IGN: Army of Two: The 40th Day Review

Lackluster action sequences, brain-dead AI and limited gameplay features really cripple the port of Army of Two: The 40th day on the PSP. While the game does feature morality moments, good dialogue and a variety of environments to fight through, the action is so basic and repetitive that the fun is completely missing. The console version of Army of Two: The 40th Day is well worth exploring, but spare yourself – and your buddies – from the PSP experience.

A poor review in all honesty. Sure, you can make comparisons to the console versions but IGN goes a little too far:

The PSP version is clearly designed as a top-down arcade experience but IGN complain about 'co-op sniping sequences'? really? Yes because proper sniping makes so much sense considering the gameplay camera angle.

This is exactly why I think so many reviewers get it wrong. They forget about the context of a game. So weapon customization is nowhere near as deep as the console versions and basically just power ups the weapons - the game is similar to Contra and Killzone PSP: the point is about being more simple, hence the arcade nature of the title.

Otherwise the rest of the review seems to highlight proper problems with the title.
But really IGN, deducting points from a game because your reviewer clearly does not like the gameplay style is poor reviewing. I'm not saying the PSP version of this game is great but don't hate just because you can.

I like reviews where you have 1 main reviewer and then maybe 2 other people from that website / magazine add their own score and a paragraph containing the main reasons for their score.

Yeah, I'm with you man. I guess most reviewers nowadays, has preconceived notions on what a game should be, and if it strayed from that, then it gets penalized, forgetting that the game was never intended to completely mimic, its console counterpart, but more as an alternative take.

Anyway, I got the game and I like it. I actually felt good about choosing this over the console version. If you love Killzone: Liberation, then you're going to love this.
