDD, the less materials are used to manufacture it. The less materials it uses, the more effecient it is, blah blah blah and such.

Does it rip you off compared to the 360? Hell no. Does it rip you off compared to a PC? Pretty much.

(Also, why is it that neither of you are reading the above comments to actually know WHY we are talking about PCs?)

xTruthx3198d ago (Edited 3198d ago )

Arnon you say Sony could of easily supported 3.5 drives ? you do know those HDD are bigger and possibly couldn't fit on a laptop MOBO right ? or on the cell they made specially for the PS3 ? You really know your stuff.

Arnon3198d ago

I was aware that the only thing that connected a 2.5" HDD was a SATA cable. I would assume that the cable in the PS3 is attached to the socket where the hard drive slides into, thus having a HDD snap in place whenever one is inserted?

Is this incorrect for the PS3? (Serious question)

Smart business move on MS's part to not allow any HD other than their own... but it really does shaft their customers.

nygamer283199d ago

does anybody really need a 250GB HDD anyway?

mindedone3199d ago

And I play a few games at a time, besides having music and videos on my xbox, so, yes.

Shang-Long3199d ago

is it easy to install?
n wut happens to all my saved stuff?

Somnipotent3199d ago

takes 5 minutes... if you back up the saves, you can restore them and it was like nothing happened.
