Is the Xbox 360 Really Future-Proof?

From the PlanetXbox360.com feature editorial:

"As the Xbox 360 gets further along into its lifespan as a gaming console, many in the gaming industry and community at large begin to question when exactly a replacement will be on the horizon. However, in the years since it was released, Microsoft has notably proven that the console is capable of evolving, being adapted to the needs and wants of gamers as well as developers. For instance, Project Natal will allow the Xbox 360 to compete in the realm of motion controlled titles. This, on top of already consistently strong content offered by Microsoft, continues to perpetuate gamers to purchase 360 titles as well as utilize the hell out of everything Xbox Live has to offer. But, as the 360 continues to be produced, it receives strong utilization as a gaming platform and media center, if for no other reason than people keep buying them in staggering numbers. Thus, it draws on the question of whether or not the system is actually future-proof until such time as Microsoft, in their infinite corporate wisdom, decides to replace the console with a significant technological jump."

I think the Xbox 360 (and PS3/Wii for that matter) are 100% future-proof and will last much longer than previous consoles; MS recently said that at CES it was nowhere near another console announcement - I see many more dashboard updates and hardware updates but not a new console....

kneon3599d ago

While I don't think any new consoles are imminent, Microsoft, Nintendo or Sony saying they have no plans for a new console soon is worthless. They are unlikely to talk about the new console until shortly before it's released. Otherwise sales of the existing console will crash. The only reason to talk about a new console before that is if your competitor has announced or launched their new console, then you may want to talk up your new console to prevent people jumping ship.

Megaton3599d ago (Edited 3599d ago )

The only real problem for the whole "future proof 360" notion is that it uses DVD. A handful of devs have already been pretty vocal on this issue, Rockstar probably being the most notable among them. Aside from that, I don't see any particular reason why the 360 couldn't last another few years. Graphically, I think we're at a pretty comfortable spot for now.

Immortal3213599d ago

I think I know where MS is going.

Maddens Raiders3599d ago (Edited 3599d ago )

let's ask Mr. HD-DVD add on. Hey, are you still there little buddy...? [crickets]

Oh well now there has to be someone that can answer this question: maybe we can ask:

Mr. Built in Wi-Fi?
Mr. Built in bluetooth?
Ms. freeee Internet browser?
and last but not least,
Ms. interchangeable & non-proprietary HDD?

Aquarius3599d ago (Edited 3599d ago )

Microshaft: "It is a myth that you need HDMI to output HD video and audio"

2years later...they decide to include it with 360s but what for?
DVDs were never manufactured to output HD video nor audio.

PS3 had HDMI 1.3 from launch and is only an update away for 3-D gaming.

So no its not future-proof ;)

@ above the 360 doesn't have built in BT........
but wait!!!!!
It has infrared (IR) though ;)

presto7173599d ago (Edited 3599d ago )

MS tries to reach with old stuff. I mean think about it: dvd 9, AA batteries. wouldn't be surprised if the next one came with a kick starter.

We all know the xbox is all about the here and the now.
LMAO at Madden Raiders' comment.

minus the 'do.

At any rate, future proof?

let's see how far they're talking about first.

AAACE53599d ago (Edited 3599d ago )

For anyone to say something is future proof is pure ignorance! If things were future proof, there would be no need to release anything after it.

Everything gets outdated!

Alot of people went out and bought HDTV's when they first came out thinking it would be the best for a while. But then the 120 Hz came out, then the 240 Hz came out and soon the 3D TV's will be out... Still think that first one can keep up with the newer ones and show the vivid details? I think not!

For those fanboys out there, if the Ps3 is future proof, why are Sony working on a new disc format that can store 6 Tb's if the regular Bluray disc has just come out not that long ago?

NOTHING IS FUTURE PROOF!!!

sikbeta3599d ago (Edited 3599d ago )

Guys, talk about this don't make any sense

Just look at what The PS3 offer and then compare it to the x360, the answer is pretty obvious, PS3 is future proof, well more than the competition and offer much more features

But you think the MS Fan-Crew care about that, come on, they were praising the "facebook integration" on x360, whereas PS3 owners have a BROWSER and by that they have complete access to the interwebz, they praise "natal" now, but before "natal" they hated wii-motion-control with passion

What I want to say, is that even if you show them the plethora of features a NøN-MS console can offer (like wii and motion-control), they just bring XGC and friend invitez or Gears or Halo or ME2 and if you talk about Blu-Ray they bring DVD9 and say HD-DVD was better, so the whole debate is just a waste of time, let them see what they only want to see

Peace øut

Saaking3599d ago

The 360 hasn't advanced since Gears 2 (and even that was only slightly better than Gears 1) so no. While the PS3 seems to be outdoing itself every other month, the 360 is STILL stuck in 2008. Sad, but true. MS really screwed up by rushing to beat Sony (which they will still fail to do when all is said and done).

this writer do know that motion control is not a new thing and the one they are trying to compete, the Wii is using last gen tech and not capable of HD, right?

SteinigerGE3599d ago (Edited 3599d ago )

The author of this article lives in a fantasy world where DVDs are still cutting edge and Microsoft doesn't make you pay extra for things the competion throws in already:

1. "you can easily bear in mind that the system plays DVDs too. Not that it’s easy to forget or anything like that,..."

Yes, it is. Who still watches DVDs? You either stream a film or watch it on Blu-Ray!

2. "but remember when the original Xbox premiered and the only way to use it as a DVD player was by purchasing a special add-on for the console? If there is one thing I’m glad Microsoft didn’t carry over in their mentality towards the 360, trust me, it’s that."

Well they didn't carry over the external DVD player (since they had to put their larger games on something) but they did try and go high def by pimping a separate HD DVD drive. How's that gamble worked out for you Microsoft?

Where are the peope that consider either of these sound arguments? I have some very cheap ocean front property in Arizona to sell you.

AKNAA3599d ago (Edited 3599d ago )

"but when your girlfriend is going to actually want to sit back, you can easily bear in mind that the system plays DVDs too. "

BAHAHAHAH!!! omg man, that was the funniest sh1t I heard all day! Hmmm, what can I say but... The 360 has definitely Topped the gamecube in this department! future proof indeed. well, 10 years ago anyway....
oh hell, my little alarm clock plays dvd's!!! can they at least try not to embarrass themselves when defending the 360 at least?!

insomnium3598d ago

that MS is putting all their eggs in the basket of Natal? If it fails there will be a totally different tone in their voice. Suddenly it's time to move on to another console. JUST WATCH.

I hate MS's gaming department all the way from the fugly fugly Greentard to the fanboys.

Don't they realize MS wasn't interested in motion tech until they saw how popular Wii became? Are they really that blind? MS does nothing but buys themselves into well established millionsellers. MGS, FF and GTA-franchises all of which the PS-family made popular. Now the Wii too? I would be too embarrassed to support this kind of behaviour.

Maddens Raiders3598d ago

the Natal geniuses to tell me how natal will be utilised with FPS's...?

Walk me through how this is done please.

Narutone663598d ago

fingers like a gun at the camera like any 8 or 9 nine year old used to do and with your mouth shout pew, pew, pew.

Also remember, Sony had been trying to do motion control ever since the PS2 with Eyetoy.

Heck, Sony wanted to release a motion controller for the Eyetoy but developers thought people liked camera based games more... until the Wii came out.

No console is inherently future proof or not future proof. It is a stupid concept.

Different console offer different things and it is up to the consumer to decide if those things meet their needs.

That said the 360 is a very powerful console, with strong software support and an outstanding online service. If Microsoft continues to support it, which they have stated that they will, there is no reason it cannot last for many more years.

Even the Wii, which has graphics no better than consoles of last generation, is here competing and doing very well in the current generation.

Given the current state of affairs with the Wii and the PS2, to even question whether the 360, which is a much more advanced console, is future proof enough is really kind of stupid.

The 360 is just as powerful as the PS3 and the fact that it doesn't have a Blu-ray drive is of little consequence. 95% of games this generation fit on a DVD just fine. The few that don't can simply be put on multiple discs, which isn't a big deal whatsoever.

Another reason this talk of being future proof is stupid is that last generation the Xbox was much more technologically advanced than the PS2 in terms of graphics, built in broadband ethernet port, built-in hard drive, etc. The PS2 was less advanced in every single way, yet it sold better than the Xbox.

Like I said, the whole discussion is just stupid.

not nearly as futureproof as the ps3 which has far far superior hardware

badz1493599d ago

but if a system can hold up for itself long enough and doesn't give me the sense of being outdated, I think I'm ok with it! it's true that PS3 and 360 are way inferior in terms of spec compared to high end PCs nowadays but aside from crysis, no other game on PC crushes the best games on consoles just yet IMO! and to be honest, KZ2, Uncharted2, MGS4 looks way better than most PC games. and exclusives on consoles makes it even higher in terms of value for gamers! I mean, sure you can't get 1920x1200 games on consoles and even 1080p games are rare, but you can't play these awesome exclusives without the supposedly 'inferior' consoles!

mrv3213599d ago

HDMi 1.2, No built in hard drive, An add-on which'll remove 10-15% of the systems power, needless to mention the DVD 9. So yeah, not really future proof, still a good system but allready now it's pretty outdated by even low spec laptops.

meepmoopmeep3599d ago (Edited 3599d ago )

don't be silly, those features are the future!

:)

All hail "Microsoft, in their infinite corporate wisdom"

#truth

SaberEdge3598d ago

You guys are silly. All consoles are old technology compared to what is available on PCs. That doesn't mean they don't serve us well as consoles. Besides, your point is stupid. The 360 is just as powerful as the PS3 and if the 360 is outdated then so is the PS3.

Godmars2903599d ago

If people want to pay for add-ons. The 360 was pretty much proven non-future proof via the negative effects its DVD9 had on the PC and PS3 versions of Borderlands.

saint_john_paul_ii3599d ago

The SEGA Genesis was future proof....Through Add-ons, ROFL...

Solidus187-SCMilk3599d ago (Edited 3599d ago )

you might be talking about rage, but if your talking about borderlands your wrong. I know that because I installed it on my 360 and it was ONLY 3.2 GB. Thats only half of a dvd even.
