Pushing Buttons digs up a 2006 GameSpot April Fools joke predicting the "Revolution" as the market leader by 2010:

"We expect Nintendo's Revolution, based on its price and immense catalog of downloadable games, to be the market leader by 2010," Runte told GameSpot News. "Nintendo is going to be one heck of a competitor for the gaming pie, and from the looks of it, I think they are going to get a rather huge slice."

Sony...they were just too arrogant. Delaying the PS3 and launching at $600 killed the PS3. Even if it wouldnt have games at launch, the delay and the price hurt it the most.

The PS3 did start out quite slow, but it has since redeemed itself immensely. Sony's got the best list of games coming out in 2010 of all the consoles, and you really can't beat MGS4 and Uncharted 2.

sony tested the concept of an all in one multimedia system to see what it could make for next gen.hard drive,movie playback,even the remote looks identical.

since sony knew that they would be on the market for 10 years,and they were successful TWICE,they decided to go for it and include it all.which was $400 dollars cheaper than a bluray player at $1,000 dollars.

Sony sold you a blueray player as a loss leader designed to profit off video games? Or a parallel computer? This explains their finances - if you don't buy games for the system they lose money.

That's why the other companies lost. People just wanted a video game system and nintendo delivered. The initially low prices from excluding features like DVD licensing won them over.

You basically just described a pc. A pc you can't upgrade, program outside hypervisor for with full access to gpu, or even control your own data with locked saves. And if that's what you wanted the ps3 delivered.

It was a great deal for people who wanted a blueray player or pc mediabox. But for people who just wanted a game console it was far overpriced. That was nintendo's insight and why they won.

They don't care what MS, nintendo, or video game players are doing. Which is why they missed the entire market the wii captured. It was arrogance in the fullest sense of the term - buy all this crap to play our games. You may not need blueray but you'll pay because we're sony. Like most people at 300 dollars I could understand this, but 600? I could and did upgrade my pc back then for that price and it runs games in actual 1080p. The last gaming systems that cost this much were 3dO, neogeo, and possibly the jaguar. How did they do with their awesome graphics for the time? (I own a jaguar)

I bought a ps3 for blueray and a couple games. It will be surprising if they make any money off me beyond breaking even with how I purchase them. If they do it'll be off downloaded games since I hardly buy new. Motion control might do it if they put IR pointing in fps.

No it's not. Playing movies on DVD requires purchasing the licensing to decrypt the movie from MPEG2 and this costs money beyond the DVD drive itself. Nintendo saved about 10 dollars by not including it. Which is the price of a dvd player used. IIRC cds have the same licensing issues. The music on them is encoded in a certain format - you pay extra for the license to hear it beyond the costs of the hardware.

There's more to this than tech. Data formats are patented and it takes money to use them. You have to buy a license. This is why you can make your wii play dvds in homebrew. You install the cracked DVD license (a software decryption key) via homebrew. The wii has a DVD *drive* but not the *license* to play DVD movies. It's not free just because you have the hardware. The format itself is patented and nintendo would have to pay for a license to watch movies encoded in it in ADDITION to the hardware costs. And this cost is just shifted down to the purchaser.

There's an option for blueray? Where is it? Sony does own part of blueray IP and I am glad they included it given how it's help modern textures, but that's since I bought a ps3 at 300 dollars. There is no way 600 dollars is worth that when I could get a graphics card for less that does better than 1080p.

You're oversimplifying this. People go to law school for 3 years to begin figuring out how this works.

Like most they said it was a fad. Now they're eating crow. After 3 years you can't deny it and they're making their own motion controls.

Nintendo did not get lucky. Look at that malstrom blog I linked above. There are volumes of quotes showing this was deliberate and based on extensive market research to attract lapsed gamers and expand their market into the casual gaming crowd. It was based off the success and what they learned from the DS.

You're right here. They are different markets - ps3 gamers are different from wii gamers. But sony messed up their game plan. By selling the ps3 as a loss leader to make up for on games they didn't realize people buy them for blueray or (until the slim) to use in parallel computing clusters. That's why they don't sell ones with linux anymore - they never make the loss back on those since number crunchers don't buy games.

The iphone/ipod is another market altogether. It may overlap a bit but the DS is still doing amazingly well.

Don't think I meant the wii market is casual. The main difference is that they want a console only and screw the extra features. They're not willing to pay for them. MS and sony are selling multimedia hubs.

If you consoles bread and butter is as serious as TODAY'S Mario or Zelda you are far from a HC-console. Your target audience is 1-12 yo and their parents/grandparents.

Have you played the original RE or something again now after all the HD next gen games? I have and the games that were great back then are no where near as scary or serious anymore. It doesn't feel the same anymore. Feels kinda childish even. Those were first of their kind and we were kids back then. The elements that made those games good are not fresh anymore.

Those are hardly the reasons why GAMING on the Wii is fun. I have a wife already. We also have 2 children together. I've surely managed to "get it done" even without a Wii. This comment alone makes me doubt wether you even are 25yo.

So you've been out of console gaming for a decade? It makes no difference to me who buys what but you have surely missed out on a LOT of good console games. They aren't all available for PC are they? Are you sure you are not a casual gamer? That's 2 comments in a row that makes me question this.

I'm a little confused in what are you trying to tell me with this... Sure I played the original ps1 GTA. It was kinda cool but GTA 3 really blew the lid off on that series.

I never had a PC until I moved together with my wife. That was some 8 years ago. I've played Diablo 2 mostly on a PC and I thorougly enjoyed it.

I liked Mario and Zelda when I was a kid. I tried the newest Zelda on my wifes DS but surely enough IT IS MADE FOR KIDS. Same old recycled stuff over and over again. It IS fun don't get me wrong but IT COULD NEVER SUBSTITUTE Dead Space (PS3) for instance. My gaming appetite would never be satisfied if I only had a Wii and a DS.

A lot of good console games? They're half pc games. Bungie used to make PC games that rocked so much harder than halo. Halo is updated Marathon. Do you get that? There have been 5 2d mario games in 20+ years. There have been 5 COD games in 2 generations - starting on PC. There have been 5 Resident evils in 3 generations. Recycled ideas are the same FPS being rereleased yearly. Unreal engine...do you know how old that game is? Gears of War 2 is UT2004 in behindview, with chainsaws.

There you have it. You don't want a serious game. Tbh I was scared sh*tless at times when playing Dead Space. Uncharted 2 was a blast too. So was Infamous, Valkyria Cronicles and many others. All those games involve some mature stuff in them. I want to play those games among others. I bought Eyepet for my children and we all sing on Singstar a lot.

The virtual console is a success mainly because of nostalgia. If we (who were the ones who fell in love with these nes-classics when we were a lot younger) buy a Wii for our kids these days then I'll be damned if I won't buy all those great games and taste the nostalgia. The Wii was launched at a perfect time for this. We are adults with kids now.

The PS-platform has a LOT of games that are truly exclusive games. You cannot experience them on anything else but a Playstation.

I played Halo CE and Resistance for their stories. You should try them. They are all unique in their own ways and nothing beats a good story in a good game. Watered down? You mean qualitywize? I believe the PS3 has proven to be quite a beast in giving us high quality games.

No I said the majority of sales come from kids. There are many kinds of owners for the wii but that's the case with every console there is (or ever was). Game sales tell us what the wii owners buy and like in general. Same with the DS. Easy as that.

Yes all games do remind some other game what's the point in this. That's obvious. I got tired of Fighting games after Tekken 3. Only now SF 4 has revived my gaming in that genre. It's kinda hard to think that someone is so harsh with his opinions. "Right now final decision never play this kin of game again". I'm not trying to annoy you I just think you should give things a second chance.

Anyway that's your opinion. I'm not talking about FPSs. What about shadow of colossus for example? Or did you ever get FF7 on your PC? I don't consider even those as games for children.

I haven't played FPSs on PC. I am not HC FPS-player. In MW1 I did kill a lot more than I died (K/D ratio maby 1.2 something iirc)) but that's it. I like all kinds of games. Most of them are rated M I'm affraid. That's just what I like. Games like FEAR and Dead Space. I do have more than enough games for teens and lower too. I buy'em all and I do love them all. The case here is just like I said earlier that my gaming appetite would never be satisfied with only a Wii and a DS.

On the tecnical level many new FPSs are new. KZ2 was the latest line drawer. There's still lot's more room for expansion though until games are totally realistic. Mario and Zelda doesn't even want to become more realistic or more anything. I's been the same old for the last 2 decades soon.

I have Stardust HD. Easy to pick up but boy do go and try to get sayyy.... 100,000,000 points in it. Now if you'll excuse me I have a date with my FF7. I just started a new playthrough on it. I just love that game. I just finished Suikoden and now I want to play FF7. Great stories, great games. Have'em both original too =)

There are just as many nintendo games that don't use it. Metroid, SMG hardly does, NSMB. In punchout and mario kart you can even play old school using the wiimote as a snes controller.

Wii play is bundled with a controller, not a game in itself. Nintendo games aren't all marketed to the same people and wii fit isn't sold to the same people as mario (soon x3), metroid (1 plus trilogy), zelda (soon x2), sin and punishment 2, mario kart, punchout...

Is your argument really that you can't tell the good games from shovelware? Because there are plenty great wii games and this is more of a failing on your part.

True abotu the second point but really Nintendo have taken a turn for the worse this gen IMO. Also about motion control starting to become more popular its becuase both Sony and Microsoft are releasing motion control which is really starting to get on my nerves, I really hate motion control and cannot stand it.

I have a wii, and could take pictures, but I seriously haven't touched it for over 2 months while my PS3 gets usage every single day.

And yeah sorry about my spelling, I should use that spell check button but I always forget. I'm just usually in a hurry when I type and its getting late so thats my excuse.

The ps3 is fun. I just finished punchout so I went back to tekken 6. But I like the wii more. There's older, fun games on it. Much more my style. I can take tekken again since I haven't played it in years and I love LBP. But honestly my wii game collection is much bigger. I have like 50+ wii games, 10 for ps3. I hate aiming on dual analog so that limits what I buy...but stuff like Heavenly Sword and traditional console games rock on it. Also, fighters, MvC2 is fun.

This is more than nintendo. Games cost so much to make that since developers make games for themselves the studios are totally tanking. The industry doesn't listen to customers much anymore. Look at the common complaints about RE5 and tekken 6. I like tekken 6 cause the last one I played was 3. If I had played 5 like everyone else I would be bored to tears of the game.

Hating another poster is a sufficient excuse to flame them - it makes the internet fun! Carry on.

Makes you wonder if Rockstar will ever put out a San Andreas Stories for Wii or something. The audience may not be there for a ground-up effort, but the audience is certainly there for a game from them.

Developers make games for themselves, not customers. So it basically depends on their hatred for nintendo.

For example, UT engine not running on the wii but being released for the iphone is the most hilarious bullsh!t I've read in years. The iphone has 24mb of vram and the wii 88mb. The iphone has 128mb ram (usually down to like 65mb with 3G stuff running) and the wii has 512mb. I sometimes wonder how much MS paid them for that. And how it exposes most tech writers as totally technically incompetent when they say the iphone is more powerful.

The best thing about malstrom is his hatred for the video game industry. I hate their stupid decisions like this more than I can imagine. Particularly when people trust them enough to moronically argue the iphone is more powerful than the wii. I honestly hope it gets shaken up worse as this gen progresses.

evil - Right now I like MP1 far better than 2. 2 is good but the world in 1 appealed to me so much more. Tundras, lava caverns, forests...dark and light world aren't doing it for me nearly as much. I still love MP2, but MP1 was incredible. Also (so far) the music is much better in MP1.

Prime 1 is marvelous. I developed an appreciation for Prime 2 based (at least in part) on its difficulty. And I know I'm in the minority, but I like the dark world in Echoes, despite all of the purple.

But I went back and played the original the night before last and started a new game. There is nothing that compares to landing on the Tallon IV overworld and walking through the Chozo ruins for the first time.

That game was made in 2002, and somehow, it still stands up visually to this day. I'm no tech head, but I think the folks down at Retro must be alchemists.

Sure they sold a lot of consoles but its mostly to kids who wanted to play wii sports and junk. The PS2 sold hundreds of millions and was equally successful in software sales. Even if the Wii outsold the PS2 in console numbers, their software sales are abysmal.

Actually their software sales are fine. Higher attach rate than the PS3. I can only assume you think that because rather than look at the information for yourself you just read the random blogs from Wii haters and assume that an on rails game failing as it should means every other game sells poorly.
Software sales are more than just the top 10, which Nintendo dominates any way, but you cant really look at the FACTS and make the kinda claims you are.

You do understand... Wait waste of time asking that... What exactly do you think the Sixaxis was? Sonys attempt to jump on the bandwagon early when they saw the response to the Wii remote.

I am sure you are right though. A company that dominates for 2 gens isnt at all worried about going straight to last place. I mean it's not like they are out to make money or anything. It's all just for charity.
